Australia beat England in 4th ODI
LONDON: England recorded their best run of eight consecutive one-day victories leading up to today”s London encounter, but Australia found their A-game to gain some revenge with a comprehensive 78-run defeat. Their mammoth 290 for 5 was set up by an aggressive Ricky Ponting and a fluent Michael Clarke, while Ryan Harris took 5 for 32 to thwart a reply led by Michael Yardy”s first international fifty.
By the time Yardy, a useful middle-order accumulator for Sussex, dug in with a 63-ball 57, England had wilted to 90 for 4. Andrew Strauss, dropped off Shaun Tait”s second ball, flayed some cracking cuts in his steady 37 before falling to another sharp burst from the towering pacer. Before that, though, Ryan Harris had castled Craig Kieswetter with an in-cutter to end a 37-run stand, and then trapped Kevin Pietersen after he had struck two handsome fours off Doug Bollinger.
Tait romped back for a superb second spell that yielded two maidens and the scalp of Strauss, while Paul Collingwood was a bit unfortunate when an outside-leg-pitched Steven Smith delivery gave the leggie his first scalp. Eoin Morgan, typically enterprising and bold, allied to add 50 with Yardy, who then shared 48 with Tim Bresnan.
Morgan (47) hit three sixes, one of them plowed off successive deliveries into the midwicket crowd, but Harris returned to find his edge to Tim Paine before Smith (2 for 59) drifted one around Luke Wright”s pads to bowl him (151 for 6). Yardy and Bresnan then chivvied the equation to 93 in ten overs, but after seeing the left-hander to his fifty, Bresnan holed out to long-on off Harris. Bollinger and Harris wiped off the innings to complete a professional thrashing and avoid a whitewash.
The victory, though, had been set up by a fine alliance between Ponting and Clarke. Ponting may be a bit older and slower, but retains his bristling aggression, while Clarke, after months of having his one-day spot questioned, showed his capabilities as a fluent stroke-player and finished a run shy of a century. Paine in particular had been pained in an opening partnership of 33 in 55 when Bresnan grabbed his first wicket of the series, and despite Shane Watson”s clean thrashing (41, five fours and a six) over cover and down the ground, it wasn”t till Ponting and Clarke laid a platfrorm that Australia really dominated proceedings.
Watson slog-swept to his downfall (73 for 2) but Ponting”s strengths had been fed as he clipped and cut his way into form, and Clarke–dropped early off Graeme Swann–then drove two boundaries off the culprit, James Anderson. Not much effort was required for the rate to skip at a run a ball through the middle overs, with intelligent running and sharp placement from the pair, who shared 155 before Ponting, opting for the third Powerplay, found Strauss at cover straight away.
Cameron White (17) put on 35 with Clarke, but the icing on the cake was a peach of a cameo from Steven Smith, who bunted four fours in an 8-ball cameo to take the total skimming to 290. It was a stout performance to end England”s flurry of victories, and an ample reminder of just how competitive this Australian side can be at their best.

Dr. Muhammad Kamal, of Jamat-e-Islami, Barrister Iftikhar Danish (Independent), Ejaz Khan Jazi of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf and Haji Gulzar Awan of Pakistan Aman Party are also in the run but their chances are not as good as the candidates of PML(N) and Awami Muslim League.

MNAs Hanif Abbasi, Malik Abrar and other PML(N) local leadership is extending all out help to the party candidate while PPP, in accordance with the Charter of Democracy (CoD), has not fielded its candidate against the PML(N) candidate.
On the other hand, the PML(Q) headed by Chaudhary Shujat Hussain has announced its support for Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. Sheikh Rashid was also targeted by the unknown attackers in his election office at Khyaban-e-Sir Syed in which three of his supporters were killed.
A joint investigation team comprising ISI, IB and Police office had been constituted to arrest the culprit and ascertain the fact behind this attack.

SA win 1st ODI by 45 runs; Taibu century in vain
South Africa won the 1st ODI of the 2-Match Series against Zimbabwe by 45 runs at the Willowmoore Park in Benoni yesterday. Zimbabwe who had put the homeside to bat first were taken for 295/6 in the allotted 50 overs.
For South Africa, Opener Hashim Amla struck 80 from 96 balls while AB de Villiers came up with 51 from 51 balls and Albie Morkel scored a breezy 50 not out from 39 balls.
Zimbabwe got to 250 for 6 in reply which was a feat considering that they were reduced to 48 for 5 in 17 overs. Tatenda Taibu returned back into the Zimbabwe team to score an unbeaten 103 from 112 balls (with 6 fours and 3 sixes). He was well supported by Stuart Matsikenyeri who made 86 from 87 balls (with 8 fours and a six). Taibu got the Man of the Match.

Younis and Pakistan under pressure to win the Series
Not many would have fancied New Zealand’s chances of winning the second ODI. The Pakistani top order has shown us how to lose a match not once but twice if you got to include the first ODI as well.
Surprisingly, the Skipper himself – Younis Khan has been the culprit so far in both the matches. In the first match, he got out playing a reckless drive when Pakistan didn’t even open its account and in the second game, he never took any risks that were needed with the required run rate climbing up beyond the middle order’s reach. Younis will have to lead the team from the front and with Afridi being consistently successful, it looks like a lot of pressure is mounting on the present Pakistan Captain. Younis performs under pressure, one knock which proves is a century against India in the Kitply Cup Final when his team was chasing 300 plus target. So Pakistan can pin their hopes on him to come good in today’s third and final ODI. Watch Live Cricket
The Kiwis will be hoping to win the toss and bat again. Not sure if Brendon McCullum can strike gold twice so its important for someone like Ross Taylor to play to his potential. The young man is a class act but is not that mature enough to bring out the best from himself on a consistent basis. I guess just occupying the crease should be enough for this talented Ross Taylor. With the kind of shots he has got, a slow start can always be converted into a run-a-ball knock within no time.
Another player who is having a certain problem is Salman Butt. His temperament is surely proved after a century in front of a 100,000 people in Kolkata against India a few years back. Butt is a good player to watch because of his unique wristy drives on the off side. The left hander has plenty of problems, he has done enough damage I suppose for Pakistan with his slow batting. If I remember he was instrumental in Pakistan’s loss in the T20 World Cup final against India in 2007 because of playing too many dot balls. Well the same had happened in the second ODI as well, so Butt has got to change his game plan slightly. He needs to show the urgency in his batting so that the middle order batsmen do not get burdened of scoring runs quickly all the time. I have this gut feeling that in an ODI, Pakistan should not have two specialist openers. They should have atleast one opener who can do the demolishing act during the 1st powerplay when the ball is coming onto the wicket.
Pakistan seriously needs to tinker with its top order. It will be good if either Kamran Akmal or Shoaib Malik open the innings. The second ODI saw lot of six hitters including Mohammad Yousuf getting wasted under the pressure of achieving the tough task of getting about 160 runs in the last 20 overs. And again, Umar Akmal is needed for Pakistan, it was shocking to see him sit on the bench in the last ODI. Either Khalid Latif or Salman Butt should be dropped for this decider to make way for Umar Akmal.
Well to round off, Pakistan’s chances of a win today is more when they bat first, get about 250 and leave the rest to their bowling. New Zealand’s chances are by batting first too but they would need 300 like in the last game. Their fielding will make sure that Pakistan will have to chase that extra 20-30 runs always.
