Two men caught with 260 baby alligators

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers say they surprised two Sumter County men when the men came off Lake Apopka with a couple of sacks full of recently hatched alligators.

Robert “Bo” Martin Duval, 32, and Christopher Cork Scroggins, 22, both of Bushnell, were booked into Lake County jail early Thursday on felony possession/capture of hatchling alligators along with misdemeanour conspiracy charges.

Duval had additional felony charges of possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon. The firearms were concealed under some vegetation in the airboat boat. FWC Officer David Straub and FWC Reserve Officer were on surveillance at the Montverde boat ramp when the two men returned from the night on Lake Apopka.

“You have got me, and I have a lot of alligator hatchlings,” Duval said as the officers approached him and Scroggins.
“Unfortunately, there is an illegal market for hatchling alligators, and people who participate in this type of poaching have no regard for our resources or the laws that protect them,” Straub said.

Officers returned the hatchlings to the lake alive. Duval and Scroggins later bailed out on $13,000 and $3,000 bonds, respectively.

Charges are pending against a woman who assisted the two men at the boat ramp, and the incident is still under investigation.

Possessing/capturing hatchling alligators is a third-degree felony, which, on conviction, carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is a second-degree felony, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Hydrogen fueling station opens in California

Residents of California can take a trip to Orange County and find the world’s first sewage-powered refueling station. Located just off the 405 freeway, the station is located next to the Orange County waste-water treatment plant in Fountain Valley.

The hydrogen fuel offers about 70 miles per gallon and the station can fuel up to 50 automobiles per day with the daily 120 kilograms of hydrogen gas produced at the plant. In order to produce the hydrogen gas, sewage is processed to collect methane. This methane is converted into hydrogen and sent into a fuel cell to power the entire plant with 250 kilowatts of electricity.

The remaining hydrogen is converted into fuel grade hydrogen and sent to the fueling station for consumer use.

He added: “We expect Andrew’s involvement with Middlesex over the next couple of years to be minimal – he has bigger fish to fry with England – but when he is available to play for us he is a great person to have around. His presence is extremely reassuring and he sets a superb example to all our young cricketers.”

Magnitude 6.9 quake hits China, 67 killed

BEIJING: A series of strong earthquakes struck China”s western Qinghai province Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Chinese authorities say at least 67 people died in the quake, which caused houses to quickly crumble, according to witnesses.

The USGS reported on its Web site that a magnitude 6.9 temblor struck an area in southern Qinghai, near Tibet, on Wednesday morning and was followed by two quakes in the same region.

The quake hit the county of Yushu, a Tibetan area in Qinghai, a local news agency cited the China Earthquake Networks Center as saying. The Chinese center measured the quake”s magnitude at 7.1. A local government Web site put the county”s population in 2005 at 89,300, a community of mostly herders and farmers.

The quake sent residents fleeing as it toppled many houses made of mud and wood, said Gasong Nima, the Yushu county television station”s deputy head of news, speaking by phone with state broadcaster CCTV.

“In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake,” the witness said. “In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off.

“Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members,” he said, adding that school buildings had not collapsed but students had been evacuated and were assembled in outdoor playgrounds.

The epicenter of the first quake was located 235 miles (380 kilometers) south-southeast of Golmud, a large city in Qinghai, at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), the USGS said.

Ten minutes later, the area was hit by a magnitude 5.3 quake, which was followed after two minutes by a temblor measuring 5.2, according to the U.S. agency. Both the subsequent earthquakes were measured at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).

Calls to the local Communist Party office and the government of Yushu county and the Qinghai provincial seismological bureau rang unanswered.

In 2008, a magnitude-7.9 quake in Sichuan province left almost 90,000 people dead or missing.
