US drone strike kills 20 militants in Pakistan

WAZIRISTAN: At least 20 militants were killed in a US drone strike on an insurgent training centre in Pakistan’s tribal area near the Afghan border early Tuesday, security officials said.

The strike hit targets in Ghulam Khan village on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, some 15 kilometres north of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district.

“At least 15 militants were killed when US drones fired six missiles on a militant compound and a vehicle,” a senior security official told AFP, raising the death toll from eight.

“Militants were using the compound as a training facility,” the official said.

A local intelligence official and another security official in Peshawar confirmed the drone attack and toll.

“Two drones fired four missiles and destroyed the house. 10 militants were killed in this attack,” a security official said.

Two intelligence officials in Miranshah also confirmed the attack and the death toll.

“All of them were militants attached to the Haqqani group,” one intelligence official said.

Al-Qaeda’s operational chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan has been killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan’s lawless tribal border areas, Pakistani security officials said Tuesday.
Sheikh Fateh had reportedly been given the job in May after Al-Qaeda’s purported number three and Osama bin Laden’s one-time treasurer Mustafa Abu al-Yazid was killed.
Pakistani security officials said the Egyptian was killed on Saturday in a US drone strike on North Waziristan, a hub of Al-Qaeda and Taliban commanders where the covert American missile war has been concentrated.

WANA: A drone strike killed four militants in South Waziristan tribal region on Tuesday.

Unmanned US aircraft have significantly stepped up attacks on Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked operatives in the semi-autonomous region this month, recording at least 21 attacks in September.

Tuesday’s strike took place in Zeba village close to the Afghan border and west of Wana, the main town in South Waziristan.

Second drone attack in 10-hours, 15 killed

A second US drone strike in a span of 10-hours in North Waziristan, so far at least 15 suspected militants have been killed in both the attacks.
At least ten militants were killed in the first attack. Sources said that the unmanned aircraft fired three missiles at a suspected militant hideout in Showal, some 55 kilometers from Pak-afghan border, which killed around ten militants.
It is pertinent to mention here that the recent attack is the 11th strike targeting the lawless Afghan border area in as many days.

According to official sources, two missiles were fired on a compound due to which five suspected militants were killed. The number of causalities may rise. Fear and panic gripped the area following the attack.
Residents said five bodies had been dug from the rubble. Some injured people had been taken to an unknown location for medical treatment.Intelligence officials said they were trying to find out the nationalities of the people killed in the latest attack.

The strike early Sunday hit Newey Adda village in the Datta Khel area near Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district, officials said.

“A US drone fired two missiles. The target was a house said to be used by militants as a compound. Four militants have died,” a senior security official in Peshawar told.

Following the attack, the local tribesmen helped themselves and retrieved the dead from beneath the debris.

During the last two months the U.S. drone attacks in the North Waziristan have intensified, while the local elders have demanded for halting the drone attacks.

NORTH WAZIRISTAN: Twin missile strikes, targeting militants’ compound in North Waziristan and District Datta Khel killed 14 militants on Wednesday, local security officials said.

A US missile strike on a militant compound in North Waziristan killed 10 militants on Wednesday, local security officials said.

The strike took place in Dandey Darpakhel village, five kilometres (three miles) northwest of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district.

“Ten militants were killed in the US drone strike on a militants’ compound,” a senior security official in the area told AFP, adding that the death toll may rise.

Separately, four militants were killed after three missile strikes targeted militants’ vehicle in Datta Khel district.

The vehicle was completed destroyed after the attack.

It was the fifth missile strike in the region

Butt admits nerves almost blew Pakistan victory

LONDON: Pakistani captain Salman Butt admitted that nerves nearly got to his team as they scraped home in the third Test against England at the Oval on Saturday.

Umar Akmal and Mohammad Amir held their nerve to guide the tourists to a four wicket win in what was almost a repeat of their defeat of Australia at Headingley recently when they lost seven wickets chasing 180.

“It was a bit nervous but this time it was by four wickets instead of three,” said Butt.

The result leaves the tourists 2-1 down in the series with one more Test to play at Lord’s starting on Thursday.

Set 148 to win on the fourth day Pakistan got off to a flying start thanks to Butt (48) and Imran Farhat (33) but wobbled when they lost three wickets for eight runs with their target in sight.

But Akmal (16 not out) and Amir (four not out) steadied the ship and Pakistan now
