Suu Kyi continues election-campaign trip

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi hit the campaign trail near her hometown of Yangon on Saturday, travelling to the constituency where she is standing for parliament for the first time.

The democracy icon has already made two campaign trips outside the city ahead of April s by-elections, but this is her first day taking to the streets of the rural township of Kawhmu, where she is contesting the vote.

Hundreds of cheering supporters lined the roads as her convoy left Yangon, waving flags of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party and photos of Suu Kyi and her father, Myanmar s independence hero Aung San.

The NLD cannot threaten the army-backed party s ruling majority even if it wins all of the 48 available seats, but the vote has important symbolic value as the first time Suu Kyi has been able to directly participate in a Myanmar election.

“I hope they will be free and fair. There have been a few hitches but I hope that these will be sorted out,” she told AFP on Friday.

A widely-expected win for Suu Kyi would lend strong legitimacy to the country s parliament, which first convened early last year and is dominated by former generals who kept her in detention for much of the past two decades.

The NLD won a landslide victory in an election in 1990, but the then-ruling junta never allowed the party to take power. Suu Kyi was a figurehead for the party s campaign despite being under house arrest at the time.

She was released from her latest stint in detention a few days after a much-criticised election in 2010, and the upcoming polls are being held to fill places vacated by those who have since become government ministers and deputy ministers.

Ahead of the campaign day, Suu Kyi insisted her party — which boycotted the 2010 election — was taking nothing for granted.

“We will work very hard to win all 48 seats. It s not a matter of expectations, it s a matter of hard work,” the Nobel Peace Prize winner said.

Controversy surrounding the 2010 vote means the by-elections will be heavily scrutinised.

But the new regime has impressed even sceptics with its reform process, which has included welcoming the NLD back into the political mainstream and signing ceasefire deals with ethnic minority rebels.

The release of hundreds of political prisoners has been particularly welcomed by Western powers — which imposed strict sanctions on Myanmar — leading the United States to begin restoring full diplomatic relations.

On Monday, Washington also announced a waiver to allow it to support assessments in the country by international financial institutions including the World Bank.

Despite Myanmar s progress, the brief detention of a leading dissident monk on Friday sparked concern among observers, coming less than a month after his release from a jail term imposed for his role in a 2007 anti-junta uprising.

No watershed on 20th Amend yet: Nisar

The Opposition Leader in the National Assembly said that no progress has been made on the 20th Amendment, which deals with the issue of creating new provinces. He also said that the PML-N’s stance remains unchanged. “The caretaker government should be formed in consultation with the Opposition, after evolving national consensus,” he added.

Talking to the media, Ch Nisar said neither has any progress been made so far on the issue of caretaker government. He said his party wants a consensus caretaker prime minister to ensure free and fair general elections.

The Opposition Leader also came down on the government, saying the government only informs the opposition after taking policy decisions. “We also have reservations on the word consultation. All opposition parties have reservations.”.

Nisar however said watershed on the 20th Amend is possible on Wednesday. He said the next elections must be free and fair.
On the suspension of 28 MPs on orders from the Supreme Court, Nisar said not those politicians, but the Election Committee is to blame. He said the Chief Election Commissioner’s tenure cannot be extended under the Constitution.

Greece, IMF expect debt deals soon

Greece and the IMF said Wednesday that negotiations for landmark debt deals will be concluded in a “matter of days,” raising hopes that the country will dodge a disastrous default in the spring.

Greece is locked in two sets of talks one with private creditors to have them take losses on their bondholdings and the other with its international bailout rescuers to receive new loans.

“We are at a crucial point in developments. In the coming days, the agreements must be completed” for the bond swap and a second 130 billion euro ($171 billion) bailout package, government spokesman Pantelis Kapsis said.

Debt inspectors from the European Commission, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, known as the troika, are in Athens for talks on the second rescue package, which is tied to an agreement with private creditors to accept losses on Greek bonds they hold. The success of the bond deal, however, also depends on the outcome of the bailout talks.

The bond swap, known as the Private Sector Involvement, or PSI, will see private creditors swap the bonds they hold with new ones worth half their original face value, longer repayment times and lower interest rates. They will also get a 30 billion euro cash sweetener to be taken from the 130 billion euro bailout for accepting the deal. Once secured, the PSI will cut 100 billion euro off Greece s national debt.

Overall, the investors participating in the deal will face a loss on their bondholdings of more than 70 percent, Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said in a Parliament committee meeting Tuesday night. The official offering of the new bonds will come by Feb. 13, Venizelos said.

Greece is running out of time, as it faces a 14.5 billion euros bond redemption on March 20 that it cannot afford to pay without additional help. A default would spell disaster for the country and destabilize European and global markets.

Both deals will need the agreement of the heads of the three political parties in Greece s interim coalition, Kapsis said, and Prime Minister Lucas Papademos was to call the party heads to a meeting to sign off on them and required austerity measures.

Chief IMF inspector Poul Thomsen also said a deal was close, but pressed the recession-plagued country to lower employment costs and even slash the minimum wage to make the economy more competitive.

“It s a matter of days,” Thomsen was quoted as saying by the Athens daily Kathimerini. “The discussions for the (new) program will be concluded very soon.”

Thomsen insisted wages in Greece remain too high and urged the government to consider cutting the minimum wage of 750 euro ($988) gross pay per month.

Both of this popular bargain hunting message boards let users post and then rank each other’s deals. WiredDeals scans the listings and finds which ones are getting the most points or “reps,” as they are called. I usually just skim down the “Hot Deals” section and see if any items have any particularly large bar graphs, then click on the popout arrow on the far right to check out the original forum thread and see if the deal is still functional and good. The site also has a robust search feature, RSS feeds, and you can set up alerts if you’re waiting for a price drop on a specific product. If you findSlickDeals and FatWallet a bit tedious to navigate sometimes, WiredDeals gives a nice snapshot of what’s hot.
