Imran Khan rejects calls for cricket ban

KARACHI: Pakistani sporting hero Imran Khan brushed aside calls to ban his nation from international cricket until corruption allegations are investigated, saying a country cannot be punished collectively.

Former England captains Ian Botham and Michael Vaughan have demanded Pakistan are kicked out of international cricket until a probe into their cricketers has been completed.

Their calls follow allegations of spot-fixing against Pakistani cricketers during their ongoing tour of England, which triggered a war of words between cricket officials from the two countries.

Former Pakistan cricket captain Khan said a country cannot be thrown out on the basis of allegations.

“In any form of illegal activity you cannot give collective punishment to a country and deprive millions of fans, more so because these are still allegations yet to be proven,” Khan told

MULTAN: Former Pakistan cricket captain, Imran Khan, on Sunday called for stronger national institutions to prevent corruption scandals undermining the country’s favourite sport in the future.

“This whole episode of cricket reflects what is happening in the country,” Khan told reporters in Multan during a flood relief campaign.

“We are regarded as a corrupt country because our institutions are not strong and the same thing is happening in cricket because of ad-hocism in the game.”

“Pakistan cricket has suffered the greatest set-back and it’s going on with further claims of players’ involvement.”

“We have to make our institutions strong because the future of the country is bright and we should not spoil it,” said Khan, who is head of his political party, Tehrik-e-Insaaf. AGENCIES

Shoania’s reception, valima dates announced

LAHORE: Dates of reception and valima to celebrate the wedding of former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis queen Sania Mirza have been announced here on Monday.

The reception will be held in Shoaib’s native city Sialkot on April 25 and the valima will be hosted at a five-star hotel on Mall Road in Lahore on April 27.

Shoaib’s brother-in-law Imran Zafar Malik told Geo News that Shoaib Malik would return home with his bride Sania as soon as he gets back his passport.

He said that the invitation cards for the reception and the valima have been given for printing.

Imran told that about 1,000 persons will be invited at the valima ceremony.

He said that 15-20 guests from India are expected to come to Pakistan. They include the family members and close relatives and friends of Sania Mirza.

His marriage to Sania is scheduled to happen on April 15. Sania”s family members, however, chose to remain silent on his visit.

The wedding is likely to take place in Hyderabad. There was speculation in the Pakistani media that the venue may be shifted to Dubai.

Shoaib, who reportedly reached Hyderabad late on Friday night, was spotted standing on the balcony of Sania”s house. He was speaking on his cell phone while Sania and her mother stood beside him talking to each other.

The controversy surrounding Shoaib”s alleged earlier marriage to local girl Ayesha Siddiqui has been raging in the media during the last couple of days.

Sania”s announcement to wed Shoaib also drew flak from various quarters, including the Shiv Sena. Tennis and cricket fans have been posting their views liberally on websites.

While some voiced their support for Sania and her choice, others expressed their disappointment with her decision and the subsequent developments.

In reaction to this, the tennis star posted a tweet, thanking all the people, including the media, who have supported her and Shoaib.

“I and my family know what the truth is, we”ve known it all along and we have confidence in God”s justice,” she wrote.

Later in the night, however, Sania”s friend Anil Kumar Yadav said there was no change in the venue of the wedding.

Former Pakistan batsman Saeed Anwar led the funeral prayers held in Jamia Masjid of DD Block, which were attended by cricketers Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed, Salim Malik, Intikhab Alam and Muhammad Yousuf among hundreds of other people including social workers and political figures. Rasm-e-Qul and Qur’an Khawani will be offered on Tuesday at 5:15 pm in Z-Block Defence.

Wasim told reporters that he had lost a close companion and friend and it would be difficult to bear the loss of his wife. “I just hope I have the courage and fortitude to raise my two kids properly,” he said.
Huma, 42, a psychologist and hypnotherapist died in a hospital in Chennai on Sunday after multiple organ failure.

The hospital had earlier quoted sources saying that the condition of Huma Wasim critical. She had a multiple organ failure suffered and was put on ventilator support, sources said.
