Malik seeks account of Indian magistrate on Ajmal Kasaab
ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Abdul Rehman Malik has said Saturday that the Indian magistrate who recorded statement of Ajmal Kasaab, the Mumbai attack suspect, should come to Pakistan to give his account in order for further action into case, Geo news reported Saturday night.
“Sans Indian magistrate’s statement, it is almost impossible to take further correspondence into case”, he said.
He was talking to media here in Islamabad. Malik said terror attacks in Lahore were on cards as security forces and Punjab government had been warned through intelligence report against likelihood of such barbaric attacks.
“Terrorists want to destabilize Punjab government by targeting Lahore time and again”, he observed adding, insurgents merely seek to spark thrill in country despite our government has become triumphant in curbing this menace a great deal.
Advising media, Malik said reporters must stay cautious while reporting incidents of terrorism, hoping that a code of conduct would soon be formulated in this wake after having taken media personnel under confidence.
PM for spirited efforts for implementation of 18th Amendment
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, while commending the hard work done by the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms, has urged for exhibiting the matching spirit in the implementation of the 18th Constitutional Amendment as they have shown during its formulation so that the nation could reap its fruits.
The Prime Minister was talking to the Chairman and members of the Implementation Commission who called on him here at his Parliament House Chamber on Wednesday afternoon.
He advised that the commission should consult persons of knowledge and experience from all walks of life as they can greatly contribute towards the implementation of the 18th Amendment in its letter and spirit.
The Prime Minister added that veteran parliamentarians, lawyers, scholars, opinion makers and other eminent personalities can make positive contributions through their suggestions.
Expressing confidence in the Commission’s dedication and political acumen, Prime
Minister Gilani said that the implementation process would meet the same success as it was seen in the formulation of the 18th Amendment.
He lauded the Commission for promptly holding its first meeting on Wednesday.
US, Pakistan hold high-level talks about bomb plot: US
WASHINGTON: Anne Patterson, the US ambassador to Islamabad, consulted Pakistani leaders on Wednesday about the search for leads into the US probe of a car bomb plot in New York, a US official said.
Philip Crowley, the State Department spokesman, also said Washington has received a “full and complete pledge” of cooperation from Pakistan for the probe into the botched plot allegedly carried out by a Pakistani-American.
Patterson raised the investigation in meetings with Pakistani Asif Ali Zardari and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi as well as in talks with Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Crowley told reporters.
“She will continue to have other meetings with senior Pakistani officials in the coming days… to work collectively on this … investigation,” Crowley said.
But Crowley was vague about what Patterson and the Pakistani leaders discussed.
“We will be exchanging information as the investigation is ongoing,” the spokesman said.
“Whatever leads are generated here in the United States … we would fully expect Pakistan to follow up on,” he said.
“Pakistan, as you are seeing, has already taken its own steps. I”ll defer to the Pakistani government to describe what it is doing.”
In Islamabad, the Pakistani Army warned that it had yet to establish a link between Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-American implicated in the bomb plot, and the country”s main militant stronghold in Waziristan.
According to the US criminal complaint, Shahzad admitted “after his arrest that he had received bomb-making training in Waziristan, Pakistan.”
The alleged visit to the Al-Qaeda and Taliban stronghold in Pakistan”s semi-autonomous tribal belt on the Afghan border presumably occurred during a five-month trip the complaint says Shahzad made to Pakistan.
He returned on February 3 without his wife and told immigration officials that he had been visiting his parents, the complaint said.
Waziristan is the powerbase of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has been the only militant group to claim Saturday”s attempted bomb attack, albeit in a move widely disputed in Pakistan and the United States.
18th Amendment revival of Parliament’s power: President
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari said on Wednesday that one of the greatest achievements of the government was the 18th Amendment, which had restored powers to the Parliament in accordance with the 1973 Constitution given unanimously to the country by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
To cleanse the constitution of all undemocratic articles introduced into it by unelected and autocratic regimes has been a dream of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the party has realized her dream, the President said. He said this while addressing a gathering of PPP office-bearers, ticket holders and counsellors belonging to Sheikhupura division in the Presidency.
The meeting participated by several hundred party workers was also attended by Secretary General of the Party, Senator Jahangir Badar, Federal Minister for Water Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Minister of State Ch. Safdar Warraich, Ch. Manzoor, Ms. Fouzia Habib, Senator Faisal Raza Abidi and Spokesperson to the President former Senator Farhatullah Babar.

He said that no one relinquishes power readily, but he gave up the powers most willingly to strengthen the Parliament and realize the Party’s dream to revive the democratic Constitution.
President Zardari said that the UN Inquiry Commission in the assassination of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had strengthened the hands of the government to pursue the investigations vigorously and expose the culprits before the whole world.
Swiss cases a dead issue; AG tells SC
ISLAMABAD: Attorney General of Pakistan told the Supreme Court (SC) that no letter was sent to Swiss officials for the cases concerning President Asif Ali Zardari, Geo News reported Thursday.
The court bristling at this government step, summoned the Federal Law Secretary and Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
A five-member SC bench headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk heard the NRO implementation case and a case regarding illegal promotion of Riaz Sheikh, the FIA official.
The court queried whether the sentence awarded to Riaz was completed or not. The AG was sought to answer on this along with the report on the NRO implementation case.
The AG Maulvi Anwarul Haq presented a written response of the Law Secretary to the court. According to the statement, the matter relating Swiss cases came to an end; hence, there is no need for further correspondence.
On this, Justice Raja Fayyaz said the government is not taking the matter regarding implementing SC’s verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), adding how many years government wants to take in its implementation.
Justice Jawwad Owais Khawja said the AG may keep saying anything of choice, adding he asked the AG as to the stumbling block in the implementation, so that these hurdles could be removed.
Justice Nasirul Mulk said asked the AG whether Swiss officials were contacted after SC verdict on the NRO on December 16. The AG replied in negation.
The court summoned the NAB Chairman and the Law Secretary for not writing any letter to Swiss officials and later on, adjourned the hearing till May 13.
