Russian company announces to launch space hotel
A Russian company has announced plans to launch a comfortable space hotel for tourists who up to now have shared cramped accommodation with astronauts.
The company, Orbital Technologies plans to launch the first module of the hotel in 2015-16, its chief executive Sergei Kostenko told at a presentation. A cosy fit, the first module will measure just 20 cubic metres (706 cubic feet) and have four cabins, designed for up to seven passengers, who would go into orbit using the Soyuz shuttle, Kostenko said.
Up to now space tourists, who have included the Canadian founder of the Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberte, have squeezed into the International Space Station (ISS) along with cosmonauts and animal life including fruit flies.
The new hotel will offer more comforts than the ISS, Kostenko said. Our planned module inside will not remind you of the ISS. A hotel should be comfortable inside, and it will be possible to look at the Earth through large portholes, Kostenko said, calling it a cosmic hotel. The space hotel will be aimed at wealthy individuals and people working for private companies who want to do research in space, Kostenko said.
The space tourism program was halted earlier this year as the crew numbers on the ISS increased, leaving no room for extra passengers. Kostenko said that the project has found Russian and American investors, and we are talking about hundreds of millions of dollars, without elaborating. At the moment, the project is already at the design stage, he said.
The space hotel would be built by Russian spacecraft manufacturer Energia, the company’s website said. It would follow the same orbit as the ISS.
Kostenko told that a number of agreements on partnership have already been signed with Energia and the Russian space agency.
The company’s website cites the deputy head of Russian space agency Roskosmos, Vitaly Davydov, as saying that the suggested project is extremely interesting.

Mani Ratnam to be honoured at the 67th Venice International Film Festival

Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam is all set to be bestowed with the Jaeger-LeCoultre ‘Glory to the Filmmaker’ award at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. In recent years, the award has gone to other major world filmmakers such as Takeshi Kitano, Abbas Kiarostami, Agnes Varda, and Sylvester Stallone. This year however, Swiss watch manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrates its six years of partnership with the Venice International Film Festival by announcing Jaeger-LeCoultre ‘Glory to the Filmmaker’ award.
Speaking on why they chose Mani Ratnam for this honour, Marco Mueller, Venice Film Festival director says, “Mani Ratnam used to initially make movies only in his native tongue, Tamil, but has now been one of a handful of filmmakers to successfully handle the transition to the All-India market. One of the great innovators in contemporary Indian cinema, he helped introduce the auteur concept to contemporary Bollywood. His movies display precision and poise, and have always been removed from the bombast and bluster of mass-produced regional cinema. The lavish musical numbers in his films, some of the best-tailored in Mumbai and Madras in recent years, have influenced the style of many others (as well as the design of commercials and music videos). Ratnam’s most celebrated films have become part of the cinematic imagination of the sub-continent.”
On the occasion of the award ceremony, the Mostra will present the festival premiere of Mani Ratnam’s much-anticipated forthcoming film Raavan, attended by the director and by its cast and crew including Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, and music maestro A.R. Rahman. Raavan is produced by Madras Talkies in association with Reliance Big Pictures and distributed internationally by Reliance Big Pictures and IM Global.
“Raavan will enchant audiences with its stirring drama and entrancing musical sequences,” says Marco Mueller. “We are proud to be hosting the festival premiere of this wonderful film, which will be presented at the 2010 Mostra in both the Hindi and the Tamil versions.”
As in previous editions, together with the award the director will be presented with a Reverso Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, a one-of-a-kind model with a commemorative engraving.

The call from the Eagles the lead, having passed the phone from general manager to scout for his position every coach to congratulate him was enough to clinch agreement. These are the specific phrases Lloyd Carr and Rich Rodriguez heard every day in Michigan, those who gave Graham the relentless power and explosive ability to reach this point.
