Twin Blasts in Stockholm Leave one Dead

STOCKHOLM: Twin blasts in central Stockholm killed one person and injured two others, in what Sweden’s foreign minister said was a “terrorist” attack that could have had “catastrophic” consequences.
The explosions on Saturday, in a busy part of the capital packed with Christmas shoppers, came minutes after a Swedish news agency received a message denouncing Sweden’s military presence in Afghanistan and threatening deadly attacks.
One of the blasts killed the suspected bomber, Sweden television reported, although neither police nor the intelligence service would confirm that it was an attack.
But Bildt’s comments, sent from his Twitter account, were unequivocal.
“Most worrying attempt at terrorist attack in crowded part of central Stockholm,” wrote Bildt. “Failed — but could have been truly catastrophic…” he added.
The first blast hit at around 4:50 pm (1550 GMT) when a parked car packed with gas canisters exploded, police said.
That explosion left two people in need of hospital treatment for minor injuries, said emergency services spokesman Bengt Norberg.
The second blast was about 200 metres (650 feet) away, he added.
Police spokeswoman Petra Sjolandero said one person had been found dead at the site of this explosion.
“I cannot confirm that the death is linked to the explosion of the car but I cannot deny it either,” she added.
But media reported that a bag filled with nails had been found near the body of the man who, it said, was thought to be the bomber.
And witnesses cited by Dagens Nyheter newspaper said the dead man had a large wound to his stomach as if something had exploded there.
Swedish news agency reported that it had received messages about 10 minutes before the first blast in Arabic and Swedish, warning of unspecified “action.”

7 killed in Bihar blast

Five children and two adults were killed in India on Sunday when a bomb planted by Maoist rebels exploded in the eastern state of Bihar as polling booths closed after local elections, police said.
The left-wing guerrillas planted the bomb in a cooking gas cylinder in Aurangabad district, 130 kms (80 miles) south of Patna city, to disrupt voting for the state assembly poll that ended on Saturday, officers said.
Police detected the bomb on Saturday evening but were unable to defuse it and had left it in a field for specialists to handle.
The blast took place when curious villagers gathered to inspect the bomb, senior police officer P.K. Thakur said. It is not certain what triggered the explosion.
Bihar state elections have a history of violence but were mostly peaceful during the one month of staggered voting that began on October 21. Maoist rebels in India have stepped up attacks in response to a government offensive that began late last year in the forests of the so-called Red Corridor that stretches across north and eastern India. The insurgency, which began in 1967, feeds off land disputes, police brutality and corruption and is strongest in the poorest and most deprived areas of India, many of which are rich in natural resources.
Rescue efforts at NZ mine face further delay

GREYMOUTH: Efforts to rescue 29 men trapped in a New Zealand coal mine faced more agonising delays on Sunday when authorities said they needed to drill a new shaft to test air quality because toxic gases made it too dangerous for rescue teams go in.
There has been no contact with the miners since an explosion ripped through the colliery on the rugged west coast of New Zealand’s South Island on Friday afternoon, with authorities saying they would not enter until the air quality improved.
“It’s not a case of simply pulling on a mask and running in there, the risk is huge,” district police commander Gary Knowles said. “I’m not going to put 16 guys underground to effect a half-arsed rescue.”
Naturally occurring methane gas is thought to have caused the explosion. High levels of gas have been detected near mine ventilation shafts, but rescue teams need to know gas
