Pakistan’s president says he’s willing to consider reopening negotiations with the Pakistani Taliban insisting his nation is doing more than ever to combat terrorism.
President Asif Ali Zardari told The Associated Press that his country has cleaned up the Swat Valley and South Waziristan and is still tackling lawless areas in Pakistan.
He says dialogue, deterrence and development are key to combatting terrorism, and that the door is still open for negotiations with the Taliban. He offered no time frame or conditions for such talks.
President Asif Ali Zardari reached London for talks on trade, terrorism and Afghanistan with Prime Minister David Cameron at the British leader’s country residence Friday.
Cameron’s Downing Street office said the meeting was an opportunity for Britain to pledge its support for stability, security, democracy and prosperity. But it’s also an opportunity to smooth over a flap about Cameron’s critical comments on Pakistan’s approach to tackling terrorism.
Last week in India, Cameron accused elements in Pakistan of allowing the export of terror, suggesting not enough was being done to tackle terror groups inside Pakistan’s borders. The comments outraged Pakistani officials and prompted Pakistan’s intelligence chief to cancel a planned trip to London.

News Trends: With the floods sweeping south, thousands of people were rendered homeless as heavy rains continued to lash Sindh and water levels rose further in the swollen Indus River. Massive water flow of 1,130,000 cusecs of water now heads to Kotri Barrage. People fled in whatever they could, carrying goats and whatever they could. Roads were submerged in several places and at least 35 of the low lying villages were under water in Sukkur.
The Indus River is in extremely high flood in the Guddu and Sukkur barrages. Widespread rains are also expected over lower Sindh in the coming days. Immense pressure on the Sukkur Barrage with 1,184,200 cusecs of water flowing downstream and 1,168,500 upstream may cause breaches in the barrages which would cause further devastation, all major districts of Sindh, including Sukkur, Khairpur, Nawabshah , Sangar, Dadu and Hyderabad will witness flooding.
