The detectives probing the murder of Pakistan politician Dr Imran Farooq are looking for at least two killers.
Dr Farooq, 50, was a leading member of Pakistan’s Muttahida Quami Movement party and fled to the UK in 1999, claiming asylum. He was stabbed repeatedly before being bludgeoned over the head with bricks in North London.
Officers from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command have taken on the murder case due to a possible political motive. The last murder which the unit investigated was the poisoning in 2006 of Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko.
Dr Farooq had previously claimed that there was a bounty on his head and he was wanted dead or alive by Pakistani authorities for criminal and terrorist activities. He insisted that the charges were politically motivated.

The military said Ameerullah Mehsud was one of the top commanders in the Pakistani Taliban.

He also went by the alias of Qari Gud, which means “the man who limps”, and Mazloomyar, which means “friend of the oppressed” in the Pashtu language.

Mehsud was reportedly shot dead at a checkpoint in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan.

“His head money was 20 million rupees (234,000 dollars). Two soldiers were also wounded in the shootout,” the military said in a statement. The gunbattle took place in Miranshah on Sunday, it added.

Turkey, Iran and Brazil agree on fuel swap deal

Turkey’s Foreign Minister said on Sunday that an agreement had been reached between Iran, Turkey and Brazil over procedures to revive a stalled UN backed nuclear fuel swap deal.
Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Iran for a summit of non-aligned countries, also held talks on the nuclear issue with Iran’s leadership Sunday. Turkey’s foreign ministry said a formal announcement might be made on Monday after any final revisions by the Brazilian and Iranian presidents and the Turkish prime minister. Iran later said it would only swap its LEU for higher grade material and only on its own soil, conditions other parties in the deal said were unacceptable. It denies seeking to build an atomic bomb. Turkey and Brazil, both non-permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, have offered to mediate to find a resolution to the impasse at a time when world powers are in talks to impose a fourth round of U.N. sanctions on Iran. The Brazilian and Turkish leaders have been trying to revive a deal reached last October in which Iran would ship much of its stockpile of enriched uranium abroad for further processing; the uranium would then return as fuel rods for a medical research reactor. Mr. Erdogan suggested to reporters in Turkey before leaving for Iran that the uranium swap could take place in Turkey.

Al Qaeda threatens attacks if harm comes to US cleric

Al Qaeda’s regional wing in Yemen has threatened the United States with more attacks should any harm come to a US born radical cleric wanted dead or alive by Washington, according to an audio tape posted online on Sunday.
US officials said in April President Barack Obama’s administration had authorised operations to capture or kill Yemen-based Anwar al-Awlaki, a leading figure linked to al Qaeda’s Yemen wing, which claimed responsibility for a failed bombing of a Detroit-bound plane in December. That was a failure but tell me, what will success be like, the wing’s leader Nasser al-Wahayshi said in an audio recording which appeared on websites often used by Islamic militants. It will inevitably be a disaster for you (Americans), for we are enamoured with the attacks of September 11, he said. Obama, tell your people and do not hide from them the size of the danger that constantly awaits you. Divulge to them the result of the investigations on the cells and the ongoing plans and the targets of the Mujahideen, said Wahayshi, who was once a close associate of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The threats of the United States do not frighten us, Muslims, do not worry about the sheikh (Awlaki), he is in safe hands, Wahayshi said.

Musharraf, who is on a lecture tour of the US currently, told students and delegates at a college in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, that both Pakistani and US intelligence have failed to collect any details regarding Laden’s whereabouts, and now they are even unable to ascertain whether he was dead or alive.

Musharraf also said there is a need of a multifaceted strategy to deal with the Taliban effectively.

He said that while the al Qaeda should be eliminated from Pakistan by force, dealing with the Taliban would require a military, political and socio-economic approach.

The former general underlined the fact that the Taliban was a widespread organization with no central command.

“The Taliban is not a monolith, but rather a spread out organization with no single commander who could be removed for the command structure to be destroyed,” he said.
