2011 FLL Robot World Cup opens in China
April 13, 2011 by Trend PK
Hangzhou No. 2 Middle School team finally won the championship and would play in the world final to be held in the Netherlands in June as the Chinese representative team.
Contestants have to complete 14 contestant items within two and a half minutes with the robot they have built themselves, and scores will be given based on the performance of each item. The China Open Match of 2011 FLL Robot World Cup carried the theme of “Bio-science”, such as doing the “bandaging and giving emergency treatment to broken bones and automatically recognising and sorting out dead cells”.
Nevertheless, scores obtained from the performance at scene would not determine the outcome of each constant team. In order to test whether these precision or sophisticated robots are completed by these little contestants on their own, they have to answer the referees queries and explain on his or her designs ideas for the programme. Then, the referees give scores by taking into account the whole processes and all the items must be completed by the contestant pupils themselves.
The FLL Robot World Cup competition, first held in 1998, has entered China since 2003. Nowadays, the country s contestant teams have grown 112 teams from merely some 40 at the first event.
Special show reel on Big B’s life and epic films to be shown before KBC 4
At a celebration party at the Marriott on Monday evening, the Big B would be cutting a 68-kilo cake, 1 kilo for each year of his life.
While the world sings ‘Happy Birthday’ to the Big B, Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan sing together for the first time in a song composed by the Big B himself! Find that hard to believe? But it’s the truth.
The Big B is a huge aficionado of music and singing. He in fact intends to learn to play the piano soon. But for now he has turned composer for a song that has been sung by the Big B and Abhishek Bachchan.
The song would be part of a comprehensive bio-documentary showcasing the 68-year life-span of Amitabh Bachchan which will be telecast on his birthday on Monday. The Big B has not only taken active and complete interest in the material going into the audio-visual show reel–going so far as to provide never-before pictures, advising on the footage to be used and making suggestions on chronological data relating to his life story– the mega-star has also taken time off from his cluttered schedule to compose the theme song.
While the Big B himself is characteristically dismissive of what could be seen as his first decisive step into direction and filmmaking, Ajit Thakur CEO of Sony Entertainment, the channel which will be telecasting the historic bio-documentary sheds startling light on the project. “Mr. Bachchan has indeed composed a song for the show reel and also sung for it along with Abhishek and composers Vishal-Shekhar.”
The show reel introducing the new season of Kaun Banega Crorepati has virgin footage and rare pictures of the Big B beginning with his birth in 1942 to present-day.
Informs a source from the channel, “The show reel contains never-before pictures episodes, incidents, scenes and dialogues from Mr. Bachchan’s life and films. For instance he will be reciting a poem by his father poet Harivanshrai Bachchan that he has never recited publicly before. There will be pictures of the Big B and his family that have been brought out into the open for the first time.”
In fact the Big B has personally supervised every aspect of the showreel, lent pictures and footage from his own private library, selected the footage that has grown into the show reel, and zeroed-in on the relevant sequences from his films which he has re-enacted for the first time.
Says the source, “Some of the most famous sequences and dialogues such as the temple scene in Yash Chopra’s Deewaar from Mr. Bachchan’s films have been handpicked by him and re-enacted specially for this show reel on specially erected sets representing the original.”
And in the inaugural episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the first contestant from a small village will be told that the optimum prize money is not Rs. 1 crore but 5 crores.
The surprise on the contestant’s face is the Big B’s biggest birthday gift.
Priyanka Chopra turns dictator in Brazil

She’s hardly the dost-host in Rio de Janeiro where the stunts for Khatron Ke Khiladi (Fear Factor) are being shot.
According to news filtering out of the beaches of Copacabana where the first batch of stunts were shot last week with the 13 contestants, hostess Priyanka Chopra was not kidding when she had said she would make the contestants hate her with her instructions.
According to at least 2 contestants who spoke from the location, Priyanka has transformed into quite a whip-wielding dictator in the sizzling climes of Brazil. She makes the contestants work relentlessly and hardly provides them with a moment of breather to replenish their energy.
Says one of the exhausted contestants, “She carries not a whip, but a whistle which is as good as whip. The whistle is with her throughout from 7.30 am in the morning till late evening when we pack up. And she uses the whistle to intimidate us like no other woman in our lives has ever intimidated us.”
In fact the contestants are so fed up of the whistle that they plan to steal it and throw it into the ocean.
But Priyanka is relentless in her adherence to the regime. Says a source from Rio, “Priyanka is determined to prove she can orchestrate the contestant’s stunts as effectively as Akshay Kumar in the first two seasons of Fear Factor. She is up at dawn and ready to play hard ball with the contestants by 7.30 am every morning. The stunts start by 8.30 am but not before a very close and careful briefing by the stunt director to make sure no one breaks any bones on location.”
Throughout these stunts, Priyanka is as detached dispassionate and ruthlessly professional as a doctor performing an intricate surgery. She does not fraternize with any of the contestants, not even Dino Morea whom she knows well.
Says the source, “The only time she loosens up is towards the evening when she seems more relaxed. Otherwise she is so professional, it’s scary.”
Priyanka says she’s doing her job exactly the way she is supposed to. “We are not here for a picnic. It’s a tough regimen,” she says.

The Bachelor Tenley Pregnant

The Bachelor Tenley Pregnant, Contestant Tenley Molzahn appears to sit down with “Bachelor” Jake Pavelka for some one-on-one time and then confess that she’s pregnant.
The promo cuts SO quickly to the “I’m pregnant” line and SO quickly away that it almost seems as though they cut it from the middle of a sentence, i.e. “I wanted to tell him ‘I’m pregnant’” or “I couldn’t tell my parents ‘I’m pregnant.’” There’s also then a quick cut to Tenley sniffling, like she’s making some big confession.
We would bet dollars to donuts that that’s what it turns out to be. The video is not embeddable, but go check it out for yourself and tell us what you think. But we’d just like to point out that “The Bachelor” franchise in particular is known for its over-hyped editing that turns out to be nothing.

