HE FAMILY of a 21-year-old student who has lost her fight with cancer have paid tribute to an ‘incredible young woman with a heart of gold’.
Megan Elizabeth Fletcher, known by her nickname Meg or Megz, died after a 16-month battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Speaking from the family home in Wern, Bersham, her mum Fiona Fletcher, 47, said: “She loved life, she loved laughter, she loved energy, she loved friends and she loved family.
“She had a smile for everyone.”
Meg was born in Cumbria and then spent her early school years at Minera Primary School.
Her secondary education was in Dubai where her father Ian, 49, works in health and safety at oil and gas plant Dusup.
The family, including Meg’s sister Becky, 19, split their time between Bersham and Dubai where they also have a home.
Becky said Meg was “intelligent, smart and witty.”
Fiona now hopes to create a booklet of advice to those suffering with the type of cancer Meg had. She said: “We want young people to know about Meg’s journey and know what she stood for.”
Ian said: “Meg had cancer, but she never wanted cancer to define who she was.
“I am so proud of the way she approached life, always trying to do her best, which was important to her.”
Meg, who had many close friends and loved butterflies, fell ill on a Eurotrip adventure holiday in Austria in the summer of 2008 and had to return home.

Miguel Cotto and Yuri Foreman duked it out at Yankee Stadium tonight in the first boxing match the stadium has seen in over 30 years.
Cotto was the obvious crowd favorite, and Foreman endured some boo’s when he entered, although he had plenty of supporters there himself.
In round 3, a cut opened up above Foreman’s eye, which did not seem to bode well for him. In round 4, Foreman started mounting an offense, bloodying Cotto’s face. But Cotto came back to dominate the second half of the round. Round 5 another close round, although Cotto just seemed to be punching harder. In Round 7, Foreman slipped and fell and appeared to have a knee injury. He tried to keep fighting but went down again. He kept fighting though, clearly having trouble staying on his feet. Cotto pressed his advantage, landing a brilliant 
uppercut. Foreman shows some serious heart in continuing. He has no footwork left. He almost went down again, and the towel comes in the ring from Foreman’s corner. But the ref does not allow the fight to end. He clears the ring and continues the fight because Foreman says he does not want to quit. The fight restarted. Round to Cotto. At the beginning of Round 9, Cotto threw a right then followed with a left body shot that put Yuri on one knee, and the ref stopped the fight. Fighting for his father, who died in January, and for his legion of Puerto Rican fans, Miguel Cotto won the first boxing match at the new Yankee Stadium on Saturday. His victory came in bizarre fashion, after Yuri Foreman slipped in the seventh round and limped through the rest of the bout. Cotto won the fight twice, taking it for good 42 seconds into the ninth round. While Foreman carried on courageously, fighting and limping simultaneously, it was Cotto who left with the World Boxing Association super welterweight title belt.
The fight, close for six rounds, turned ugly in the seventh. Foreman fell down, then came up limping and continued with severely limited movement.
Cotto battered Foreman with combinations, prompting Foreman’s wife to lean over the railing in the eighth round and scream to her husband’s corner: “Stop the fight! He can’t move!”
That corner threw the towel, and it hit Cotto in the shoulder, but Foreman pleaded for another chance. Cotto dropped him in the next round with a left hook to the body that appeared less responsible than Foreman’s injury for the ending.
“I’m a world champion,” Foreman said after the fight. “And now I’m a former world champion. But when you have the title you never quit. I didn’t want it to be stopped.”
In his first fight of this magnitude, before a crowd of 20,272, Foreman appeared jumpy early. It was Cotto who went up a weight class, yet it was also Cotto who appeared to be the larger, more intimidating fighter. Between his force and Foreman’s speed, the early rounds proved close and entertaining.
Cotto staggered Foreman with a sharp right hand in the second round. But Foreman returned fire — three sharp, crisp right hands of his own — in the fourth.
The difference in power was clear and decisive from the outset, but those who considered Foreman mere fodder for Cotto underestimated his skills. Cotto kept pursuing, kept charging, but Foreman danced and swayed and countered.
“In my mind, I thought I was winning the fight,” Cotto said.
The night held no shortage of intrigue. It marked the first boxing match in nearly 34 years at any incarnation of Yankees Stadium. It pitted a rabbinical student in Foreman, the World Boxing Association’s super welterweight champion, against Cotto, of Puerto Rico.
Negotiations began in bizarre, only-in-boxing fashion, when promoters from Top Rank Boxing found that the new stadium had already been booked for Saturday — for a bar mitzvah. Promoters came to an agreement with the Ballan family, and both bout and bar mitzvah proceeded without incident. In the co-feature, Vanes Martirosyan was able to beat “Mean” Joe Greene by scores of 98-91 and 96-93 (twice). LAS VEGAS — Rising welterweight Saul Alvarez stopped Jose Miguel Cotto with a rapid flurry of head shots late in the ninth round Saturday night to remain unbeaten.
Featherweight Daniel Ponce De Leon also earned a unanimous decision over Cornelius Lock on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s welterweight bout with Sugar Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand.
