a851d242f4539w cadmium— Cadmium has been discovered in the painted design on “Shrek”-themed drinking glasses being sold nationwide at McDonald’s, forcing the burger giant to recall 12 million of the cheap U.S.-made collectibles while dramatically expanding contamination concerns about the toxic metal beyond imported children’s jewelry.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall early Friday, warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses; McDonald’s said it would post instructions on its website next week regarding refunds.

The 16-ounce glasses, being sold for about $2 each as part of a promotional campaign for the movie “Shrek Forever After,” were available in four designs depicting the characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.2bc8d4e2e250x150 cadmium

In the animated comedy, which debuted May 21 as the latest installment of the successful DreamWorks Animation franchise, the voice of Shrek is performed by Mike Myers of “Austin Powers” fame, Cameron Diaz performs as Princess Fiona, Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots and Eddie Murphy voices Donkey. The movie has been No. 1 at the box office since its release.

The CPSC noted in its recall notice that “long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects.” Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.

In the case of the Shrek-themed glassware, the potential danger would be long-term exposure to low levels of cadmium, which could leach from the paint onto a child’s hand, then enter the body if the child puts that unwashed hand to his or her mouth.

“Shrek Forever After,” billed as the last installment in the franchise, took the top spot at the box office this weekend, as expected. However, with just $71.3 million made, it’s seen as a disappointment.

The second and third “Shrek” movies opened with $108 million and $121 million, respectively. Because “Shrek Forever After” is a 3-D movie, tickets sell for as much as $20 in some theaters, so numbers were expected to be much higher. Has “Shrek” run its course?

The weekend’s other new release, “MacGruber,” bombed significantly, making only $4.1 million in 2500 theaters despite good reviews and a big marketing campaign.03f814c646e 13 shrek forever after
Last week we attended the press conference for the movie, now ominously known as Shrek: The Final Chapter. It was held in two waves: The first held director Mike Mitchell and several producers, while the second had almost the entire cast, including the returning cast of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas, along with newcomers Dorn, Jon Hamm, Craig Robinson, and even Ryan Seacrest, whose small role as the father of a precocious kid at a birthday party for Shrek’s kids left him free to moderate the actors’ portion of the day.

With a history dating back to 1998, when Dreamworks started work on the original Shrek, there was plenty to discuss, especially with the Shrek franchise evidently coming to a close with the 3-D Final Chapter. That said, here are our favorite highlights from the day.

Kevin Harvick

Harvick remains the leader as the Cup Series heads into a non-points weekend with the All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Harvick has a 69-point lead in the standings. Points racing resumes on May 30 with the Coca-Cola 600. Harvick finished 15th in last year’s All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and did not lead a lap. He won the 2007 race.

Kyle Busch :

Busch finished seventh in last year’s All-Star Race but led 33 of the 100 laps. “Last year’s All-Star Race was really quiet for the majority, and then the last 10 laps, if I would have had a car that was capable of running up front and leading the laps, I would’ve gotten to the front and been gone,” Busch said. “Unfortunately for us, our car was way too tight in the last segment.

Jimmie Johnson :

Johnson took a big drop, losing two positions in the standings, and is 131 out of the lead. Johnson finished 13th in this race last year after leading a race-high 50 laps. Johnson won the 2006 and 2003 All-Star races.

ac38151ccakeeper my sister s keeperThe final installment in the Shrek series, Shrek Forever After, hits theaters today, May 21st.

The ensemble cast welcomes back the vocal talents of Mike Myers (Austin Powers, Wayne’s World), Cameron Diaz (My Sister’s Keeper, The Holiday), Eddie Murphy (Beverly Hills Cop, Doctor Dolittle), and Antonio Banderas (Desperado), as well as newbie Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame. In fact, the fourth Shrek film features the same writers, cast and crew as the previous three animated films, a rarity in any film sequence these days. The film premiered to rave reviews by critics and viewers alike.

The plot, per IMDB, finds Shrek in an alternate universe after making a pact with Rumpelstiltskin to leave his domestic life and “feel like a real ogre again.” Naturally things go awry, and Shrek has to find his way back to his one true love, Princess Fiona.

While I’ve yet to see the film (such is the life of a new parent), I feel confident it will follow on the heels of it’s predecessors and be a big hit!

