AHMADABAD: India will look to extend their dominance of Test cricket when they take on a struggling New Zealand in a three-match series starting on Thursday.

The world number one Test side go into the contest on the back of a 2-0 defeat of Australia at home last month and look primed for another triumph in the traditional format of the game.

Daniel Vettori’s Black Caps, who are languishing at number eight in the Test rankings, hope to recover from an embarrassing 4-0 one-day series loss to minnows Bangladesh.

“The Bangladesh tour was extremely disappointing,” Vettori told reporters in Ahmedabad. “We will try to rectify that in India. It’s a fresh start for us.

“It’s Test cricket and we have new players here and they have not been affected by what happened in Bangladesh,” said Vettori, who will be playing his 100th Test for the Black

MELBOURNE: Australia’s cricketers remain convinced their test victory over Pakistan in Sydney earlier this year was achieved fairly after the contest has once again become the subject of match-fixing allegations.

On Saturday, police in London arrested a man for offering bribes to some Pakistan players for spot fixing in the fourth test against England at Lord’s following claims in the tabloid newspaper, the News of the World.

The man also told the newspaper the Sydney test in January, which Australia won by 36 runs after overcoming a 206-run first innings deficit before dismissing Pakistan for 139 in their run chase, had been fixed.

The match was investigated by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit, while the Pakistan tour of Australia, in which the tourists lost all of their matches, was the subject to an inquiry by the Pakistani board.

Thieves have been targeting DeKalb County school buses and making off with some critical parts.
Police said the thieves are stealing the batteries – making it impossible to start the buses. The problem is costing the district a lot of money and aggravation.
The problem has cost taxpayers thousands of dollars and students hours of valuable classroom time.
“I think it’s horrible because we all suffer, you know? The child, parents, taxpayers…we suffer,” said bus driver Alice Maddox.
Each school bus has three batteries and with some of the battery compartments unlocked and the gates wide open at bus depots, like one in Decatur, the buses are easy targets.
A source inside DeKalb County schools told Channel 2 Action News that thieves have hit several bus parking depots, taking more than 60 batteries from buses at Cedar Grove Middle School. On Tuesday, thieves stole 14 from buses at Henderson Middle School. A week ago, 70 batteries were stolen from Stevenson High School buses. At $75 a battery, that’s nearly $11,000 down the drain.
Mechanics can’t replace the batteries fast enough. And bus drivers worry about whether their buses will crank each day when they arrive, or if their students will be stranded.
Bowen insists that the expenditure is necessary and said he hopes to cap the contract at $25,000.

On Monday, the school board is scheduled to approve a budget with $115 million in cuts, including 430 layoffs and increases in class sizes. Administrators are already scrambling to find another $2.35 million to cut after the board voted Monday night to delay closing schools, which was included as a cost savings in the fiscal year 2011 budget.

Bowen said line item cuts will not be made to pay for the public relations contract. Instead, the communications budget will be trimmed.

The PR firm would assist the current communications staff. Communications director Julie Rhame said the system employs five people in communications and three working for its TV station.

The request for proposals says the school system is looking for someone who can help the district “mitigate adverse news reports and engage stakeholders” and provide “crisis response management” and “creation of good will and positive school district developments.”

ajmal kasab

ajmal kasabMUMBAI: An Indian judge on Thursday condemned to death the sole surviving gunman involved in the 2008 Mumbai siege after a year-long trial over the bloody attacks that traumatised the nation.

Judge M.L. Tahaliyani imposed the death penalty against Pakistani national Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab on four counts of murder, waging war against India and conspiracy and terrorism offences.

“He should be hanged by the neck until he is dead,” he said. “I don’t find any case for a lesser punishment than death in the case of waging war against India, murder and terrorist acts.”

Kasab, 22, dressed in a traditional white tunic, sat with his head in his hands staring at the floor of the dock as the judge issued the sentence, three days after the Pakistani’s conviction on Monday.7a56f4a050bstory ajmal kasab

Tahaliyani said the evidence showed “previous, meticulous and systematic planning” of the atrocity, which left 166 people dead and hundreds injured and led India to halt peace talks with its arch-rival Pakistan.

“Brutality was writ large,” he added, and the offences were “of exceptional depravity.”

Branded a “killing machine” and “cruelty incarnate” by the prosecution, Kasab was the only gunman caught alive in the 60-hour assault by 10 militants on hotels, a railway station, a restaurant and Jewish centre.
New Delhi, which suspended peace talks with Islamabad after the attacks, wants Pakistan to convict the alleged masterminds, namely the founder of the Lashkar-i-Taiba (LT) militant group, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, and key operative Zarar Shah.
Hafiz Saeed, head of the Jamaatud Dawa charity, which is seen as a front for the LT, is the third figure blamed by India.

Since the beginning of Kasab’s trial, new evidence has come to light about the planning of the atrocity after the arrest of Pakistani-American David Headley in Chicago last year.

The 49-year-old, who changed his name from Daood Gilani, admitted to spending two years eluding security forces as he cased out Mumbai for the LT.

wade mcgilberry

d301e7fd33tch580 wade mcgilberry The Atlanta Braves might want to hire Wade McGilberry as a pitching coach.

The Mobile, Ala., 24-year-old has won 2K Sports’ much-hyped $1 million prize for being the first person to throw a perfect game on MLB 2K10. That someone actually pulled off the feat isn’t particularly surprising given the video game skills of many Americans. What is absolutely gobsmacking, however, is that McGilberry did it less than 24 hours after the game was released and that he did it using Braves starter Kenshin Kawakami.

We’ll take the last part first. McGilberry bought the game at midnight on the day it came out and then lost an argument with his wife about skipping work to try and throw a perfecto. He got home from work, fired up the XBox and camcorder needed to verify the effort and got to work. His first five tries ended in failure, according to Darren Rovell of CNBC, but his sixth try went the distance. All told, it was 90 minutes of effort for a pretty lucrative prize. He submitted the tape and began a long waiting process.

2K Sports kept the contest open for two more months, either because it took a while to verify the perfect game or so they could sell more games with the prospect of winning the big prize. We’ll let your level of cynicism decide that one but don’t get too angry at the corporate guys. They’re out a cool million on this one because no insurance company would back the contest. Since no one had ever tried a stunt like this before, there was no way to generate odds of how likely it was to happen.

Now, back to the really shocking part of the story: Kenshin Kawakami. It would surprise most people to hear that Kawakami, 0-5 with a 5.47 ERA for Atlanta this year, went a full inning without giving up a hit or a walk. The fact that McGilberry could steer him all the way to a perfect game says a lot about his skills as a gamer.

The only other thing we’d like to know is what compelled him to use Kawakami in the first place.
