Rice prices go up in Karachi

KARACHI: Prices of various kinds of rice have been raised to Rs. 10 per kilogram (kg.) in wholesale markets, SAMAA learnt Monday.

The price of Irri-6 has been raised by two rupees. The new price of Super Basmati reached Rs. 72 per kg. after an increase of Rs. 7 per kg. while the Local-86 rice went up by Rs. 10 per kg.

According to the Director Export Division Mian Akbar, the recent rice price hike is due to a decrease in production and the recent floods. SAMAA

Promotions of 54 officers into Grade-22 declared null and void

Establishment Division has informed the Supreme Court about declaring null and void the promotion of 54 officers from Grade 21 to 22.
These appointments were made on September 4, 2009, however, the Establishment Division had declared them null and void from April 29 after the verdict of the Supreme Court. But all the appointments have been declared null and void from the starting date of September 4, 2009. Establishment Division has informed the Supreme Court in this regard through a letter. The affected of the decision would be Sindh Chief Secretary Kamran Lashari, Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan, and Principal Secretary of the PM Nargis Sethi, Secretary Interior Ch. Qamar Zaman and Secretary Information Suhail Mansoor.

Yash Raj Films to launch youth films division

After venturing into the TV space last year, Yash Raj Films, one of the country’s top production houses is all set to launch a new films division that would specifically target the youth. The division which is apparently called Yash Raj Youth will work towards promoting new, young and fresh talent.

Most of the actors, directors, script-writers who will be working for this division will be youngsters. Commenting on this, Rafiq Gangjee, VP- Marketing and Communications YRF said, “Yes…we are launching a new youth films division. However, we will sign new talent on the basis of the requirement of the script and characters, not necessarily limited to the 16-22 age groups.”

”King” Khan wants to conquer division as Muslim champion

NEW YORK: Britain”s WBA super lightweight champion Amir “King” Khan made a smashing US debut at Madison Square Garden, pummelling local favourite Paulie Malignaggi before immediately switching his sights to bigger things.

Having stopped former champion Malignaggi in the 11th round on Saturday to retain his crown, Khan said he wanted to reign supreme in the 140-pound division and give Muslims something to cheer about in boxing.

“I have made my debut here, I know how it feels,” said Khan, whose dismantling of New York”s Malignaggi was his first bout outside of Britain. “It”s the best feeling fighting in America. It”s a dream come true.

“I”d love to fight in Vegas now and have a big fight there.”

Golden Boy Promotions chief Richard Schaefer said plans were to have Khan return home for a bout in July before coming back for another US fight in late autumn.

Khan had a game plan in mind.

“I”d like to fight (Marcos) Maidana next,” the 23-year-old Khan said about the hard-hitting Argentine.

“Let (Devon) Alexander fight Tim Bradley,” he said of the Americans who hold the WBC, WBO and IBF titles. “And the winners fight just to prove who”s best in the division.

“I”m not leaving 140 pounds until I unify the title. Until I”m number one I”m not going to leave this division.”

Khan outclassed the quick Malignaggi in front of 4,500 fight fans, beating the Brooklynite at his own game.

SUPERIOR POWER

He used his speed to beat the challenger to the punch and his superior power helped him win every round of the judges” scorecards before the referee stepped in and halted the bout.

Khan overcame some hiccups in his preparation, including the relocation of his training camp to Vancouver after he had difficulty as a Briton of Pakistani descent securing a US visa.

“I know a lot of the Pakistani people and Muslims get a bad name in the States with the bombings and terrorism and stuff but not all of us are like that,” Khan told reporters.

“I want to get the Muslim community into boxing like I did in England where you see Asians, Chinese, Pakistanis come out to watch me. I want to do the same in the United States. I think I”ve got the power to do that.

“I want to fill stadiums and arenas like I do in the UK.”

Promoter Schaefer said the sky was the limit for Khan.

“They say that first impressions are always the most important,” Schaefer told Reuters after Khan”s title defence.

Tonight he did not just win a fight, he won an audience with the American public.

“With his charisma and personality he has an opportunity to become an ambassador for the sport and in a way unite people with his fists as odd as that might sound.”

Consensus Over 7th NFC Award Reached

LAHORE, Pakistan News : The four provinces have reached a consensus on the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) Award here on Friday.

The decision was made at a meeting attended by chief ministers of the four provinces. The issue of NFC Award had been lingering on for 19 years which has now been resolved with unanimity and an accommodating approach of the provinces.

However, the federation has made historic sacrifices over the division of national resources among the provinces.