White House Blocking Media Access To Elena Kagan’s Family

In a move unlikely to reassure Elena Kagan skeptics who want to know more about the Supreme Court nominee, the Obama administration is evidently keeping Kagan’s family from talking to the press on the grounds that the White House is “uncomfortable with the idea at this time.”

A growing number of Kagan critics worry that it’s nigh-impossible to judge the Supreme Court nominee on the basis of her extremely limited record of public statements on the principal legal issues of the day.

But reporters trying to conduct standard interviews with Kagan’s family members or sit in on a constitutional law class taught by Kagan’s brother Irving have been shut down by the White House, in the latter case after Irving Kagan and his school had already tentatively agreed to the request.

Regina King

94cfd4b234friend Regina KingRegina King, With her everyday beauty and winning personality, actress Regina King could have made a career out of playing wives of leading men Eddie Murphy, Will Smith and Cuba Gooding Jr., as she did in films like “Daddy Day Care” (2003), “Enemy of the State” (1998) and “Jerry Maguire” (1996). But her talents and outsized personality were destined to break out sooner or later. And sure enough, King stole the show from her leading ladies with memorable supporting roles in “Legally Blond 2” (2003) and “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Dangerous” (2005). But it was her turn as R&B legend Ray Charles’ backup singer and lover, Margie Hendricks, in the acclaimed “Ray” (2005) that earned the actress considerable praise and recognition, leading to higher profile work and a regular role on the sixth season of “24” (Fox, 2001- ).

Born Jan. 15, 1971, King grew up in Los Angeles, CA, where she would later say that she did not find stardom – stardom found her. Certain that performing was her future, King took acting lessons as a child from coach Betty Bridges, mother of “Diff’rent Strokes” star Todd Bridges. By the time she was a teenager, she landed a role in the saucy sitcom “227” (NBC, 1985-1990), playing Brenda, daughter of series lead Marla Gibbs. After graduating from Westchester High School in 1988, she enrolled at the University of Southern California, before making the leap to more mature roles with parts in “Boyz in the Hood” (1991) and “Poetic Justice” (1993). She appeared in guest starring roles on “Northern Exposure” (CBS, 1990-95), “New York Undercover” (Fox, 1994-98) and the sitcom “Living Single” (Fox, 1993-98), then later appeared in “High Learning” (1995) as well as the cult comedy hit, “Friday” (1995).

After playing the girlfriend of Martin Lawrence in “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (1996), she moved on to a breakout role as the wife of Cuba Gooding Jr. in the 1996 smash hit, “Jerry Maguire.” With her memorable scolding look at her son for using a profanity while watching a football game, the part captured the attention of mainstream audiences and put King squarely on the map. She went on to appear as the wife of Will Smith in the action thriller, “Enemy of the State” (1998), then took roles in “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” (1998) and “Mighty Joe Young” (1998). On television, she appeared in “Where the Truth Lies” (Lifetime, 1999) and “If These Walls Could Talk 2” (HBO, 2000), before landing a regular role on the short-lived sitcom, “Leap of Faith” (NBC, 2002).

King continued her steady climb up the Hollywood food chain move with a series of supporting roles in blockbusters such as “Daddy Day Care,” (2003) playing the wife of star Eddie Murphy, and in “Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde,” (2003) in the part of Grace, the whip-smart chief of staff to Congresswoman Sally Field and arch rival of bubbly, pink-loving law school grad, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon). King next had a memorable comedic turn as a feisty FBI agent in the surprise hit sequel, “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Dangerous” (2005), opposite Sandra Bullock. The two took pride in performing many of their own stunts, though King suffered a twisted ankle during a climactic fight scene after tripping over her own wig.

It was during the shooting of “Miss Congeniality” that King heard the news that she won the role of Margie Hendricks, mistress and backup singer for Ray Charles (Jaime Foxx), in Taylor Hackford’s biopic, “Ray.” Excited by the meaty role, which she insisted upon playing over the role of Charles’ wife, Della Bea Robinson (Kerry Washington), King set out to learn as much as she could about the real-life “Raelette,” who only appeared in a handful of film clips and photographs. King relied heavily on word-of-mouth accounts and information director Taylor Hackford gleaned from Charles himself before his passing just prior to the movie’s release. King was recognized for her stellar performance with Image and BET awards.
