Accident kills woman in Karachi

KARACHI: Three overspeeding buses ran into each other in Karachi, leaving one female passenger dead and injuring four others.

The accident took place near Mehran Hotel on Shara-e-Faisal late Friday night.

A nearby jeep was also damaged in the collision.

Farzana, 30, died on the spot while four other passengers identified as Mushtaq, Shamini, Akram and an unidentified man, suffered serious injuries. They were immediately shifted to Jinnah Hospital.

Meanwhile, police also reached the scene and arrested all three drivers. Trend Pk

India battles oil spill after ships collide off Mumbai

MUMBAI: Indian coastguards on Monday battled choppy seas, monsoon rain and strong winds to contain oil from a badly listing container ship that collided with another vessel off the city of Mumbai.

The Panamanian-registered MSC Chitra has been leaking fuel into the sea off India”s financial capital since the collision on Saturday, raising environmental fears about its impact on the coastline.

The ship was lying at a sharp 60-degree angle to its port side about five nautical miles off shore, with containers and other cargo falling into the murky water.

Oil had spread around the ship and was drifting towards the shore.

Defence ministry spokesman Captain M. Nambiar told AFP that the vessel”s position was “precarious”, adding: “It”s difficult to get on board to locate the point of leakage.”

Broken patches of oil have already been cleared around Elephanta Island, a World Heritage Site and tourist attraction in Mumbai Harbour, the defence ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

But environmental emergency teams put on alert since the collision said on Monday that oil had been discovered on beaches on the mainland across the Arabian Sea from the landmark Gateway of India monument.

Deepak Apte, a senior scientist at the Bombay Natural History Society, said some oil patches were up to 15 centimetres (six inches) in length.

“We are taking samples for analysis,” he was quoted as saying by the domestic Press Trust of India news agency. “This may be only a beginning of finding the on-shore oil spill.”

Locals, however, said that tar balls from oil rigs and refineries located in the stretch of water approaching Mumbai”s port were often found on beaches during the annual monsoon rains.

Six coastguard ships were working to minimise the impact of the spill from the MSC Chitra, while a coastguard helicopter dropped oil-dispersal spray on the slick.

Hundreds of containers have fallen from the ship and are being collected.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for a report from the shipping ministry into the spill, while environment minister Jairam Ramesh told parliament that legal action had been launched against the owners of the two cargo ships.

The announcements came as opposition lawmakers in parliament demanded that any fishermen suffering loss of income from the oil spill be compensated.

The MSC Chitra was leaving Mumbai when it was in a collision with the MV Khalijia-III, another Panamanian-registered ship, which was manoeuvring into port.

Both ships developed cracks following the collision and 33 crew members were rescued. But police said one of its officers drowned after he fell off a four-man speedboat patrolling the area around the stricken ship.

“The other three constables also could not rescue him as none of them, including the victim, knew swimming,” a police spokesman said.

BRUSSELS : At least 25 Dead in Belgian Train Collision, Two commuter trains collided head-on at rush hour in a Brussels suburb Monday, killing as many as 25 people, Belgian rail officials said. Other officials said the death toll was lower.

Belgian National Railways told the VRT radio network that 25 people had died. The suburb’s mayor said the death toll was 20. Lodewijk De Witte, governor of the province of Flemish Brabant, told VRT that 10 people were killed.

The trains collided in light snow just outside of the station at Buizingen around 8:30 a.m. (0730GMT).

Television reports showed that the force of the collision pushed the first car of each train up off the tracks. The cars ended up resting against each other. Photos from the scene showed another car that appeared to have tipped onto its side. Rescuers rushed victims on stretchers along the tracks.

“The most recent information we have is that 20 people died,” town Mayor Dirk Pieters told. “I base this on what the police and firefighters tell me.”

There was no immediate word on the number of injured.

Pieters said the seriously hurt were taken to hospitals and the lightly injured were moved to a Buizingen sports complex.

The crash caused massive damage to overhead power lines. Eurostar reported on its Web site that its high-speed trains had suspended service in and out of Brussels and could remain shut down all day.

The international high-speed network Thalys, which links major cities in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands, temporarily halted all traffic because its trains use the same rails as commuter lines near Hal, said Patricia Baars, a company spokeswoman.

At least four Thalys trains were stopped en route, and the railway operator deployed staffers to stations where they were rerouted to provide assistance to travelers on board, she said.

“No (Thalys) train is moving for the moment … it’s very hard to know today when services will resume,” she said. “It appears this was a very severe accident.”

Thalys has at least 25 round-trip trains operating between Paris and Brussels each day, plus seven linking Brussels and Amsterdam and six from Belgium to Cologne, Germany.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash.

It was the most serious Belgian train crash since March 28, 2001, when eight people died when a crowded train plowed into an empty train driving on the wrong tracks.

Coast Guard Plane Crash

Breaking news about Coast Guard Plane Crash, US coastguard Hercules plane and a Marine Corps helicopter collided each other off the coast of southern California.

A crew of seven was aboard the airplane and two were aboard the helicopter when the aircraft collided Thursday night 50 miles west of the San Diego County coast and 15 miles east of San Clemente Island, a Navy training site.

Aircraft and ships are scouring the ocean off San Diego for any signs of survivors of a nighttime collision of a Coast Guard C-130 airplane and a Marine Corps attack helicopter.

The officials said,

“A search was on Thursday night for nine people left missing after a Coast Guard plane collided with a Marine helicopter over the Pacific Ocean near Southern California,”

According to reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), at the time of the collision, a nearby pilot had reported seeing a fireball.

Helicopter Crash Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan:- Four American troops were killed and two injured when two helicopters collided in southern Afghanistan on Monday.

Hostile fire has been ruled out in the crash, a military statement said. US military spokesman Col. Wayne Shanks said he did not have other details yet about the cause of the collision. Shanks said the injured had been evacuated to hospitals inside Afghanistan. In another incident, another helicopter went down on Monday during an operation by international forces against insurgents in western Afghanistan in which a dozen militants were killed. So far 424 foreign troops have been killed in Afghanistan this year.

Brother Speed motorcycle club

Brother Speed motorcycle club, Two dozen Brother Speed Motorcyle Club members were involved in an accident on I5 according to the Oregon Police. The interstate was closed for hours because of this.

According to eye witnesses, the bikers were behind the cars and because of the traffic the cars and bikes tried to slow down. But instead the bikers collided with the cars and from then on the Domino effect took hold. Because of the collision many bikes were scattered on the pavement.

Two bikers were in critical condition because of this incident and had to be flown to hospitals in Portland by helicopter.

Finally the interstate could be reopened at 6 PM in the evening following the chaos.

Two Train Collided Near Kotri Six Bogies Derailed

KOTRI: Up and down railway traffic on main national track came to a halt following a collision between two freight trains near Kotri here Thursday, reports ARY NEWS.

According to the channel, a Hyderabad-bound freight train loaded with oil drums rammed into a stopped goods train at main railway track near Kotri.

At least six bogies of first train were derailed and overturned following the collision, resulting seepage of oil at the accident site, the channel said.

Railway authorities have declared emergency after the accident in which two people were also wounded, according to reports.

Rangers have reached the scene and cordoned off the area to avoid any untoward situation as the leakage of oil might catch fire, railway officials said.

Up and down railway traffic on the main track has been suspended following the accident.

Railway Department’s emergency relief train has left for the accident site, while the railway officials have claimed to restore the traffic on the track in the next six hours.
