BEIJING: An armless pianist who plays with his toes has won the first series of China’s version of the internationally popular television talent show, “China’s Got Talent.”

Liu Wei, 23, who lost both his arms aged 10 when he was electrocuted during a game of hide-and-seek, defeated 7-year-old standup comedian Zhang Fengxi at the final on Sunday at the Shanghai Stadium, the Shanghai Daily reported.

The pianist, from Beijing, who taught himself to play the piano at age 18, impressed the audience with his performance of “You’re Beautiful,” singing and using his feet to play the piano.

He also reported won over the judges by commenting: “At least I have a pair of perfect legs.”

Cai Xiuqing, 23, a college student from Shantou in Guangdong province, won third place for singing “Boundless Oceans Vast Skies,” a hit for Hong Kong rock back Beyond.

“They have all agreed to leave Israel, and they are in the airport now,” Israeli Population and Migration Authority spokeswoman Sabin Hadad told Xinhua.

Israeli navy soldiers on Saturday took command of the Gaza- bound ship after its crews rejected orders to change course to dock at an Israeli port. After the bloodless takeover, Israeli warships led the vessel to southern Israel’s Ashdod Harbor, where 19 passengers aboard were detained by Israeli authorities.

The Rachel Corrie, named after a peace activist killed in Gaza in 2003, intended to deliver over 1,000 tons of medical and construction supplies to the besieged Gaza strip.

The latest tension between Israeli navy and pro-Palestinian activists came five days after at least nine people were killed and dozens of others were injured in a raid by the Israeli military on a Gaza-bound international aid flotilla with more than 600 people on board.77d460dcc287 11n corrie

The Rachel Corrie was originally part of the flotilla, but it was delayed for sailing to Gaza reportedly due to mechanical problems. The Irish ship – named for an American college student crushed to death by a bulldozer in 2003 while protesting against Israeli house demolitions in Gaza – was carrying hundreds of tonnes of aid, including wheelchairs, medical supplies and cement. It is unclear if some or all the supplies will be trucked by Israel to Gaza.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said: “I am glad that the interception of the Rachel Corrie has been resolved peacefully.”

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been held across Britain and Ireland.

The stand-off has raised international pressure on Israel to lift the three-year-old blockade that has left the territory’s 1.5 million residents facing deep poverty.89f7d53c6651266c corrie

Pakistani student convicted of conspiring to aid Taliban

HOUSTON: A Pakistani college student living in Texas was convicted Thursday of conspiring to help the Taliban and fight U.S. troops.

A federal jury convicted Adnan Babar Mirza, 33, of two conspiracy counts and seven firearms violations after a three-day trial in Houston.

He faces up to five years in prison on each conspiracy count and 10 years on the weapons counts when he is sentenced on Sept. 10.

Mirza, who remains in federal custody, was one of four men arrested in 2006 for alleged participation in paramilitary training exercises at campsites around the Houston area so they could engage in a holy war.

Mirza”s attorney, David Adler, told jurors Mirza went on camping trips but denied they involved paramilitary training exercises.

Prosecutor Jim McAlister told jurors that the activities of Mirza and the other three men came to authorities” attention after another of their friends, James Coates, decided “things were getting out of hand” and became an FBI informant.

Mirza claimed Coates was the one who was militant and promoted violence.

An undercover officer taped conversations with Mirza and the other men in which they allegedly talked about ambushing U.S. soldiers and triggering a bomb with a cell phone, according to court documents.

FBI Special Agent John McKinley, the prosecution”s first witness, told jurors Mirza can be heard on the taped conversations talking about sending money to support Taliban families.

Prosecutors have said Mirza collected about $900 for Taliban fighters and their families.

But Adler said it”s not against the law to send money to the families of Taliban fighters and Mirza collected money for hospitals and other groups but not specifically for the Taliban.

He also said Mirza can be heard in these taped conversations expressing anger about injustices Muslims around the world have experienced, but his client was just expressing emotion and didn”t intend to act on it.
