London: Construction of Olympic stadium for 2012 complete
Construction work at the London 2012 Olympic Stadium came to an end on Tuesday as the last piece of turf was laid in the pitch. The venue, which seats 80,000 spectators, took just under three years to build from start to finish at a cost of £486 million. More than 5,250 people have worked on the project.
The final touch will be applied later this year when the running track s top surface will be put on. London 2012 chief Sebastian Coe laid the final piece of turf along with Namibian sprinting great Frankie Fredericks. Some 360 rolls of turf were needed to cover the 9,000-square meter infield area. The two-tier bowl in Stratford, east London, will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the athletics track and field events. After the Games have finished, English Premier League football side West Ham United will take it over, moving from their Upton Park home.

BLACKPOOL: Prince William, who announced his engagement to fiancee Kate Middleton this week, took time off from planning the wedding of the year to watch the football on Saturday.
The prince, second in line to the throne, is the president of the Football Association, the sport’s governing body in England.
Wearing a baseball hat and glasses, William was spotted in the crowd at Bloomfield Road watching Blackpool beat struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the English Premier League.
A spokesman for the prince’s St James’s Palace office said he was enjoying a private weekend with friends which had been planned for a long time.
William, 28, is a search and rescue helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force on the island of Anglesey, northwest Wales.

Defending champion Chelsea returned to England’s FA Cup final with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Didier Drogba scored on a ball from John Terry in the 68th minute and Florent Malouda side-footed home a right-wing cross from Michael Ballack in the 89th minute at Wembley Stadium. Frank Lampard knocked in the third goal in injury time.
In the May 15 final at Wembley, Chelsea would face the winner of Sunday’s semifinal between Tottenham and Portsmouth.
Chelsea also leads the English Premier League. Sebastien Le Toux — who played for Seattle Sounders FC last season — scored three goals, including the tiebreaker in the 80th minute, and the expansion Philadelphia Union won its inaugural Major League Soccer home match with a 3-2 victory over DC United.
