MUMBAI: President Barack Obama announced $10 billion in business deals on Saturday as he arrived in India to boost U.S. exports and jobs after a mauling in mid-term polls, but he ran into immediate controversy over Pakistan.

Obama flew into Mumbai, India’s financial hub, and announced the United States would also relax export controls over sensitive technology, a demand of India’s that will help deepen U.S. ties with the emerging global power and its trillion dollar economy.

While most of the announced deals had been pending for months, Obama’s visit, the first leg of a 10-day Asian tour, has been hailed as moving the United States closer to India as Washington tries to revive a weak economy and gather support to pressure China on its currency.

“The United States sees Asia, especially India, as the market of the future,” Obama told a meeting of U.S. and Indian

SYDNEY: Men with high-fat diets are more likely to have diabetic children, research showed Thursday, in the first study linking a baby’s health to what their father ate.

The study tracked a group of rats that were fed fatty foods until they were obese and showing precursory signs of type 2 diabetes and were then bred with females of average weight, explained lead researcher Margaret Morris.

Morris said that despite being reared on a strictly healthy diet, their offspring developed impaired glucose tolerance and insulin production when they reached young adulthood.

“If what we are seeing here in a rat translates to a human it may well explain the emerging earlier rates of diabetes in younger and younger people,” said Morris, from the University of New South Wales.

Rather than passing their ill health onto their children genetically Morris said the

The sleek touchscreen phone, dubbed the Nexus One, is Google’s boldest foray outside its traditional Internet home turf and represents the first time the 11-year-old company will sell a consumer electronics device bearing its well-known brand.

But analysts say the phone is not as revolutionary in design as Apple Inc’s iPhone was. Tech websites and forums gave Google favorable reviews but also noted the new phone was not that different from others in the market that run Google’s Android software, such as Motorola’s Droid.

The Nexus One ships immediately and exclusively from Google’s online store for $179 with a two-year contract from Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA, or $529 without a service plan.

The more expensive unlocked phone, analysts say, is priced too high to dramatically alter the relationship between carriers and hardware vendors in which wireless service providers have traditionally controlled handset distribution in the U.S.

But Ban says he’s “aware that this is just the beginning” of a process to craft a binding pact to rein in greenhouse gas emissions. Still, Ban says the Copenhagen Agreement “will have an immediate operational effect.”

Many poor nations had bitterly protested the deal because it lacks specific targets for reducing carbon emissions
