Move of 2010 NFL draft to prime time on ESPN won’t go down as one of Roger Good Going into the first round of Thursday night’s NFL draft, there was much talk about the viewing audience, comprised mostly of draftniks, having new company.

The thinking – perhaps wishful – was that the hard core would be joined by millions of eyeballs suddenly exiting “Survivor” or “CSI” to see a bunch of drooling Jets fans, sitting on the edge of their seats at Radio City, waiting to see if Mike Tannenbaum brings in another miscreant to join Gang Gone Wild.9c0b9fc2c2espn espn

This had to be fact. After all, if the NFL decides it’s good for the league and ESPN to move the first round to prime time, and drag this thing out over two more days, it has to be good for business. NFL suits are never wrong, right?

This was just another night of the NFL polishing its brand. Someone thinks the NFL draft is now too big for Saturday afternoon. It must have glitz. It must step out with other star prime-time attractions. Baloney. You can believe the ratings hype. We ain’t.

Last night, if Roger Goodell & Co. were really looking to, as the commish said, “expose the draft to a broader audience,” they would have lowered Ben Roethlisberger from the ornate Radio City ceiling (like Bowie did when he was playing Ziggy Stardust) and had him offer some sort of tearful apology on ESPN between the second and third picks.

Now that’s showbiz. It would have been great TV. The kind of stuff that would have moved Molly to abandon “The Mentalist” on CBS or Carl to bolt Cavs-Bulls on TNT.

Get it? Chances are there were no major viewer defections. No folks clamoring to watch Chris Berman fill time between Goodell’s podium appearances or waiting to see if a small plane really can land on Mel Kiper Jr.’s head.

In the days leading up to the first pick, there was much gas-bagging about the NFL draft becoming a prime-time event. That’s the way the league pushed it through its designated media lackeys, most of whom cash ESPN paychecks. And that’s the way ESPN positioned it through its multiple platforms.

Cal running back Jahvid Best was taken by the Detroit Lions with the 30th pick in the N.F.L. draft. Here’s a look at how the Bears will be affected by his departure.Fleming figured Best’s last shot at being a first-round pick Thursday night would come with the Jets at No. 29 overall. When the Jets passed on Best, taking Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson, Fleming figured he would have to wait until the second round tonight.

Then the phone rang with the Vikings scheduled to pick at No. 30.

“They were like, ‘It’s the Lions,’ ” Best said. “And I was like, ‘Why are the Lions calling me when it’s not their turn?’ And then they told me they were going to trade, so I just got really excited. I was just so excited. I can’t even have words for this moment right

b07b11346ddskins mcnabb redskins he trade of Donovan McNabb from the Eagles to the Redskins is bad for Sam Bradford, bad for the Detroit Lions and could be either good or bad for the St. Louis Rams — depending on whether they’re willing to spend No. 1-pick money to secure Bradford.

The deal gives the Redskins some flexibility at the No. 4 spot in the first round and has little if any impact on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are picking No. 3. And it’s hard to say for sure what it means for Jimmy Clausen.

With only two and a half weeks left before the NFL Draft, this is a deal that has shaken things up at the top of the first round. Here’s a look at how the McNabb deal impacts the way things will unfold when the draft gets underway on Thursday night, April 22.t hurts Bradford’s leverage. Bradford can talk all he wants about how he likes the Rams just fine and is willing to play for anybody who picks him. But the fact is that there are people around Bradford who wanted him in Washington, playing for Mike Shanahan. And at the very least, having the deep-pocket Redskins interested was helping Bradford as he negotiated a potential deal with the Rams — Bradford is looking to get a larger contract than last year’s No. 1 pick, Matthew Stafford, got from the Lions. And until Sunday night, Bradford had the ability to tell the Rams that, if they wouldn’t pay him, he knew for sure Washington would, and encourage a trade between St. Louis and Washington. The Bradford camp can now try to use the Seahawks in the same way. And it could work, since Seattle likely would jump at a chance to get Bradford. But the Seahawks aren’t picking until No. 6, and that may be farther than the Rams want to move down.
