Vuvuzelas are ”World Cup”s symbol” say organisers
JOHANNESBURG: They might be driving some players and supporters to distraction but World Cup organisers on Saturday decreed that the ear-splitting vuvuzela trumpet was the symbol of the tournaement.
“Everybody loves vuvuzelas,” Rich Mkhondo, spokesman for the Local Organising Committee said at a press conference. “They are the symbol of the tournament.”
The tuneless plastic horns, which generate more decibels than a drum or chainsaw, have split opinion almost as much as they have split ears.
Commentators struggled to make themselves heard during the opening matches of the month-long tournament which kicked off on Friday. Many spectators have complained of headaches and some players say they affect their concentration.
However FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said they are part of African football culture and South Africa”s goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune complained they were not loud enough at the hosts” tournament opener against Mexico.
“We want more support and louder vuvuzelas when we play our next match against Uruguay in Pretoria on Wednesday,” he said. “We could hardly hear the fans who were quiet at stages during the game.”
Mkhondo said that no complaints about the vuvuzela had been lodged while a spokesman for FIFA said that fans had so far respected calls not to blow their horns at sensitive moments.
“A few days ago, FIFA asked the fans to respect the ceremonies, speeches and anthems,” said the spokesman Nicolas Maingot. “We have had no problem with that”.

The first sentence out of Lew Perkins’ mouth included the words I accept responsibility and he probably wishes he could’ve just stopped there. It would’ve saved him aggravation, humiliation, and, most strikingly, attacks of ammunition.
This may have been his worst day as Kansas athletic director.
Without question, it is the day his image turns in the eyes of many.
There are so many things to take out of a tenuous and fascinating press conference on Kansas’ campus Wednesday that announced the findings of an internal investigation into a scandal involving up to $3 million in tickets and six former employees.
The takeaway is that the university is shamed, again, another in a long line of foul-ups during Perkins’ seven years as athletic director. There was the Moon Bar stabbing and the point plankn fights and the Mark Mangino mess, and now we have white-collar fraud gone rampant.
Kansas fans move to the back of the line in position for the high ground, by now buried with far more — and recent — embarrassment than secret buyouts at Kansas State or jailhouse tapes at Missouri.
The NBA has rescinded Perkins’ second technical, which means the very call that banished from the second half of the game last night was a mistake, for which the Celtics have already been punished mightily.
It just doesn’t have to be that way. Schwarzenegger lays out bleak California budget
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday called for eliminating California’s welfare-to-work program, one of the deep cuts he proposed to close a $19 billion budget deficit in the coming fiscal year.
Slashing the welfare program would affect 1.4 million people, two-thirds of them children.
In releasing his revised budget plan, the Republican governor laid out the most severe cuts to health and welfare programs since the state tumbled into recession nearly three years ago. He said cuts to government services over the past few years have done away with the “low-hanging fruit.”
“We now have to use the ax to eliminate some of those programs,” he said.
The Republican governor announced his revised budget plan for the fiscal year that begins in July, as the state’s 12.6 percent unemployment rate ranks among the highest in the nation and tax revenue remains low. In April, personal income tax was $3 billion less than projected.

Gina Jackson, a single mother who lives in Fremont in the San Francisco Bay area, said she would not be able finish her college degree in political and social science without the state’s assistance. She currently receives about $1,000 a month to cover after-school care for two of her four children.
“I certainly can’t take my kids to school with me every single day,” said Jackson, 45, who was laid off from her job as an administrative assistant two years ago.
The governor and Republican lawmakers have vowed not to raise taxes, as the Legislature did last year, ensuring that spending cuts will be the main solution. That could leave single mothers, foster youth, children from low-income families, the disabled and seniors who rely on state services feeling most of the pain from the recession’s continued effects on California government.

The Survivor finale should be red hot; but after a series of emotionally gripping episodes last night’s show was underwhelming. It was the calm before the storm or, if you prefer, the elipsiis before the exclamation mark.
Russell turned on Rupert so quickly I initially believed I had missed something. It was only after rewatching the episode that I realized Russell simply changes allies without much provocation. Presumably Rupert is another jury vote he won’t be able to count on if he makes it to the end.
I wonder if Russell could have voted Parvati out if she hadn’t won immunity. I now assume Russell and Parvati will go to the end together after all. If their alliance can survive Danielle, it can survive anything. But if Russell had any sense at all he would get rid of Parvati at the first opportunity, and so would everyone else. Parvati grows closer to unstoppable by the day.
The Palm Pre product placement was classic Survivor camp comedy. Parvati was apparently angling for a role in Palm Pre commercials, or perhaps just a free Palm Pre. Given that spoilers about this season hit the Internet before it had finished filming I was left wondering: Did Parvati have a little too much fun with the web browser?
Colby’s argument with his brother was the highlight of the episode. No one can get under your skin quite like family. He later dropped out of the immunity challenge after mere seconds. His decline continues to dumbfound me.
Russell’s wife was endearing. She wanted to add weight to the bucket so she spit in it. What, did you picture Russell marying a wallflower? She wrung her hair and seemed very competitive. I was happy for Jerri, who has made foolish moves in the game but always shows such lovable vulnerability. But it was fun to imagine Melanie competing on a future season as a way of building the Hantz legacy.
I was glad that Sandra got to see her uncle. Family becomes pretty important when your loved ones are in Afghanistan. The Blow Hole location was a fun one, and I’m surprised Survivor took this long to use it.
Rupert had plenty to say in our interview today. He was in full Rupert form. If you are a fan of Rupert’s, you need to listen to this interview.
He is the only guy who made it on Survivor for 100 days, joining Parvati and Amanda.
He said that people were annoyed with him because he would stop people from blaming others. He tried to make people look at themselves and some people don’t like that. Stephanie would blame everyone else but herself after challenges.
He figured that for Russell to be put into the top 5 villains after one season, he must be like Johnny Fairplay, but 10 times worse, “and he is”.
About that chopping wood that Jerri complained about? “I spent maybe 30 minutes chopping wood. Jerri just needed someone to complain about and I was that person.”
Did he keep the weight off? “I dropped 30 pounds during the game, then gained 35 pounds back on in 6 days. Now, I’m back down to about 215.”

Mike Bacsik, the former Major League Baseball pitcher was fired today for the racist remarks he made on his Twitter account last night, during the game the Dallas Mavericks won against San Antonio Spurs.
The ex-baseball player is now a producer on The Ticket 1310 in Dallas and last night, probably mad at the fact that his favourite team was losing, made some very inappropriate racist comments on his Twitter account. The most offensive of these was aimed at the Mexican community in San Antonio, but it must have annoyed anyone that accessed his Twitter page at that time.
In one of the Tweets, Bacsik even admitted to being drunk, by saying he was “12 deep and some shots”.
