100 designers who shaped fashion
NEW YORK: From Adolfo to Yohji Yamamoto, Women”s Wear Daily has recorded the A to Z of fashion over the last 100 years. There are the suffragettes, flappers, career women in pantsuits and, later, miniskirts.
Fashion is an industry that”s always on the hunt for the next big thing. Yet, in researching a new book about a century of style, “WWD 100 Years, 100 Designers,” executive editor Bridget Foley found some constants.
“So many designers, when they talk about their work talk about women first,” Foley says. “There”s an ongoing idea and a belief among the very best designers that you have to push forward, but also that you also always have to consider what women will wear.”
For all the declarations of trends, including hemlines, silhouettes and embellishments, Foley finds that most garments – be they skinny jeans or pencil skirts – are consistently available year after year, even when they”re not winning headlines.
And, she adds, however modern and urban we like to think black is, women have been wearing it – regularly – since the 1920s.
The power of buzz has been around even longer.
Some of the designers included in the book were chosen because they literally changed the shape of fashion: Paul Poiret, Claire McCardell and Christian Dior, among them. But someone such as Gabrielle Chanel (known, of course, as Coco) really created an entire culture around a brand.
A 1965 WWD quote about Chanel: “Chanel is more than a look – it”s an institution – it”s a belief and a way of life – which this clever and very crafty artiste has done. She knows that her ever hungry Fashion Barbies are women and girls who eat and drink and dance – and love.”
Winnowing down this list of most influential designers to 100 was harder than it sounds, especially balancing new talent like Jason Wu against Dior and Oscar de la Renta, Foley says.
“Is this all good fashion?” she wonders. “I’m not sure it’s all good fashion, but it”s all representative fashion, and much of it is really good.”
Others who made the cut: Giorgio Armani, Cristobal Balenciaga, Andre Courreges, Francisco Costa, Calvin Klein, Charles James, Norma Kamali, Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte, Donna Karan, Madeline Vionnet, and both Gianni and Donatella Versace.
Windows phone 7 updates

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Monday announced the release of a new version of its smartphone operating system, Windows Phone 7 Series.

Device makers have already started developing phones using the new software, with the first ones set to become available in the second half of 2010, the U.S. software company said.
This version of its mobile operating system will have a newly designed homescreen and elements from Microsoft’s Zune HD music player and Xbox console. The Office software has been redesigned as well, and Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, is also integrated into the system.
Windows Phone 7 Series replaces Windows Mobile 6.5. Despite being used by handset makers such as HTC Corp. (2498.TW), Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (005930.SE), LG Corp. (003550.SE) and Sony Ericsson, the new operating system’s predecessor is only ranked fourth in the smartphone market, according to research conducted by U.S. firm Gartner.
The gap in the market between Windows Mobile and the three leading systems–Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone, Symbian and Android–could also grow in coming years, according to Gartner, which predicts Windows Mobile could fall to fifth place by 2013.
“The primary goal of Windows Mobile 7 is clearly to address Microsoft’s shortcomings in the consumer mobile market. All plaudits for their persistence aside, in my view this is their final chance to get it right,” Charles Golvin of Forrester Research said.

Windows Phone 7, Forget everything you know about Windows Mobile.
Seriously, throw the whole OS concept in a garbage bin or incinerator or something. Microsoft has done what would have been unthinkable for the company just a few years ago: started from scratch. At least, that’s how things look (and feel) with Windows Phone 7 Series. This really is a completely new OS — and not just Microsoft’s new OS, it’s a new smartphone OS, like webOS new, like iPhone OS new. You haven’t used an interface like this before (well, okay, if you’ve used a Zune HD then you’ve kind of used an interface like this). Still, 7 Series goes wider and deeper than the Zune by a longshot, and it’s got some pretty intense ideas about how you’re supposed to be interacting with a mobile device. We had a chance to go hands-on with the dev phone before today’s announcement, and hear from some of the people behind the devices, and here’s our takeaway. (And don’t worry, we’ve got loads of pictures and video coming, so keep checking this post for the freshest updates).
First the look and feel. The phones are really secondary here, and we want to focus on the interface. The design and layout of 7 Series’ UI (internally called Metro) is really quite original, utilizing what one of the designers (Albert Shum, formerly of Nike) calls an “authentically digital” and “chromeless” experience. What does that mean? Well we can tell you what it doesn’t mean — no shaded icons, no faux 3D or drop shadows, no busy backgrounds (no backgrounds at all), and very little visual flair besides clean typography and transition animations. The whole look is strangely reminiscent of a terminal display (maybe Microsoft is recalling its DOS roots here) — almost Tron-like in its primary color simplicity. To us, it’s rather exciting. This OS looks nothing like anything else on the market, and we think that’s to its advantage. Admittedly, we could stand for a little more information available within single views, and we have yet to see how the phone will handle things like notifications, but the design of the interface is definitely in a class of its own.

Project Runway Season 6 Episode 2

Last night saw the second episode of “Project Runway,” which is the popular reality show that centers around the fashion design business, air on Lifetime and the remaining 15 designers, had a bit of a twist to their challenge that was set.
the designers not only had to design a dress for a celebrity, but it would be a dress for a pregnant celebrity. And the celebrity in question was their guest judge, actress Rebecca Romijn, who stars in “Ugly Betty.”
The designers then got to work on their dresses and apparently, when Tim dropped in on them early on day 2, he didn’t seem too impressed with the outfits they had started. Then it came to day 3 and the good old Runway show.
This was to determine who the better designers were and who would be going home. And it looked like there were some good outfits and some hideous ones. The judges didn’t like Malvin’s or Ra’mon’s, but it was Malvin that was sent home.
