Strong quake hits Costa Rica

WASHINGTON: A 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on Monday night, the United States Geological Survey said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage caused by the offshore quake centered 46 miles (74 kms) southwest of the capital San Jose at a depth of 18.2 miles (29kms) below the sea.

SAN JOSE: A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off Costa Rica”s Pacific coast on Thursday, although residents of the capital San Jose said they felt only minor shaking in buildings.
The earthquake struck 55 miles (88 km) south of San Jose at a depth 32.9 miles (53 km), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Charlie Davies Car Accident
Charlie Davies Car Accident, Team USA men’s national forward Charlie Davies was seriously injured in a car accident early Tuesday in Virginia. Davies spent more than three hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, according to a spokesman for U.S. Soccer. Another person in the car was killed.
“Obviously, as a team we were saddened to learn this news,” coach Bob Bradley said in a statement posted on the website of U.S. Soccer. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family and people in the car and the families of others involved. As a team, we support each other in a moment that has hit us hard to ensure everybody.”
Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Md., was pronounced dead at the scene at the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Arlington, Virginia Another woman who was riding in the car was taken to Washington Hospital Center for treatment after his car slammed into metal fence on a stretch of road between the Memorial Bridge and the Pentagon around 3:15 am, said Sgt. David Schlosser, a spokesman for police in the U.S. park.
It was unclear who was driving the car, but Michael Kammarman, a spokesman for U.S. Soccer, said no other members of the U.S. team or the staff involved. Davies’s parents were en route to Washington, San Diego.
Davies, who is in Washington with the U.S. team for its World Cup qualifying final of Wednesday’s match against Costa Rica, has become a leading striker Bradley coach after this year’s star performances. He played 78 minutes in the team’s victory 3-2 victory over Honduras in San Pedro Sula on Saturday. With this victory, the Americans secured a place in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa next summer.
In June, The Cross of praise for his breakout performance in the Confederations Cup in South Africa, scoring a goal and always attacking a spark to the lineup of the United States against the world powers Spain and Brazil.

Brazil in semifinals at U20 World Cup
CAIRO: Brazil in semifinals at U20 World Cup, Brazil beat Germany 2-1 to reach the semifinals of the Under-20 World Cup on Saturday, with substitute Maicon coming off the bench to score both goals.
Lewis Holtby put Germany ahead in the 73rd minute, but with two minutes remaining Maicon exploited a gap in the German defense and beat goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler at his near post.
A mix up among Germany’s defenders in the first minute of injury time allowed Maicon space and he expertly lobbed Zieler.
Brazil will play either Costa Rica or the United Arab Emirates in the semifinal. They play later Saturday.

Rene Simoes Will Be Costa Rica Football Coach Of Brazilian
SAN JOSE: Brazilian Rene Simoes will coach Costa Rica in the last leg of World Cup qualifying.
Simoes was appointed on Wednesday, a day after Rodrigo Kenton was fired following three straight losses in qualifying.
Simoes resigned last month after only two weeks as coach of second-division Portuguesa in Brazil, after saying armed men threatened the players in the locker room after a loss. He also coached Jamaica at the 1998 World Cup and Brazil’s women’s team.
Costa Rica, which once led the North and Central American and Caribbean region, is fourth with 12 points following losses to Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador. The United States leads with 16 points, one ahead of Mexico and three in front of Honduras.
The top three teams qualify and the No. 4 team faces a playoff with the fifth-place team in South America.
Costa Rica has two qualifiers left, hosting Trinidad and Tobago on Oct. 10, then closing four days later in the United States.
Simoes said he believes Costa Rica still has a good chance of qualifying.
“A team that has 12 points in five games has to be strong,” he said. “South Africa 2010 is possible because Costa Rica has a strong team.”
He expressed his “great admiration for the team and the country” and asked fans to be patient with his Spanish.
