President Obama Daily Show: As we await the airing of Jon Stewart’s interview with President Barack Obama – the first time a sitting President has appeared on The Daily Show and the first time an interview lasted the whole show – here are some notes from an audience member.d8e5ae16edy Show.jpg President Obama Daily Show

• Stewart had to re-tape the opening because the Pres. Obama interview went long.

• Stewart took questions from the audience. He said that every other possible guest was “out campaigning” and Pres. Obama was the “last resort.

• To explain the absence of the usual Daily Show correspondents, Stewart said they were busy working in a soup kitchen.

• Songs played during commercial breaks: Springsteen’s “Born To Run” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.”

3671f89f34267915 usa vs england world cupReporting from Johannesburg, South Africa — When the U.S. played its final home tuneup game in Philadelphia before leaving for the World Cup, a couple of elderly gentlemen were introduced to the players before the start.

Harry Keough, 82, and Walter Bahr, 83, know what lies ahead for the American team Saturday in Rustenburg. They’ve been there, done that.

Keough and Bahr were starters on the U.S. team that scored one of soccer’s all-time upsets, astounding the globe by defeating England, 1-0, at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.

Now, 60 years later, it is England that once again will line up on the opposite side of the halfway line, this time at the 44,000-seat Royal Bafokeng Stadium on what promises to be a chilly but memorable night.

England comes into the tournament as a legitimate contender, a team of experience, strength and potential. The U.S. is a decided underdog, but the pressure is all on England. If the Americans lose, it was to be expected. If the English lose, the consequences are incalculable.England’s stars are known from Broadway to Brighton. Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and John Terry and other Premier League stars are seen even more on U.S. television than they are on British TV.

And top American players such as Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard have become well known in the Premier League, as familiar in the colors of Everton and Fulham as they are in the red, white and blue. usa vs england world cup

While all the buzz may be about Saturday’s game in Rustenberg, U.S. players say are giving equal emphasis to their other two first-round games, against Slovenia on June 18 and vs. Algeria on June 23. The England game is primary only because it comes first.

ebbe9981c29d6 mn jon stewartIt’s getting rough between Jon Stewart and Fox News Channel commentator Bernard Goldberg.

Goldberg told Stewart to “find some guts.” In response, Stewart brought a gospel choir to “The Daily Show” on Tuesday to curse him out.
Last week, Stewart’s show did a segment about how Fox News commentators criticized Tea Party opponents for judging the movement based on the bad actions of a few. Stewart played tape of Fox personalities, including Goldberg, making generalizations about liberals.
Goldberg pleaded guilty. But on Monday’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” he urged Stewart to show guts and be tough on liberal guests.

He said Stewart thinks he’s edgy, but is Jay Leno with a smaller audience who gets to swear.

Responded Stewart: “If you think I’m Leno with an f-bomb, you know less about comedy than you do about politics.”

NEW YORK :  Jon Stewart on Oreilly Video, Comic Jon Stewart told Bill O’Reilly that the “no spin zone” ringleader had become the voice of sanity, although “that’s like being the thinnest kid at fat camp.”

The host of “The Daily Show” and Fox’s kingpin exchanged some good-natured shots Wednesday during Stewart’s appearance on a network he relishes mocking. Stewart tossed off jokes but also criticized Fox for being a “cyclonic perpetual motion machine” opposing President Barack Obama.

“They have taken reasonable concerns about this president and this economy and turned it into a full-fledged panic attack about the next coming of Chairman Mao,” Stewart said.

O’Reilly said the Obama attacks were primarily coming from Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck, who have two of the highest-rated programs on Fox. O’Reilly called Beck an “everyman.”

“He just spouts,” O’Reilly said. “He spouts for what he believes. If you think Beck spouts for the Republican Party, you’re out of your mind.”

Fox cut off the taped interview at that point, saying more would be shown Thursday.
