2db9af4d8e68x586 murrayAndy Murray comfortably progressed to the fourth round of the French Open on Friday, despite giving up a set to love against Marcos Baghdatis.

The British number one made a sluggish start but quickly recovered to cruise through the first two sets and seemed to be heading towards a routine straight-sets victory.

But his Cypriot opponent broke early in the third set before Murray dropped his serve twice more to let Baghdatis back into the match.

The number four seed regained his form during the fourth set and looked convincing when rounding out a 6-2 6-3 0-6 6-2 victory.

After finishing late twice in his two-day second-round contest with Juan Ignacio Chela, Murray was back on court before 3.30pm local time on Friday.

And the Scot seemed to be feeling the strain of his disrupted schedule as he had to deal with a break point and several deuces in his opening two service games.

Murray held both and was gifted a break when Baghdatis produced a pair of bad errors in the fifth game.

The 25th seed struggled to settle on his serve and two further mistakes in game seven handed Murray another break and effectively decided the first set.

Baghdatis’ serve did not improve at the start of the second set as Murray broke him at the fifth time of asking in a marathon first game.

But the 23-year-old failed to take advantage and handed the break back to his opponent in the next game.

The 2006 Australian Open finalist always looked vulnerable, however, and after a narrow escape in his previous service game, was broken with a fine forehand winner in game five.
Collapse

This time Murray consolidated the break before another collapse from Baghdatis put him two sets to the good.

The world number four was then expected to race towards victory but immediately fell 0-40 down before netting to give up an early break in the third set.

Baghdatis then held despite facing a break point and easily secured two more breaks as Murray seemed to give up on the set.

The concerns grew at the start of set four as Murray double-faulted to lose his seventh game in a row, with four of those on his own serve.

But his opponent had not overcome his own struggles and allowed Murray to break back immediately.

A rare string of holds then followed before Murray gained the decisive break after a wonderful crosscourt backhand in game six before breaking again in the final game to seal victory.

A hung Parliament has left Britain at a huge disadvantage in negotiating the final wording of a controversial EU directive that will clamp down on hedge funds and private equity.

Lisa Cawley, regulatory partner of law firm Kirkland & Ellis, said: “There is a real concern that the UK election result leaves a major part of our financial services industry without a voice at a critical point in the EU legislative process.”

The Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers, which is to be agreed today in Brussels, marks a determined effort by European regulators to crack down on alternative investment companies in the wake of the financial crisis.

The European Parliament is expected to approve strict new rules forcing alternative investment managers to disclose far more about their investment strategies and the way they pay staff.
The currency climbed for a second day after last week completing its biggest drop against the dollar since the collapse of global credit markets in October 2008. European officials declined to disclose the size of the stabilization fund, to be made up of money borrowed by the EU’s central authorities. The mechanism may be worth 500 billion euros, said a government official familiar with the talks in Brussels.

“Markets’ assessment of the effectiveness of the package will be critical to the fortunes of the euro, equity markets and risk appetite early in the week,” Mike Jones, a currency strategist at Bank of New Zealand Ltd. in Wellington, wrote in a note to clients.
