Bollywood’s Salman Khan to have surgery in US

MUMBAI: Leading Bollywood actor Salman Khan is to have surgery in the United States to correct a facial nerve disorder that leaves him in excruciating pain, he said in an article published on Friday.
The 45-year-old star of blockbuster films like “Dabangg” (Fearless) wrote in the Hindustan Times newspaper that he had been prescribed strong medication to alleviate the symptoms, which first began four years ago.
But the drugs were ineffective and he has been in constant agony for the last year, leaving him unable to eat or drink anything cold.
“The pain is a bit too much now. So I’m going to the US to get it fixed,” he wrote in the English-language daily.
“Now, we’re getting down to something we should have done a long time ago — taking care of it.”
Doctors diagnosed Khan with trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve disorder caused by pressure on the nerve carrying sensations from the brain to the face, leading to stabbing or electric shock-like pain.
Khan said that tests, including an MRI scan, also identified an aneurysm, which caused a swelling of the blood vessels in the brain.
“That has a chance of bleeding and could be fatal. But they’re just scaring me,” he added.
Trigeminal neuralgia is thought to be associated with ageing. Pain is localised in one part of the face, usually the eye, cheek or jaw and can make everyday tasks like eating or brushing teeth excruciating.
With pain in his jaw, it once took him 90 minutes to eat an omelette, Khan said.
Tests had determined the condition was caused by veins wrapped around the nerve, he added.
The surgery means he will miss the release of his new film “Bodyguard” on August 31, which also stars Kareena Kapoor. AGENCIES

Later on Twitter, the teen pop idol apologized for his gesture, “Had a great bday and at the end of the night we got surrounded by paps and i reacted in a way i know better. im sorry.” He went on explaining his feeling that night, “It’s not always easy but i know better than to react in anger.”
Bieber apologized for the middle finger, but I don’t think his fans were too offended.

LONDON: Britain was “very unlikely” to introduce a ban on Muslim women wearing face-covering veils despite widespread public support for such a move, Immigration Minister Damian Green said.
He told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper that a ban similar to that approved in France, and which a poll on Friday showed was backed by 67 percent of Britons, was a “rather un-British thing to do”.
A fellow Conservative lawmaker had earlier said he refused to meet female constituents who wore the face veil and had proposed a law to ban the practice.
However, Green said: “Telling people what they can and can”t wear, if they”re just walking down the street, is a rather un-British thing to do. We”re a tolerant and mutually respectful society.”
The immigration minister acknowledged there were occasions when it was important to be able to see someone”s face.
“But I think it”s very unlikely and it would be undesirable for the British parliament to try and pass a law dictating what people wore,” he said.
Green added that unlike France, Britain was not “aggressively secular”.
This week French lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to ban face-covering veils in public, in a bill which will go to the Senate for approval.
Philip Hollobone, a member of parliament (MP) from Prime Minister David Cameron”s Conservative party, said Saturday that he demands women remove their face veils when they visit him in his constituency in central England.
“If she said: ”No”, I would take the view that she could see my face, I could not see hers, I am not able to satisfy myself she is who she says she is,” he told the Independent newspaper.

