India develops single-shot insulin for diabetics

NEW DELHI: In a major breakthrough, Indian scientists claimed on Tuesday to have developed single-shot insulin Supramolecular Insulin Assembly-II (SIA-II) which can help diabetics control blood sugar levels for almost two months.

Developed by National Immunology Institute (NII), New Delhi, scientists, SIA-II is said to have tremendous therapeutic potential and is expected to constitute a new way of treatment for diabetes patients around the world.

At present, diabetics go through the trauma of pricking themselves daily, while many even take 90 insulin shots a month.

But a single shot of SIA-II would continuously release just above basal levels of insulin into blood in a sustained manner, curbing the increase in glucose levels after meals. It also does not cause severe hypoglycaemia in the morning, a dreadful condition faced by diabetics.

“A patient has to now take only a single shot of insulin to keep sugar levels under control for over a month. Besides providing relief from the trauma of pricking oneself daily, the drug counters bad effects of diabetes such as cataract and kidney failure,” Avadhesha Surolia, NII director and head of the research team, said.

The breakthrough came after a research of almost three years and at a cost of over Rs20 lakh.

NII scientists have patented the technology and transferred it to a US company, which will conduct clinical trials on humans for toxicity. Surolia said it will take another 4-6 years for the insulin shot to reach the market.

The innovation is one of the biggest to have come from a government research laboratory and the Indian medical community is impressed.

“This is an exciting research. However, the drug system has been tested only on rats and there is a long way to go before it benefits patients,” Anoop Misra, head of diabetes and metabolic diseases at Fortis Hospitals, New Delhi, said.

SIA-II was successfully tested on rats, which demonstrated lower blood glucose levels to normal values up to 120 days.

1cc06fe583o 1116 pacquiao Mayweather Demands Olympic Style Drug Testing Of Pacquiao On top of the fight everyone is talking about, the proposed March 13th mega event of Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr, fans and media are also talking about the Olympic Style Drug testing that team Mayweather Jr. is demanding in order for the fight to take place.

The rigorous testing, a stipulation brought forth during negotiations, will be in place to check both combatants blood and urine samples against steroids, illegal substances and chemicals that might improve performance.

Manny Pacquiao’s Boxing conditioning expert, Alex Ariza is apparently pissed off with the constant demands of the drug tests, which are in addition to the tests performed and required by the very capable Nevada State Athletic Commission. Ariza is not so much angry at the Olympic style drug testing (Ariza is cool with the extra drug testing) wanted by team Mayweather Jr. for both fighters, but is pissed that Team Mayweather Jr. seems to be keeping their focus on the unproven allegations that Pacquiao takes some sort of performance enhancing drug or steroid.

Ariza, who has a solid reputation in the business and is the man in charge of what Pacquiao puts in his body, was recently quoted by the Manila Standard in regards to the drug testing demands coming from Mayweather Jr’s camp. Ariza stated: “No matter where they try to look for something, at the end of the day, Mayweather is going to have to get in that ring and he is just going to have to show up.” Ariza went on to add: “All the posturing about Manny getting knocked out or being on steroids… all of that sh!t. He’s going to have to fight. There’s not going to be any excuses.”

For anyone wondering, Pacquiao has never failed a drug test before or tested positive for steroids or any kind of performance enhancing drugs or stimulants. Pacquiao has been subjected to numerous drug tests over the years by the very capable and highly respected Nevada State Athletics Commission and passed every drug test.

Scientists have been dreaming for a century about therapies that actively harness the power of the body’s immune system to kill cancer cells like an invading virus or bacteria. Today, Seattle-based Dendreon has made history by winning the first-ever FDA approval for this kind of cancer-fighter. Shares climbed 15 percent to $45.50 after the news broke.

The good news for Dendreon (NASDAQ: DNDN) came today when it received clearance from the FDA to start selling sipuleucel-T (Provenge) to men in the U.S. with terminal prostate cancer that has spread, even after prior rounds of standard hormone-deprivation therapy, according to a statement on the FDA website. The agency gave the green light after Dendreon showed in a trial of 512 men that patients lived a median time of 25.8 months if they got Provenge, compared to 21.7 months for those on a placebo. Patients on the drug had minimal side effects of fever and chills that lasted a couple days.

The FDA’s decision will have far-reaching impact for years. The drug is the first marketed product for Dendreon, which has piled up a deficit of more than $700 million in its 18-year development quest. The product is forecasted by analysts to exceed $1 billion in U.S. sales after a couple years on the market. Dendreon could morph into the regional anchor Seattle’s biotech community has lacked since Immunex was acquired by Amgen in 2002. For the 27,000 men in the U.S. who die each year from prostate cancer, the drug represents some hope for a longer life, and a higher quality of life alternative to chemotherapy. And for researchers, it offers new possibilities for a mode of treatment beyond surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted biotech pills and antibodies that must be taken chronically.
