Japan’s new Prime Minister Naoto Kan has named his cabinet and is due to be formally sworn in by Emperor Akihito.

As expected, he chose his former deputy Yoshihiko Noda to replace him as finance minister, while the foreign and defence ministers remain in office.

Mr Kan was elected prime minister by lawmakers on Friday, two days after the abrupt resignation of Yukio Hatoyama.

Mr Hatoyama stepped down amid tensions over a controversial US military base on the island of Okinawa.

Mr Kan has assured President Barack Obama that he will relocate the base, as agreed, despite anger from locals who want it moved off Okinawa entirely.

Naoto Kan, a straight-talking populist, was elected prime minister Friday, replacing Yukio Hatoyama who stepped down last week after breaking a campaign promise to move the Marine base off the southern island of Okinawa.

Kan told Obama that relations with Washington are a “cornerstone” of Japan’s diplomacy and vowed to “further deepen and develop the Japan-U.S. alliance to tackle global and regional challenges,” Japan’s Foreign Ministry said.

He also promised Obama to “make a strenuous effort” to tackle the relocation of Marine Air Station Futenma, it said.

Under an agreement signed last month between the two governments, the base is to be moved to a less-crowded part of Okinawa, but Kan faces intense opposition from island residents who want it moved off Okinawa completely, as Hatoyama had promised. Because their opposition is so intense, some analysts have questioned whether the plan can actually be carried out. Kan will also have his hands full coping with his coalition ally Shizuka Kamei, who heads a small conservative party whose votes are needed in the upper house to pass laws smoothly.

Kamei, who was retained as banking minister, has advocated big spending to boost growth and insists that a controversial bill to roll back the privatization of the postal system be enacted in a session of parliament scheduled to end on June 16.

In response, France[11] attacked Mexico to force payment of this debt. France decided that it would try to take over and occupy Mexico.[12] France was successful at first in its invasion; however, on May 5, 1862, at the city of Puebla, Mexican forces were able to defeat an attack by the larger French army. In the Battle of Puebla, the Mexicans were led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Although the Mexican army was victorious over the French at Puebla, the victory only delayed the French advance on Mexico City. A year later, the French occupied Mexico. The French occupying forces placed Emperor Maximilian I on the throne of Mexico in 1864. The French, under pressure from the United States, eventually withdrew in 1866-1867. Maximilian was deposed by President Benito Juárez and executed, five years after the Battle of Puebla.

Barack Obama Delays Japan Visit after Texas Shooting

e64e706d3aooting Barack Obama Delays Japan Visit after Texas ShootingBarack Obama Delays Japan Visit after Texas Shooting, US President Barack Obama has delayed his visit to Japan next week by one day, a Japanese foreign ministry official said on Saturday, following a deadly shooting at a military base in Texas.

Japanese national broadcaster NHK and Jiji Press reported that Washington had asked Tokyo to change the schedule for the two-day visit to allow Obama to attend a memorial service for the 13 people killed in Thursday’s shooting.

Obama had been due to arrive for his first trip to Japan on Thursday for talks with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and to meet Emperor Akihito.

“The (US) government has requested a delay,” a foreign ministry official told AFP, adding that the Japanese government had agreed to the request.

Obama would now be arriving on Friday and stay until Saturday, the official said. A meeting scheduled for Friday with Hatoyama would go ahead as planned, Kyodo News reported, quoting an unnamed foreign ministry source.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs earlier told reporters in the United States that Obama would attend a memorial service for those killed when a Muslim army doctor went on the rampage at the Fort Hood base.

“When a service is scheduled the president will attend,” he said, adding only that the timing of the memorial would be scheduled “for the convenience of the families.”

The US president’s visit to Japan is likely to be dominated by a row over an American military base on the southern island of Okinawa.

Residents have long complained about the base and plan to relocate it to another part of the island, while Hatoyama’s government, which came to power in September, has promised to review the issue.

Hatoyama on Friday said he did not plan to make a decision on the base before Obama’s visit.

While the Japanese leader has promised to review a pact under which a new US base would be built on the island, Washington has insisted Tokyo stick to the agreement.

The issue has clouded ties ahead of Obama’s visit.