Reading Richard Russell’s daily notes are like reading a real-time history book. Like any investor, he is often wrong, but his knowledge of the history of the market is truly unmatched. He is one of the few men who is still around to tell us about the Great Depression and how similar today’s economy feels. Russell has become increasingly bearish since early April. He says the market is crumbling and believes the internals are so bad that the market is very vulnerable to substantial downside. He even goes so far as to say the we won’t recognize the country by the end of this year. “There’s a hard rain coming”. Yikes:
“The market is crumbling, in the face of rosy news this is the worst kind of action. The market is severely oversold now, and if we don’t get a bounce next week, it’s “Katie, bar the door.” My PTI was down 6 to 6116. MA was 6075, so my PTI remains bullish by a shrinking 41, lowest in weeks. June gold gave up less than two bucks today, which is great relative strength action. GDX closed higher today, which is bullish for gold. This market action is catching investors by complete surprise, and as such it is proving very costly. Billions in paper values are being lost.
Finally, it’s happening. The stock market has “lost its mind.” The poor thing is falling apart, when every sane investor knows that the market “should be” going up as it discounts the almost certain better economy that lies ahead. Then I remember that the stock market reflects what everybody knows about everything and anything that pertains to business and the forthcoming economy. So alas, the stock market has finally gone insane. It’s not telling us what we already know.
I search Saturday’s Wall Street Journal and right on the front page I read, “The recovery is beating expectations as data show consumer and manufacturing strength.”
Then I look at the latest issue of Barron’s and right on the cover I read, “STRONGER THAN EVER – America’s biggest companies are sitting on loads of cash and ready to earn higher profits than ever before. What it means for the economy, dividends and your investments.”
And I ask myself, “Am I seeing things? The April 26 high for the Dow was 11205.03. The Dow is selling as write at 10557 down 648 points from its April high. If business is even better than expected, then why is the Dow down over 600 points? And why, if there were 674 new highs on the NYSE on April 26, were there only 20 new highs on Friday, May 14? And if my PTI was 6133 on April 26, why is it down 17 points since its April high?
The fact is that I’ve been seeing deterioration in the stock market
ever since early-April, and this in the face of improving business
news. The D-J Industrial Average is composed of 30 internationally
known top-quality blue-chip stocks. These are 30 of “America’s biggest
companies.” If Barron’s is so bullish on the future of America’s
biggest companies, then why isn’t the Dow advancing to new highs?
Clearly something is wrong. But what could it be? Much as I love
Barron’s, I trust the stock market more. If I read the stock market
correctly, it’s telling me that there is a surprise ahead. And that
surprise will be a reversal to the downside for the economy, plus a
collection of other troubles ahead.
About Dow Theory — First, we saw the recent April highs in the
Averages. Then we saw a plunge in both Averages to their May 7 lows –
Industrials to 10380.43, Transports to 4298.12, next a short rally. If
ahead, the two Averages turn down and violate their May 7 lows, that
would be the clincher. Such action would signal the certain resumption
of the primary bear market.

The interesting point that all do with this new fragrance campaign is that there is no obvious sexual connotations of the campaign, and it is so clean, simple and really makes me want to rush out and buy a bottle. Belgium goes closer to banning Islamic veils

BRUSSELS: Belgian lawmakers are expected to start debate over legislation to ban the face-covering Islamic veil in public spaces on Thursday, a day after French President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered similar legislation in France.
Belgium may become the first European country to ban the face covering Islamic veil. In March, a parliamentary committee backed a draft law to ban the veil. Now Belgium”s full lower house takes up the bill, which has the support of all the country”s major parties.
There are very few Muslim women in Belgium who wear the full-face veil. But the bill”s main author, lawmaker Daniel Bacquelaine of the liberal Reformist Movement Party, says the legislation is critical for social integration.
“We think that this measure is essential to promote living together in our society. I think we need common values and human rights. And I think if we live together, we have to be recognized. It is not possible to encounter each other if I cannot see the other”s face,” he said.
Bacquelaine says banning the veil is also a security measure against potential Muslim radicals. He says it is not intended to stigmatize the Muslim community, but to promote women”s rights.
Belgium is hardly the only European country mulling a veil ban. On Wednesday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered legislation banning the face veil in public spaces, despite misgivings it may be unconstitutional.
Presidential spokesman Luc Chatel said the ban should be generalized for all public spaces, but should not stigmatize Muslims. The legislation has drawn support from some Muslim lawmakers and women”s rights groups. Other European countries have considered similar legislation, but have not gone so far.
Wearing the full face-veil is deeply controversial in Europe, not least among Muslims.
But immigration expert Marco Martiniello of the University of Liege in Belgium, says many Belgian Muslims are united in opposing a veil ban.
“Even in that part of the Muslim community in which there is no support for niqab and burqa, the reaction is quite negative toward that law because it is seen as an additional stigmatization,” he said.
Martiniello believes the legislation is unnecessary. He says it reflects Europe”s inability to deal with its booming, Muslim community.
“Each European country seems to have a problem in finding the right balance between allowing space to Muslims and Islam and avoiding opening a new (door) to radicals,” said Martinello.
