Tiny horse trains as guide for blind Muslim woman

DEARBORN: Mona Ramouni seems more nervous than Cali as they ride the rattling bus to work for the first time.

“You’re a good girl, you’re OK, you’re OK,” Ramouni says softly, stroking Cali, a 3-year-old former show horse that stands about 2 1/2 feet tall, weighs about 125 pounds and has trained since November to become Ramouni’s guide.

Ramouni lost her sight to retinopathy of prematurity shortly after birth. She relies on her family to guide her around the Detroit suburbs where she’s lived, studied and worked for all of her 28 years.

She wants more independence, but a traditional guide dog isn’t an option. Many Muslims consider dogs unclean, and Ramouni, an observant Sunni, respects her Jordanian-born parents’ aversion to having a dog in the home where she lives along with three of her six siblings.

The answer, she hopes, is Cali, short for Mexicali

4cbf89c620539w seligWho knew that Bud Selig had the power to reverse the egregious call that ruined the perfect game for Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga?

Happily, by doing nothing, Bud did the right thing.

Requests for Selig to overturn umpire Jim Joyce’s call and bestow on Galarraga what he had earned came from scribes, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, the Internet mob… even the White House.

The appeals were silly, a case of heart overruling head.

They were unnecessary, too, because the principals involved in this unusual drama quickly and gracefully turned a baseball injustice into a poignant pageant of heartfelt regret, understanding and sportsmanship. Their generosity of spirit makes this story even bigger than a perfect game.

Joyce and Galarraga, as well as Tigers manager Jim Leyland and the rest of his club, handled their displeasure and frustration like adults.

Joyce distinguished himself by confessing that he blew the call. Tears in his eyes, he apologized to a

gracious Galarraga. Thursday afternoon, the umpire took the field in Detroit while shedding more tears.

Does that take him off the hook? Not at all. But fans who are always going on about the importance of the “human element” in baseball should be the first to applaud a genuine demonstration of humanity and humility from an unlikely source.Galarraga, Joyce and Detroit Tigers fans all exhibited remarkable sportsmanship considering the circumstances. …

Galarraga, believe it or not, was the 10th pitcher to lose a perfect game with two out in the ninth inning. …

36de13e360arraga1 galarragaArmando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game Wednesday night with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded Jason Donald’s grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga covering the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe.

The veteran ump regretted it.

“I just cost that kid a perfect game,” Joyce said. “I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay.”

“It was the biggest call of my career,” said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989. According to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, Joyce apologized to the Tigers after the game.

It was a dark moment for umpiring, and one that will spark debate for instant replay on close calls at bases. Now, only border calls on home runs can be replayed. It cost Galarraga a defining moment.

Galarraga, 28, had been saved by a spectacular catch by center fielder Austin Jackson, who robbed Mark Grudzielanek of extra bases to lead off the ninth. After Indians catcher Mike Redmond grounded out, Donald came up. The 17,738 on hand were on their feet applauding. After the call, there was almost stunned silence. Galarraga remained composed and retired Trevor Crowe to preserve the one-hitter in a 3-0 victory.

The Yankees trailed 9-7 in the ninth but erased the deficit when Alex Rodriguez belted a game-tying two-run homer off closer Jonathan Papelbon, who blew the save by allowing all four runs in the final inning.

Thames, playing in place of injured outfielder Nick Swisher, finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs while Rodriguez also had four RBIs for New York who have defeated the Red Sox five times in seven games this season.

“I’ve always known what this rivalry was about, and being a part of it now, hopefully I can continue to be a part of it,” Thames told reporters having joined the Yankees this season after playing with the Detroit Tigers since 2004. “This feels great.”

The Yankees (25-13) stormed to a 5-0 lead in the first but Boston clawed back and went ahead 8-7 on Kevin Youkilis’ two-run blast in the eighth.

Victor Martinez added the second of his two solo homers in the eighth for the Red Sox (19-20) who hit five home runs.

In what was billed as a pitching showdown between New York right-hander Phil Hughes (5-0) and Japan’s Daisuke Matsuzaka, neither performed at their best.

Matsuzaka lasted 4 2/3 innings while allowing seven runs, while Hughes, who entered the game with the lowest ERA of any starter in baseball, surrendered a homer to David Ortiz in the fourth and a three-run blast to J.D. Drew in the fifth.

Hughes exited after the fifth before New York reliever Park Chan-ho was battered during Boston’s rally in the eighth.

In the ninth, Brett Gardner led off with a double for one of his two hits and after Rodriguez’s game-tying hit, Francisco Cervelli was hit by a pitch to clear the way for Thames launched the fast ball over the left-field wall to end the game.

b93d38f858138042 johan franzenDETROIT – Johan Franzen doubled his previous playoff scoring total in one game.

Perfect timing for the Detroit Red Wings.

Franzen had a natural hat trick in a 3:26 span of the first period, scored a fourth goal in the third, and set a team playoff record with six points as Detroit stayed alive with a 7-1 rout of the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals. “Hopefully, I can get some confidence and the team can get some confidence,” Franzen said. “I’ve been struggling on the goal-scoring side.”f82223b06a4262 johan franzen

Franzen had just two goals in the first 10 playoff games. The burly forward known as “Mule” scored 25 times the previous two postseasons for the two-time defending Western Conference champions.

“Mule is one of those guys — like (Joe) Pavelski — when you get hot, you just shoot the puck,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.

San Jose will host Game 5 on Saturday night with another chance to advance to hockey’s final four for the second time in franchise history and first since 2004.

“Maybe this spanking will wake us up to know we’re not out of the woods,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. “I’m saying it. We have to respond to it.”

Franzen was originally credited with scoring the first goal 5:40 in, but the goal was changed to Todd Bertuzzi. That prevented Franzen from tying the NHL playoff record with four goals in a period.

Valtteri Filppula put Detroit ahead 5-0 late in the first period on a shot that went off San Jose defenseman Douglas Murray and effectively ended goalie Evgeni Nabokov’s night.

Nabokov made just four saves in the first period and was replaced by Thomas Greiss, who let the second shot he faced get past him off Brian Rafalski’s one-timer.

Detroit scored six straight goals in the first 23:05 of the game, a flurry of unanswered goals in the second-fastest stretch to start an NHL playoff game. Montreal scored six 21:19 into a 1954 playoff game before Boston had a goal.

“We weren’t ready to play this game,” Nabokov said. “We need to get that desperation in our game.”

Dany Heatley scored for San Jose on a 5-on-3 power play with 48.5 seconds left in the second period to make it 6-1.
