Vancouver 2010
Vancouver 2010, The notice went out during the summer of 2008 for volunteer opportunities at the XXI Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The Vancouver Olympics Organizing Committee (VANOC) estimated over 75,000 people throughout Canada and the world applied.

At that time, applicants had to fill out a five-page, online form which required some computer savvy.
This was the first stage of the rocket, so to speak. The organizers were very clear about expectations. It was like a caveat emptor. For instance:
* for sports-specific venues and Olympic villages there would be a minimum of 13 shifts ranging from 8-10 hours each
* for ceremonies, team members would be required to contribute hundreds of hours
* it would be necessary to communicate electronically
* accommodation in Vancouver or Whistler, while not mandatory, was tantamount to being so in practice
* attendance at training sessions was also mandatory
If one felt that they could rise to the challenge then they sent in the application. That first thrust was jettisoned and applicants waited for…
Stage Two- Olympic Dream or Reality
Several months later, if the applicant received a phone call from VANOC, there was an invitation to begin the Olympic journey, although it was made clear that it was not a guarantee of a position. First the potential volunteer had to procure a security check with the police and bring it and a passport preferably to a mandatory introductory, five hour, training session at the Pacific National Exhibition site on Vancouver’s Hasting St., at his/her own expense.
