Mismanagement mars entry tests for ASI posts in Lahore

LAHORE: Mismanagement was quite evident in Lahore, where thousands of candidates had to face the scorching heat to sit in entry tests for the vacant posts of assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs).

Written tests were conducted across the province for vacant posts of ASIs in Punjab police.

Some 15, 000 candidates turned to University of Engineering Technology (UET) to appear in the tests for 32 seats of Lahore Division.

Due to mismanagement, the test started late by one and half an hour.

Candidates complained that insufficient arrangements were made for the tests. They said that they had no access to water while a number of candidates had to sit under the scorching sun.

Dengue surfaces in Lahore

LAHORE: The government has not taken appropriate measures as more than 50 patients have tested positive for dengue in Lahore, SAMAA reported Wednesday.

The Punjab Institute of Public Health has confirmed 37 patients dengue positive.

Sources said that several students, including those from Engineering University are among the victims.

Most of the patients are from Dharampura, Singhapura, Gulberg and Samanabad.

The provincial Health Secretary has received a plan from the Punjab Institute of Public Health to counter the outbreak of dengue, steps have yet to be taken.

Expressing concern, the locals have said that the figure can rise if concerned authorities do not take proper measures immediately. SAMAA

Lahore: UET student commits suicide

A 23-year-old student of University of Engineering & Technology (UET) committed suicide in the university hostel mysteriously, Dunya News reported on Wednesday.
According to the hostelites, Sifwat Ghayyur, resident of Gilgit, was in his 2nd year of Mechanical Engineering. On Tuesday, he had his lunch in the mess and later went to his room. When his room-mate tried to enter the room, it transpired that it was locked from inside.
On not having any response on knocking, the lock was broken. Sifwats body was seen strung with the ceiling fan. A letter, said to be written by the deceased, stated that he committed suicide due to financial straits.His family, however, denied any such thing, saying that he belonged to a feudal family.

NED University entry tests attended by thousands of students

KARACHI: As many as 8,000 students appeared in the entry tests conducted by the NED University of Engineering and Technology for its various faculties on Sunday.

The test started at 10am and concluded at 12pm.

Special security arrangements were made with deployments of police and rangers at the test center.

Besides, a medical camp was also set up to deal with any emergency situation. SAMAA

Karachi to have 400 CNG buses soon: minister

KARACHI: Karachi is about to have four hundred CNG buses on its roads as part of the government”s policy to promote environment friendly public transport system.

Federal Minister for Environment, Hameedullah Jan Afridi talking to journalists following a seminar on Clean Development Mechanism here on Monday said subsidy of Rs 700,000 is being offered to introduce clean and green transportation.

“A total of 800 CNG buses have been procured for the country and required funding is in process by State Bank of Pakistan,” he told the journalists.

In reply to a question he said the government has not taken into confidence the transport bodies about its scheme to introduce CNG buses.

“I do not think they should have any objection as the field is open and they too can participate in the bidding,” he said.

The minister was confident that masses will appreciate the public friendly initiative that would offer clean, cost effective and efficient transport facility.

To another question, he said scarcity of gas is fortunately not an issue in the southern parts of the country.

Hameedullah Jan Afridi said a fool proof mechanism is also being introduced under which every vehicle will be required a thorough inspection on annual basis.

The minister said his ministry was committed to facilitate industries keen to adopt clean development mechanism.

Malaysian companies have shown keen interest to invest in solid waste management, he said answering to another query.

Normal monsoon expected: DG Met

ISLAMABAD: Normal monsoon rains are expected during forthcoming season and Meteorology office has installed eight radars to monitor river water flow and weather forecast in different parts of the country.

Director General Pakistan Meteorology Department(PMD) Dr. Qamar Zaman Chaudhry revealed this information during the presentation at the fourth pre-monsoon coordination meeting of National Disaster Management Authority here on Monday.

He said that monsoon is likely to set in second week of the July and added that heavy rains are expected during August. He said that hilly areas and southern part of the country would receive more rains in the course of the season.

Giving details of the Met office projects DG Met said that on the basis of 80 percent accuracy of weather forecast, “we predict confidentially by getting data through satellites and radar stations, adding, we also use European and Chinese satellites to update our weather forecasts”.

Qamar Zaman Chaudhry said, “we disseminate weather updates through different means including website, fax, phone, mobile phone to print and electronic media”.

Earlier, Chairman NDMA Gen Nadeem (retd) while giving his welcome address said that with an experience of many years, “we have fine tuned our early warning system for floods”.

During the presentation representative of Army Engineering Directorate said that prior to this meeting Engineering Directorate of Pakistan Army has called an exercise to meet the challenges of the forthcoming monsoon season rain fall and flooding.

In this context, he said, “we have also made a plan that during any emergency a collective relief work would be launched work with the liaison of NDMA, PDMA and Federal Flood Commission (FFC)”.

Later, representatives of all four provinces gave presentation about the current situation of their respective provinces and their preparations to meet the challenge of natural calamities specially floods.

Tension still prevails in Karachi; toll reaches 36

The situation in Karachi is still tense as so far 36 persons have been gunned down and other violent activities are also on despite Rangers takeover of the metropolitan.
Some educational institutes have been opened; however, exams in Jamia Karachi and Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology are postponed owing to the tension prevailing in the city.
The said varsities would reschedule their examination datesheet.
