In 2009, 2.6 million people contracted the HIV virus that causes AIDS, a decline of 19 percent over the 3.1 million recorded in 2001, said UNAIDS, the UN agency spearheading the international campaign against the disease.

About half of the 60 million people who caught HIV/AIDS since the start of the pandemic 30 years ago have died, added the agency.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe urged caution over the growing impact of prevention measures and medical treatment highlighted in the 2010 global report on the AIDS epidemic.

Brain cancer is one of the most dreaded disease and people remain always eager to find out ways as to how the disease can be resisted. Now your cup of morning tea or coffee can lift your spirits as well as fight against the risk of brain cancer.

According to researchers, people who drink half a cup of coffee each day have a lesser chance of getting brain cancer by 34%. Actually so, caffeine present in coffee checks the growth of tumors by restricting the blood flow to the brain. This was found out in previous researches but now the researchers have gone a step ahead to show us newer ways to prevent the disease.

The study was published in the November issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study reveals that daily dose of these two beverages lowers the risk of glioma. Glioma is the cancer of the central nervous system that starts in the brain or spine. It accounts for the 80% of brain cancer in adults and about 50 percent survive for one year after diagnosis and 25 percent after two years.

Malaria can be exterminated in 10 to 15 years: Scientists

Malaria, the disease that causes the deaths of approximately 1.2 million people around the globe every year, could be erased in the next 10 o 15 years.
Scientists have examined the Malaria causing parasite Plasmodium falciparum over five years and found out that it is likely to vanish within the next decade and a half, as long as transmission rates can significantly be reduced. If 90% of transmission cases would decrease, the organism would possibly become extinct. Malaria gets mostly transmitted by mosquitoes and 90% of Malaria deaths occur on the African continent. That is why it is least likely for countries like Angola, Chad or Somalia to fight the disease, as poverty rates and unstable governing already represent tough challenges for its population.