Alvarez (32-0-1, 24 KOs), a redheaded teenager from Guadalajara, Mexico, added to his growing reputation in his Las Vegas debut, rallying from a rough first round to outwork Cotto (31-2-1).
“It was just a matter of time,” Alvarez said. “The first round was a little scary, but I gained my confidence as the rounds went on.”
Cotto, the older brother of former champion welterweight Miguel Cotto, had Alvarez stunned on the ropes in the opening minutes. Alvarez shook it off and even sent Cotto stumbling to the canvas in the second round in a questionable knockdown.
Alvarez finally finished with a dominant ninth, repeatedly teeing off on Cotto’s defenseless head until referee Tony Weeks stopped it with 9 seconds left.
“Fighting in Vegas was a great atmosphere,” said Alvarez, who has won 28 straight fights since a draw when he was 15. “I want to come back and fight here again soon.”
Cotto was stopped for the first time in his career.
Ponce De Leon’s fifth straight victory had none of the usual theatrics for which the former 122-pound champion is known. The Mexican fighter gritted out a convincing victory over Lock, a 31-year-old Mayweather protege who has lost three of his last seven bouts.

Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto Video, Filipino Manny Pacquiao made history by becoming the first fighter to win seven world titles in as many weight classes with a stunning final round technical knockout of Miguel Cotto.
Pacquiao looked unstoppable for the third consecutive fight, knocking Cotto down twice in the early rounds Saturday before putting the finishing touches on in the 12th round to claim Cotto’s World Boxing Organization welterweight title.
The Filipino dominated from the second round on, putting a stunning display of boxing skills and laying a savage beating on the Puerto Rican champion at the MGM Grand hotel and casino.
Referee Kenny Bayless finally stopped the slaughter 55 seconds into the final round with Cotto unable to defend himself from Pacquiao’s lightning quick combinations.
“I tried my best to knock him out,” Pacquiao said. “I thought in 11th round they would stop the fight. I am surprise he continued to fight.”
Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) solidified his status as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He also looked unstoppable in his two previous victories dominating the legendary Oscar De La Hoya in December 2008 before destroying Britain Ricky Hatton in just two rounds in May.
This was only his second fight as a welterweight as Pacquiao is now being lined up for a blockbuster fight against American Floyd Mayweather.
“Everybody was saying he was bigger and stronger than me so I wanted to try and test his power,” Pacquiao said of Cotto.
Pacquiao opened slowly in the first round before switching to his up tempo style in the second and then knocking Cotto down for the first time in the third in front of a sold out crowd of about 16,000 at the Grand Garden Arena.
In the next round Pacquiao scored another knockdown this time sending Cotto sprawling across the centre of the ring by landing a left hook.
Both fighters are icons in their homeland and it showed at Friday’s weigh in where the 6,500 packed into the Grand Garden Arena making it one of the largest crowds to ever watch a weigh in for a Las Vegas fight.
Cotto (34-2, 27 KOs) praised Pacquiao by calling him the best fighter he has ever fought.
“I fought everybody and Manny is one of the best all time,” said Cotto, who suffered just the second loss of his superb career. “He jabs and throws. I didn’t know from where the punches were coming and I didn’t protect myself from the punches.”
Pacquiao knocked Cotto down by hurting him for the first time in the third round with a short right hook set up by a left jab. Cotto did not go all the way down but did touch both gloves to the canvas before regaining his balance.
Cotto went down for the second round in a row as Pacquiao came off the ropes and hurt him with a short left hook that sent Cotto sprawling sideways across the ring.
It didn’t take Pacquiao long to systematically break down Cotto’s defence even going to the ropes at different times in the fight to recharge his batteries, confident he could weather any storm Cotto could bring.
“Our plan was to not hurry and take our time early,” Pacquiao said. “We knew his strategy was to counter punch. We were careful in early rounds.
“I was trying to test his power early. I wanted to get hit in the body and head and then when I started control the fight I got aggressive and put pressure on him.”
By the sixth round Cotto’s face was showing signs of wear as both eyes became puffy. By the 11th round the champion was bleeding from both the mouth and nose as his white trucks starting turning a shade of red.
Pacquiao praised Cotto’s courage after the fight saying his opponent surprised him with how much punishment he could take and still come at him.
“Cotto is a tough opponent and he got hit lot of solid punches he didn’t go down,” said Pacquiao, who had to have his ear drained of blood after the fight.
Cotto’s trainer Joe Santiago asked his fighter if he wanted to stop the fight after the eighth round and Cotto said no. His father, who works in his corner for every fight, tried to stop the fight after the 11th round but was voted down by the other members of the corner team.
By this time Cotto’s family had had enough as his wife and young son sitting at ringside left the Grand Garden Arena after the 11th round.
Cotto did not attend the post-fight news conference because he had to go to a Las Vegas hospital for treatment of his cuts and bruises and for x-rays to see if there were any broken bones.
“I just had a fight that’s the way I am supposed to look,” said Cotto when asked how about how the swelling around his face. “I did my best. I fought the best fighter I have ever fought.
“I hope the fans enjoyed the great fight.”
