Hurricane Ida,Tropical Storm Ida:Ida strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it approached the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua on Thursday and was set to make landfall later in the day, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Heavy rains dumped on Nicaragua’s eastern coast and hundreds evacuated from Corn Island, a popular tourist spot.
At 7 a.m. EST (1200 GMT) center of Hurricane Ida was located about 60 miles (100 km) north-northeast of Bluefields and about 85 miles (135 km) south of Puerto Cabezas in Nicaragua.
The hurricane was moving toward the northwest at close to 7 mph (11 kph) and, after making landfall, will move across eastern Nicaragua and Honduras during the next couple of days, the center said.
The storm is expected to weaken as it moves over Nicaragua, but heavy rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.
Coffee producers, just starting a new harvest, are watching weather developments closely, but say their crops in the mountainous regions near the Honduran border are far from strong coastal winds.
Landslides could wash out roads to coffee farms or heavy rain could knock ripening cherries off trees, Luis Osorio, technical director at the national coffee council, said on Wednesday.
The NHC’s longer-term forecast showed Ida passing over Central America and regaining tropical storm strength by Monday off Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. That could take it into the oil and gas-rich Gulf of Mexico.

30 Militants Killed In South Waziristan Street Battles

ISLAMABAD: Troops were Wednesday locked in deadly street battles with Taliban fighters, pushing a ground offensive deeper into militant-held territory, the military said.
A senior military official told AFP the army had ‘taken’ the strategic town of Sararogha in the third week of fighting, while 30 insurgents were reported killed in the last 24 hours.
Pakistan has vowed to quash Tehrik-i-Taliban in South Waziristan, part of the border area with Afghanistan that Washington calls the most dangerous place in the world because of the abundance of Al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters.
Sararogha shot to infamy within the tribal belt as the operational centre of former Tehrik-i-Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone attack in August.
The military provides the only regular information coming from the frontlines. None of the details can be verified because communication lines are down and journalists and aid workers barred from the area.
Pakistan launched its fierce air and ground offensive into the northwest region on October 17, with some 30,000 troops backed by fighters jets and helicopter gunships laying siege to Tehrik-i-Taliban bolt-holes.
‘Today, security forces entered into the important stronghold of terrorists, the town of Ladha. Intense fighting is taking place in (the) streets,’ the military said in its daily update.
It said ‘security forces have cleared a major part’ of Sararogha, but a senior official in northwest Pakistan said the town had been captured.
So far, the military has claimed to have killed more than 390 militants since the operation began, with 45 troops losing their lives.
The long-anticipated assault into South Waziristan came after a spring offensive in and around the northwestern Swat valley, which the government declared a success in July. However, sporadic outbreaks of violence continue.

Google is doing the special Big Bird doodle to celebrate Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary. In fact if you click on the Google doodle with Big Bird’s legs; you will be taken to a search page just of Sesame street.
With the special doodle, it is obvious that the folks at Google love Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, the Cookie Monster and of course Elmo as much we all do. Who does not love the muppets on Sesame Street?
If you ask the Count how old Sesame Street is, he would count you up to 40. Sesame Street first appeared on TV on November 10, 1969.
Sesame Street is the longest running US children program. Sesame Street and its lovable muppets has been educating and entertaining children for 40 years on PBS.
On the November 10th, First Lady Michelle Obama is scheduled appear on the show. She will be working in the garden and educating the kids to eat healthy.