Gossip Girl, Last Season?
It’s a bit of a late rant, but I’ve had it on my mind for a looong time now and I simply must just get it out of my system. Remeber the episode this season when they went to visit Yale?

Speaking of which, it reminds me of the second episode of this season (which aired in September) when Blair was coming back from the Hamptons with “the lord.” She was in THE orange Marc by Marc Jacobs dress of SS08, which is so completely recognizable I was surprised they chose this dress at all. I’m sure a LOT of thought was put into their outfits by a hoard of stylist, so I don’t know what they were thinking.( This post is from an independent writer. Ctrl BG: A Shortcut to Financial News 11/21
The week started off with Pandit’s speech at Citi, announcing their plan to cut 52,000 jobs (yike!) and cut expenses by 20%. Citi’s share began falling as investors worry that these measures will not be able to revive Citi from its current situation- they lost $20.3 bn in the last year and some don’t expect it to be profitable in 2009 as they worry about Citi’s exposure to credit card/mortgage losses and toxic debt. On Thursday, Prince Alwaleed of Saudi Arabia announced that he was boosting his shares in Citi from 4% to 5%. That didn’t give other investors much confidence (not everyone’s Buffet), as Citi shares broke the $5 point that day (a 13 year low). This is a very dangerous level to be at, because many institutional investors are not allowed to own shares below $5 and this could trigger a wave of selling before year end. On Friday Pandit assured employees that he would like to keep the company together and does not wish to spin off its Smith and Barney brokerage unit (their crown jewel I guess?). Still, there are rumors of them finding a merger partner or raising capital in the future. Citi is also pressing members of Congress to put back the ban on short selling, as they claim that it is hurting their stock price. Citi’s stock price ended $3.77 on Friday, down from $20 a month ago and $30 a year ago!
Following the lead of Golman and UBS, other Wall Street banks are being pressured to foregoe execute bonus this year. JP Morgan also announced that they will be cutting 10% of their workforce.
The other big driver this week was the auto industry. Discussions started looking bleak on Wednesday (and thus the huge drop on concerns of an even deeper recession if the auto industry collapses), as Congress members continue to bicker with the Big 3. I’m not too sure about the details (cars just don’t interest me that much), but it sounds like they’re concerned about whether taxpayer’s money is going to waste since the auto industry was already not competitive before the this financial crisis and they want to see a sound plan to change them into healthier companies before they come to their aid. I believe the catch phrase of the week is, “You show us the plan, and we’ll show you the money.” Makes sense to me. They will be meeting again in December for the Big 3 to prove to American that they are worth saving. Oh and they seemed to have came up with a good source of where the $25 bn will come from too. Instead of from TARP, it will come from the money already approved in July to help make more environmentally friendly cars. They will give them this money in advance and the Big 3 will slowly pay back this amount into this pool of funds. Makes complete sense to me. That way, we’re not creating extra debt.
Speaking of politics, Bernanke has not been very popular recently. His abrupt change of the use of TARP surprised many, leaving them to wonder what exactly they voted for. His annoucement that he doesn’t plan to use the rest of the $350 bn of TARP until Obama’s administration comes on board, making one question whether he’s given up already. Claiming twice in the last week that the government’s efforts have succeeded in stabilizing the financial system does not make it true- especially given the crazy market movement this week.
Another major factor contributing to the drop this week is the Fed slashing its outlook for the economy through 2009. They lowered the 2008 GDP forecast from 1-1.6% to 0-1.3% and forecasts that the economy could shrink by 0.2% in 2009. They also raised their unemployment projections sharply higher to 6.3% to 6.5% for 2008 and 7.1 for 2009. In addition, the consumer price index also fell by 1% in October, the biggest drop since 1947, suggesting deflation. Many expect this recession would last longer than the middle of 2009. This is gloomy enough news to send anyone running.
Even Berkshire Hathaway was not immune to this market turbulence. On Wednesday, Berkshire plunged over 12%, its worst day since 1987’s market crash. They’ve been getting a lot of bad press lately, with declining earnings in their insurance operations and stocks. They had 9 straight days of decline after they published their third quarter earnings report. Goldman Sachs and General Electric, Buffet’s most recent purchases, also went below the price he got them for. Some suggested that he needed a new crystal ball. But on Friday, it Berkshire bounced by 16%, to $90,000. This week, Berkshire also got over $1 bn for its shares in Anheuser-Busch, a brewer, as the acquisition of it by InBev was formally completed. Buffet says he’s not worried. Incidentally, Berkshire also significantly boosted its shares in ConocoPhillips this quarter, indicating that he’s bull on oil.
On Friday Obama finally decided on the next Treasury Secretary- Timothy Geithner, the current president of the NY Fed Reserves. This appointment was welcoming news to Wall Street as it rallied back up into the 8000 levels. I’m not going to go into his history but he’s had a LOT of experience and is widely seen as a good candidate for the job.
Overseas, Iceland finally got a $10.2 bn loan on Thursday, from the IMF, Dutch, British and the Nordic countries. And did you know that we still had pirates in this day and age? Earlier this week, it captured the Sirius Star, which has an oil cargo of about $100 mn worth. Apparently piracy is still very prevalent these days, there has been a record of 199 since the beginning of the year- most prominently in the Gulf of Aden near Somalia.
On Thursday, an Indian navy warship sank a Somali pirate vessel. It’s like the Pirates of the Caribbean in modern times!( This post is from an independent writer. The opinions and views expressed herein are those of the author and are not endorsed by trendpk.Com.)
