Embryonic stem cells tested on patient for first time

Researchers in the US have begun the world’s first clinical trial of a new therapy for patients with spinal cord injuries, using human embryonic stem cells.
The groundbreaking experiment, run by a private biotechnology firm called Geron Corp., is still in an early phase, meant primarily to test the treatment for safety. But it could mark a landmark for a therapy that could have the potential to treat a variety of diseases.
The unidentified patient with a crushed spinal cord in being treated at Shepherd Center, a spinal cord and brain injury center in Atlanta, Ga., Geron Corp. said.
The patient is being treated with GRNOPC1, a trademark therapy that contains cells called oligodendrocyte progenitor cells. The cells turn into oligodendrocytes, which are cells that produce myelin, a nerve coating that allows impulses to move along the nerves.
The hope is that if the therapy works, the progenitor cells will produce new oligodendrocytes in the injured area of the patient’s spine, potentially allowing for new movement.
Earlier studies on lab rats showed that GRNOPC1 significantly improved movement in animals with spinal cord injuries when injected seven days after the injury.
The company has said it plans to enroll eight to 10 patients in the study at sites across the U.S. All of the patients enrolled in the study will try the treatment within two weeks of their spinal cord injury. The therapy will be injected into the patients’ spines between their third and 10th thoracic vertebrae, or roughly the middle to upper back.
This trial phase will take about two years, with each patient being studied for one year. If the therapy is shown to be safe in humans, that could then lead to larger and longer studies that would be more focused on the effectiveness of the therapy.
Later trials might also include patients with less severe spinal injuries and damage to other parts of the spine.

Washington: Big powers fail to agree on capital reforms

The International Monetary Fund called Saturday for further study on global imbalances and exchange rate policies, stopping short of any specific calls to head off what some see as a looming currency war. The IMF steering committee, which has been struggling to find a consensus on easing currency tensions among key economies including China and the United States, said the organization should continue its study of the issue. While the international monetary system has proved resilient, tensions and vulnerabilities remain as a result of widening global imbalances, continued volatile capital flows, exchange rate movements and issues related to the supply and accumulation of official reserves, it said in a statement. Given that these issues are critically important… we call on the Fund to deepen its work in these areas, including in-depth studies to help increase the effectiveness of policies to manage capital flows. The statement from the International Monetary and Financial Committee, the policy arm of the IMF, stopped short of any specific call on China or others to change policies of using a low currency and accumulation of reserves to boost exports. There are frictions obviously, committee chair Yousaf Boutros-Ghali said at the conclusion of talks at IMF headquarters in Washington. These are being addressed. We have come to the conclusion that the IMF is the place to deal with these issues. IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, when asked about the failure to come up with a stronger statement, said that there is only one obstacle, and that is an agreement of the members. He added that I don’t believe action can be done in a way other than in a cooperative way. Recent IMF figures showed Beijing had currency reserves of 2.447 trillion dollars, the largest in the world and nearly 30 percent of the global total. Washington maintains that China purchases large amounts of dollars to keep the yuan artificially low, which distorts global trade by boosting Chinese exports. The has done little to ease fears of a global currency war, with the United States and China facing off over Beijing’s currency policies.

Thursday Night Football,Thursday Night Football Channel:For those of you who just can’t get enough mediocre football, tonight NFL Network begins its two-month stretch of Thursday night programming with the 4-4 Bears traveling to face the 3-5 49ers. It’s a scintillating matchup that we’ll be watching closely between sips of cognac and snippets of The Vampire Diaries. Here’s a few things about Bears/Niners to watch for:

1. Watch for Losing Football:
The Bears have lost three of four, and in two of those losses they failed to hold their opponent under 30 points in the first half. Cedric Benson, Beanie Wells, hell, Connie Britton could run on this defense right now. The 49ers, meanwhile, actually come into this game with a longer losing streak, as they’ve dropped four straight. They turned the ball over four times last week in a home loss to the Titans, who converted the 49ers’ mishaps into 24 points.

alex-smith-san-francisco-49ers-girlfriend2. Watch for Nuclear QB’s: Alex Smith was drafted first overall. Jay Cutler was drafted 11th. Both have endured their share of criticism during their short time in the league, Smith for being a horrible player and Cutler for throwing mind-boggling interceptions and never making the playoffs/finishing with a winning record. After a brief flirtation with servicable QB play, Smith threw three INT’s last week against the Titans. Cutler’s Bears are 4-4 and he’s on pace to throw 24 picks this year. The more things change…

e838bd1ed100x203 Thursday Night Football,Thursday Night Football Channel3. Watch for Vernon Davis: Davis is tied for the league lead in TD receptions with seven, is a devastating run blocker, and his string of circus catches against the Texans last month was appointment viewing. But prior to this game, he decided to “poke the Bear” by boasting of how the 49ers were going to destroy Chicago’s defensive front. Everyone else has, right? But did he venture too far into Rex Ryan territory for head coach Mike Singletary’s liking? Keep an eye on the sidelines for any potential blowups.

4. Watch for Tommie Hearns, er, Tommie Harris: The former All-Pro, pocket-collapsing dynamo played one series against Arizona last week before being ejected for launching a quick right hook to the head of a Cardinals’ offensive linemen. Harris has been plagued by lower-body injuries over the past three seasons that have sapped his effectiveness and limited his game appearances. He’ll be under a microscope tonight.continue

Hours later, Google announced the company on his blog his own accord, with the promise that the Twitter messages, or Tweets, be incorporated in the search results “in the coming months.” Both companies did not disclose financial terms. Microsoft also announced an agreement to include the contents of the social network Facebook on Wednesday.

Analyzing Web Traffic, Firm Purchased Adobe

e07967a61dadobe Analyzing Web Traffic, Firm Purchased AdobeAdobe Systems said it would buy the Web analytics software company Omniture for about $1.8 billion, giving the maker of content-creation software a way to let marketers monitor the effectiveness of such content.

Adobe, based in San Jose, Calif., will pay $21.50 a share in cash, a premium of 24 percent over Omniture’s closing stock price Tuesday. Omniture shares jumped nearly 26 percent in after-hours trading.

Adobe also said it had earned $136 million, or 26 cents a share, in the fiscal third quarter that ended in August, down 29 percent from the same time a year earlier. Excluding one-time items, Adobe earned 35 cents a share, a penny above what analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting.

Adobe, the maker of Photoshop, Flash and Acrobat software, said its revenue fell 21 percent to $697.5 million.

Omniture, based in Orem, Utah, offers a variety of Web traffic analysis tools and other products for companies to improve their marketing over the Internet. The acquisition would marry Adobe’s tools for creating Web sites and ads with Omniture’s services for figuring how to best deliver messages.

Trip Chowdhry, an analyst with Global Equities Research, said the planned acquisition would allow Adobe to create new streams of revenue even as its existing businesses declined.

Though he called the deal “timely,” Mr. Chowdhry said Adobe was overpaying. He said $12 to $13 a share, rather than $21.50, would have been a fair value.
