LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif today denounced the current federal government as the most corrupt in the country’s history

“The sooner we get rid of this government, the better it is for Pakistan,” said the chief minister while distributing free laptops among students at Punjab University.

Sharif said “Pakistan was dived into two parts in 1971, yet we did not take steps to improve the situation.”

He announced that his government would allocate 300, 000 free laptops in the next budget.

GUJRAT: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif Friday advised the government against being beggars.

Addressing party’s workers convention here, the PML-N chief said the biggest problem of the country today is power load shedding and unemployment; he vowed to end these problems when his party comes into power.

The PML-N chief said, “We should not beg for money from any country; instead, we should work hard for the development of our country.”

Sharif lamented on the overall situation of the country, saying people now need change as they are unhappy with the current government. TrendPK

State Department U.S. issues travel alert after bin Laden killingWASHINGTON: The U.S. State Department on Sunday warned Americans worldwide of “enhanced potential for anti-American violence” following the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

“Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations,” the State Department said in a statement.

NEPRA approves power tariff increase for Faisalabad’s IPP, RPP

FAISALABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved power tariff increase for an independent power producer (IPP) and a rental power plant (RPP) of Faisalabad on Tuesday.

According to NEPRA notification issued today, Faisalabad’s Northern Power Generation Company’s (NPGC) Unit no.1 and 2 have been allowed to increase their power tariffs by Rs. 3.41 and Gulf Rental Power Plant (GRPP) by 38 paisa per unit.

After this current increase the power tariff of NPGC has jumped to Rs. 21.74 and of GRPP to Rs. 20.34 per unit.

The NEPRA has allowed this power tariff hike to counter price hike of furnace oil; the increased new power tariff will be charged for the period of March 15 to March 31. TrendPK

Cold winds to lash Pakistan

KARACHI: The Meteorological office has forecast a sharp surge in cold weather conditions across Pakistan after three days.

The intensity of the current cold wave is likely to increase as chilly winds are about to enter Pakistan from Siberia.

The cold winds will affect Karachi and others parts of Sindh.

The temperature is expected to drop to five degrees celsius in Karachi. TrendPK

Collingwood, England’s ‘Blue Collar’ man

SYDNEY: Paul Collingwood earned a reputation as a flinty ‘blue collar’ competitor and an outstanding fielder in his 68 Tests for England.

Collingwood, who announced his retirement from Test cricket during the final Sydney Test on Thursday, was an integral part of England’s Ashes series victories in 2009 and in the current contest in Australia.

Collingwood, 34, will remain as England’s Twenty20 captain and play in the one-day team at next month’s World Cup on the sub-continent.

He played in the last Test of the 2005 home series as Michael Vaughan’s team won back the Ashes and played in all five Tests of the 2009 and 2010/11 series. He also was in all five Tests on the 2006/07 Down Under, which Australia won 5-0.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast more rain and snowfall for Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and adjoining hilly areas today.

The other parts of the country especially Balochistan and Sindh will also remain in the grip of severe cold wave during next 2 days.

According to Met analysis, the westerly wave southwesterly winds with a cloud cover over upper parts are likely during next 48 to 72 hours.

The spokesman said that the foggy conditions are likely to develop again during next 2-3 days and dense fog is expected over Motorways sectors; Pindi Bhattian to Lahore, Lahore to Gujranwala and Swabi to Peshawar during the period.

The scattered rain and snowfall over the hills was recorded in different parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and GB during last 24 hours.

The rainfall recorded in Kotli was 24 mm,Sialkot 23 mm, Rawalakot 20 mm, Islamabad 17 mm, Abbotabad 16 mm, Lahore 15 mm, Rawalpindi and Gujrat 14 mm.

However, half feet snowfall was recorded over the hills in Murree and Galiat during last 24 hours.

China, India PMs agree to double trade by 2015

NEW DEHLI: China and India’s premiers agreed Thursday to double bilateral trade to 100 billion dollars by 2015, during talks that otherwise showed no apparent progress on a series of key disputes.

Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh also agreed in a joint communique to push Indian exports to China in an effort to bridge a trade surplus of around 20 billion dollars a year in China’s favour.

The talks came on the second day of Wen’s visit — his first to India in five years — for which he led a delegation of 400 Chinese business leaders.

Trade between the world’s two fastest-growing major economies totalled 42 billion dollars last year and is expected to reach 60 billion dollars in the current fiscal year to March.

Since arriving in India, Wen’s delegation has struck deals worth 16 billion dollars.

MQM calls Rabta Committee meeting to discuss political situation

Govt issues Rs 90.29bn currency notes

The government has issued new currency notes of Rs 90.29 billion in two weeks of November. Value of currency notes being circulated in market has reached Rs 16.53 trillion.

Value of currency notes during the current fiscal year has crossed Rs 2.76 trillion. Talking to trendpk.Com, economist Shahid Siddiqui said that the government issues new currency notes to hide its budget deficit, huge expenses and tax evasion. The government borrows from the State Bank of Pakistan and this step fuels inflation in the country, he added.
