WHO issues guidelines for contested breast implants

PARIS: The World Health Organisation (WHO) intervened for the first time in the roiling global scandal over faulty breast implants, urging women with the devices to seek medical advice if they have any concerns.
“Persons with PIP or M-Implant prostheses should consult their doctor or surgeon if they suspect rupture, have pain or inflammation or any other concerns,” UN’s health agency said, referring to the brands implicated in the controversy.
“Affected persons and physicians should take note of their national health authority recommendations and act accordingly,” it said in a “Global Alert and Response” statement issued on its website.
Around 300,000 women in 65 countries are believed to have received implants made by Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), a now-defunct manufacturer in southern France, although some figures are much higher.
France, Germany and the Czech Republic have recommended that the devices be removed as a precaution but Britain has said it will not follow suit.
The prostheses were withdrawn from the European market in 2010 after France’s health watchdog discovered they were made from sub-standard, industrial-grade gel.
The WHO said data about adverse events from the implants was sketchy and hoped for stronger reporting of episodes in order to get a clearer picture.
“While the rupture rate of PIP prostheses was observed to be higher than expected in France, rates reported by other national authorities vary,” it noted. AGENCIES

U.S. Coach Bob Bradley delivered his first answer to why this World Cup may be different from all others today when he named strikers Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez to the U.S. men’s national team. Those are hardly household names in U.S. soccer: As of Tuesday night, they had three caps between them
But for soccer fans, Buddle and Gomez represent that potentially priceless commodity heading into the world’s biggest sporting event — a hot striker.

Neither was even on the national team radar a year ago. But then striker Charlie Davies suffered near fatal injuries in an October car crash, and Bradley went looking for players who could put the ball in the net.
Showing near perfect timing, Gomez, who plays for Pachuca in the Mexican League, became the first American to lead a foreign league in goals, developing a habit of coming off the bench to score in the second half. Buddle, who hasn’t been a part of the national team in seven years, is the leading scorer in Major League Soccer right now, with nine for the Los Angeles Galaxy. Both caused problems for the Czech Republic in a friendly Tuesday night in Connecticut, with Gomez heading in a corner kick and Buddle assisting on the team’s first goal after drawing the foul that set up the free kick.

They will team with Jozy Altidore and Robbie Findley at the top of the team’s 4-4-2 to form an attack that looks to have a bit of sizzle, a rare quality for a U.S. team more known for its fitness and physicality.
“Plain and simple, Edson and Hercules have had real good stretches, scored a lot of goals,” Bradley said shortly after making the announcement.

Political Blogger Alleges Affair with SC Gubernatorial Candidate Nikki Haley

South Carolina political blogger Will Folks has admitted that he had an affair with Republican candidate for governor Nikki Haley. Folks wrote on his blog Monday that he had an “inappropriate physical relationship” several years ago with Haley, before he was married. Haley, who married her husband Michael in 1996, was recently endorsed by Sarah Palin .
I have been 100 percent faithful to my husband throughout our 13 years of marriage. This claim against me is categorically and totally false. It is quite simply South Carolina politics at its worst.”

Folks said he decided to go public with the affair after being targeted by Haley’s political opponents, who were slowly leaking out the news “while simultaneously forcing either evasive answers or denials on my part or on Nikki’s part.”
“I refuse to play that game,” he wrote. “I refuse to have someone hold the political equivalent of a switch-blade in front of my face and just sit there and watch as they cut me to pieces. The truth in this case is what it is. Several years ago, prior to my marriage, I had an inappropriate physical relationship with Nikki. That’s it.
In recent weeks, however, a group of political operatives has attempted to do just that. In fact, on a very personal level I have become the primary target of a group that will apparently stop at nothing to destroy the one S.C. gubernatorial candidate who, in my opinion, would most consistently advance the ideals I believe in. For those of you unfamiliar with the editorial bent of this website, the candidate I am referring to is S.C. Rep. Nikki Haley.
This network of operatives has made it abundantly clear that in the process of “taking down” Rep. Haley, they will also stop at nothing to humiliate me, destroy my family and take a sizable chunk out of the credibility this website has managed to amass for itself. Such is the blood sport of S.C. politics, I suppose – particularly in the wake of the scandal that consumed my former boss, Gov. Mark Sanford.

mexico vs england

While the 2010 World Cup isn’t officially here yet, it might as well be. Today, we get a very intriguing warm-up contest between England and Mexico at Wembley Stadium, in a match that will definitely catch the eye of U.S. national team supporters. And then the United States will take their game to the pitch tomorrow, as they face the Czech Republic in East Hartford, CT. The U.S. and England will kick off Group C against each other on June 12, and both are looking to pick up victories this week to give them a little momentum heading into the cup.
He explained that he wants flexibility in his players, adding that his style with England has always been a 4-4-2, or a 4-3-1-2 formation with Steven Gerrard as a midfielder free behind the two forwards. In his Roma times Capello played with three centre backs and he has been practicing that. He believes that England can play different styles and that the squad have to prepare for everything.
England reports that the fitness of Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry is a concern, he picked up an ankle injury in the penultimate game of the season against Tottenham.
Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are fully fit and they are both expected to play against Mexico. Other key players include Aaron Lennon of Tottenhum Hotspur and young Gunner Theo Walcott. James Milner is also expected to play. Milner, an Aston Villa player, has enjoyed a wonderful season with the club and he is Manchester United’s target for next season. Top quality striker Wayne Rooney scored more than 25 goals this season for the Red Devils and he is all set to start in front.
