"Patiala House is not a comedy & I didn’t want to pitch it as one" – Nikhil Advani

Nikhil Advani had a major dispute with the rest of his team over the content of the first trailer of Patiala House. The dispute caused a critical delay in getting the trailer ready to be attached to Tees Maar Khan (TMK), as per plan. Consequently, the trailer couldn’t make it to all the theatres in Mumbai.
When Nikhil Advani visited a suburban theatre to watch TMK on Friday, it wasn’t only because he wanted to check out his own film’s hero’s latest offering. Nikhil wanted to see the first trailer of his own film Patiala House that was attached to TMK.
To his shock the trailer of Patiala House was missing from the film since it couldn’t be attached in time to all the prints of TMK.
Laughs Nikhil joylessly, “All the prints of the trailers for the Dolby theatres couldn’t be ready in time. So only about 70 percent of the Dolby theatres could show the trailer of Patiala House with Tees Maar Khan. Unfortunately, I landed up in one of the theatres that didn’t have my trailer attached to the film. Can you imagine? The world saw it. I couldn’t.”
Was it a last-minute decision to peg the Patiala House trailer to TMK?
Explains Nikhil, “No no. We had decided long ago to attach our first trailer to Tees Maar Khan. Akshay is a co-producer on both projects. Since Patiala is not a comedy we decided we’d wait for the release of TMK before starting the campaign.”
Then Nikhil blurts out, “All the Dolby prints of the trailer couldn’t be ready because there was some problem over what to put in the trailer.”
Says Nikhil, “All I’ll say is, there was some dispute over the content. Patiala House is not a comedy and I didn’t want to pitch it as a comedy. My biggest compliment was when Rishi Kapoor (who plays Akshay’s father) called up to say, ‘You’ve hit a sixer with your first trailer.’”
Akshay Kumar admits Patiala House takes him into another mood away from the comic. “There is only some black humour in Patiala House. Otherwise it’s a very dramatic story of a Sikh father who thinks it’s unpatriotic of his British-Indian son to play cricket for the British team against India. Yes, there were creative differences over what the first trailer should look like. I am not just the actor on the project. I am the producer as well.”
In brief, Akshay will have his say on what goes into the trailer.

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood A-listers Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences, a week after they announced their amicable split, documents showed.

The legal documents, filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court, gave the date of separation as December 14 — the day they announced their split last week — and ticked the box citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason.

The couple did not sign a pre-nuptial agreement before their September 2008 wedding, TMZ reported, citing sources as saying that Ryan made more money than the US actress during their marriage.

Property rights have yet to be determined, according to the court papers.

Johansson, 26, famous for roles in films such as “Lost in Translation” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” had said in press reports that being apart from Canadian star Reynolds due to filming schedules was hard on a relationship.

“We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated,” the couple said in a statement announcing their separation last week.

People magazine cited an unnamed source as saying the couple quietly split six months ago, adding that Johansson – named Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire magazine in 2006 — initiated the move.

The actress had already begun apartment-hunting in her native New York City, it added.

In case he”s crushed, he shouldn’t have too hard a time finding a date: Reynolds, 34, was named People”s “Sexiest Man Alive” two weeks before they announced their split.

Known for films such as “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” the Canadian actor is starring in an upcoming silver screen version of the comic classic “Green Lantern.”

Before his relationship with Johansson, Reynolds was engaged to Canadian singer Alanis Morissette.

1318eca1ready1 Salman Khan starrer Ready all set to release on 27th May 2011

Bhushan Kumar’s Ready that promises action and comedy like never before is set to release on 27th May 2011.

The film, which is currently being shot in Mumbai from the house of T-Series, stars Salman Khan and Asin in the lead roles and is already creating a stir in industry circles much before its release.

After breaking all box office records with his last film Dabangg, Salman Khan is back at his comic best in Ready directed by Anees Bazmee of Singh Is Kingg and Welcome fame.

Says Bhushan Kumar, “The schedule of Ready is moving smoothly and it’s been great fun working with Salman. We share a great friendship not to mention a fantastic working equation. It’s overwhelming to see his commitment towards the movie. He is a thorough professional and is always there with interesting inputs wherever need be… As far as Salman is concerned, he is like family.”

The man with the Midas touch says that his film has just the right ingredients that will have audiences asking for more.

“I was always looking for a script which has everything and I found that in Ready. The film has lots of humour, there are 2-3 action sequences which Salman fans will love, there are a lot of dramatic sequences, and we also have good scope for music. In short it’s a total masala entertainer with proper story and screenplay,” adds Bhushan Kumar.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali stranded on Jaipur airport

A holy visit on Tuesday to Jaipur turned out to be a rather comic nightmare for Sanjay Leela Bhansali (SLB).

On Wednesday when he was waiting to board his flight back to Mumbai, calamity struck. Freak rains created a situation so unique in travel history that SLB found himself in the midst of making history over and above his cinema.

Says the director, a nervous flier by nature, “Though it was raining heavily the Mumbai-Jaipur flight landed on time and we got ready to board the flight. But after the landing no passenger came out of the aircraft! The minutes ticked into hours. Still no sign of anyone emerging from the aircraft. We were told nothing. We just sat waiting for movement from the aircraft wondering if it was being held hostage.”

Several hours after the scheduled departure time, and with SLB getting progressively nervous about losing precious time, it came to light that the passengers who had landed in Jaipur from Mumbai refused to deboard because it was raining and there was bus to carry them to the terminal.

The incoming passengers finally de-boarded two hours after arrival. But then began the second-half of the drama. The passengers waiting to board refused to do so.

