SANAA: At least 26 people were shot dead and hundreds wounded on Sunday when security forces fired on demonstrators who charged police lines in Yemen’s capital Sanaa, in a dramatic escalation of protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Gunfire and explosions were heard late into the night and protesters vowed to continue demonstrations on Monday morning.
A Reuters witness earlier saw security forces fire at protesters from buildings and use water cannon and tear gas to hold back tens of thousands of demonstrators.
Some of the protesters were wielding batons or throwing petrol bombs at police cars.
“Why are you still sitting here? Get moving everyone, move.
Go defend the martyrs’ honor,” blared a voice on loudspeakers in Change Square, where thousands have camped out in tents for eight months to demand an end to Saleh’s 33-year rule.
Hundreds still in the ramshackle camp answered the call, running and chanting “God is great, freedom!” as they streamed down the street.
“This is the worst day I’ve seen in three months. We’re expecting more dead to come in,” said doctor Jamal al-Hamdani, who was treating dozens of patients with bullet wounds.
The injured were rushed in on stretchers and laid out on blood-streaked floors in a mosque being used as a makeshift hospital.
Medics there estimated some 342 had suffered gunshot wounds, with 36 in a critical condition.
The face of one dead man was torn away from an injury medics said appeared to be caused by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) fired at his head. AGENCIES
Bollywood’s Salman Khan to have surgery in US

MUMBAI: Leading Bollywood actor Salman Khan is to have surgery in the United States to correct a facial nerve disorder that leaves him in excruciating pain, he said in an article published on Friday.
The 45-year-old star of blockbuster films like “Dabangg” (Fearless) wrote in the Hindustan Times newspaper that he had been prescribed strong medication to alleviate the symptoms, which first began four years ago.
But the drugs were ineffective and he has been in constant agony for the last year, leaving him unable to eat or drink anything cold.
“The pain is a bit too much now. So I’m going to the US to get it fixed,” he wrote in the English-language daily.
“Now, we’re getting down to something we should have done a long time ago — taking care of it.”
Doctors diagnosed Khan with trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve disorder caused by pressure on the nerve carrying sensations from the brain to the face, leading to stabbing or electric shock-like pain.
Khan said that tests, including an MRI scan, also identified an aneurysm, which caused a swelling of the blood vessels in the brain.
“That has a chance of bleeding and could be fatal. But they’re just scaring me,” he added.
Trigeminal neuralgia is thought to be associated with ageing. Pain is localised in one part of the face, usually the eye, cheek or jaw and can make everyday tasks like eating or brushing teeth excruciating.
With pain in his jaw, it once took him 90 minutes to eat an omelette, Khan said.
Tests had determined the condition was caused by veins wrapped around the nerve, he added.
The surgery means he will miss the release of his new film “Bodyguard” on August 31, which also stars Kareena Kapoor. AGENCIES

Hrithik Roshan down with malaria

It’s an important week for Hrithik Roshan as his big film Guzaarish releases this Friday (Nov 19) but as luck would have it, Hrithik has fallen ill. The actor has been unwell for almost ten days now with high fever and body ache and it’s reported that he is suffering from malaria.
In spite of having high fever, Hrithik continued with the promotions of Guzaarish all of last week. He shot for a special episode of Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in Mumbai, and then even travelled with co-star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for a promotional tour to Dubai and London. After his return to Mumbai, Hrithik even travelled to Ahmedabad on Saturday to promote his film, but crashed immediately after returning home.
Since then, Duggu has been feeling very weak and been on bed rest for most of the time. In fact Hrithik even cancelled his trip to Kolkata for the promotions, as there was no way he could travel in this condition.
We hope the actor is back to being his fittest very soon and wish him a speedy recovery.