Recalling the harrowing incident SLB says, “The passengers then started saying they won’t board in protest for the delay. One passenger even took out a video camera to record this freak delay for posterity. I was hiding in a corner. If I got captured on camera and the news channels got a hand on it, I’d become more famous then I wanted to be.”

The ground crew finally convinced the outgoing passengers from Jaipur to Mumbai to board while a very tense and nervous filmmaker tried to forget that he had a release coming up in less than 36 hours.

The look and feel of the film will be very much like the Archie comics. The film will have the same colours etc. The first schedule of the film will start in Mumbai from September 21. The film is being produced by KE Entertainment and written by Manu Rishi of Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye and Aisha fame.

"I have not yet signed the YRF film" – Ali Zafar

Pakistani pop star Ali Zafar, currently busy putting together charity rock concerts for flood victims in Pakistan, is taken aback to hear he is doing a Yash Raj Film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar.

Says Ali, “The announcement, if it came from the production house, is premature. I have not signed the film you mentioned. I have not signed any film after Tere Bin Laden. I have not even met the producer Aditya Chopra or the director Ali Abbas Zafar. Yes, we’ve spoken about the film. And I’ve liked my role. We’ll meet when I come to Mumbai this week.”

Ali surprises you even more by admitting that he has heard the script on the internet. “The director narrated the script to me on Skype! All our communication so far has been virtual. I like the sound of the role. It is in the comic space. I guess they thought of me for the part because of my comic timing in Tere Bin Laden.”

Is the pop star aware that the role was apparently offered to Riteish Deshmukh who generally plays supporting roles? Ali says he isn’t aware of the role’s past. But he is determined not to play supporting roles. “Aditya Chopra spoke to me for a long time, convinced me that it’s a role equal to Imran Khan’s. I am very clear on this issue and I told Aditya that I won’t play any secondary or supporting roles. He has assured me it’s a parallel role (to Imran Khan).”

However, Ali Zafar will take a call only when he meets the producer and director in Mumbai.

He also knows that a leading lady is yet to be finalized for him. That should be a dead giveaway on how “parallel” Ali’s role is to Imran’s.

Says the pop icon, “I’ve yet to decide on which films to do in Mumbai. But yes, I’m coming to Mumbai next week, although I am neck-deep at the moment organizing relief concerts here in Pakistan after the floods which are said to be the worst catastrophe ever.”

Ali has invited international pop stars Bono and Sting to join him on stage for a charity concert in Lahore. “But since I plan to have all these concerts only after Eid (this being the period of abstinence the Ramzan), I can take a break to come to Mumbai.” Relocation to Mumbai is a serious possibility. For the moment, Ali Zafar has applied for a special visa. “So I can move in and out of Pakistan and India freely. At the moment I am getting only multiple visas… Here, in Lahore, I am asked if I’ve encountered any hostility in India. But I’ve received only love everywhere in Mumbai,” he ends.

045eb55b45impson hayden simpsonChicago Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken took an unheralded kid out of Clemson in his first draft with the Cubs in 2006. The young outfielder had played pretty well for the Tigers, but no one saw him being drafted earlier than the late second or third round. The pick was roundly criticized.

Today, he’s playing in the outfield for the Cubs – his name is Tyler Colvin.

So you’ll allow me to give Wilken the benefit of the doubt when he selected D-2 right-hander Hayden Simpson out of Southern Arkansas 16th overall in tonight’s draft. Simpson was ranked the 191st pitcher – pitcher, not player – by Baseball America going into the draft, making him a projected 6th or 7th round type player. Clearly, the Cubs felt he wasn’t going to last nearly that far (the Cubs don’t pick again until number 65), so they pulled the trigger.5072ba98dfjones hayden simpson

The kid was so unknown that MLB Network had to scramble to put together a name plate to get him up on the big board.

Something to bear in mind – when the Cubs took Colvin in 2006, many saw it as a way to save some money in the first round to be used in later rounds on guys who weren’t expected to sign unless they got big cash (Jeff Samardzija being the notable example). This could mean the Cubs plan on spending some big money in later rounds, which could make the draft as a whole very exciting.

Plowing through some of tonight’s new fare, and a look ahead at one show later this week, after the jump. …

I generally like “Lie to Me,” and next week’s episode is OK, but tonight’s is overall somewhat disappointing. It matches Lightman against a brilliant young villain (“Veronica Mars’ ” Jason Dohring); the resulting cat-and-mouse game is ably handled by the actors but not much in terms of script. I expect better from the show.

I did not like the sneak-previewed episode of “The Good Guys,” and the ratings were bad enough to start speculation that this series might not make it to Fox’s fall lineup, even though it is slotted in. Tonight’s episode is an improvement over the earlier one. Bradley Whitford is much funnier (although he has to get past the constant references to “computer machine”) and the somewhat convoluted plot allows for more amusement. I am not yet a fan, and there are still overdone elements such as the time shifting, but this was just entertaining enough that I might check in again.

My problem with “Last Comic Standing” is the same as it has been for some time: The comics just aren’t that funny as a whole. Part of this is a function of presentation, which has them auditioning with a couple of jokes, and in some cases getting a chance to do a longer performance for a club audience. As the comments make clear in tonight’s show, a lot of the comics hold back their best material from the audition, saving it for the club show, and that makes for a lot of weak auditions. I’m a big fan of Last Comic Standing, though I’ll confess that last season gave me very few people to actually root for. As a former member of the standup comic community (I’m looking forward to see who ends up on-camera once the show’s trial period rolls through Dallas), I know firsthand how brutal, competitive, and political the standup world is: make no mistake, the people that get anywhere on this show are out for blood, and the drama behind the scenes has to rival the stunning backstabbery of Survivor’s most evil players.
