ISLAMABAD: Government has hiked the price of sugar by Rs10 a kilogram at utility stores while sugar will be supplied to the provinces on cash from Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) as part of the strategy to overcome country-wide shortage of the commodity.

The Inter-ministerial Committee on sugar held a meeting with Federal Minister for Industries and Production Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani in the chair here on Monday.

The meeting fixed the sugar price at utility stores at Rs55 per kilo, keeping it Rs10 less than the price of the commodity in open market. The new price of sugar at utility stores has been made applicable with immediate effect.

It was decided that in future a gap of Rs10 will be maintained between sugar prices in open market and utility stores.

In a televised press conference just a day before the no-confidence vote, Raja Farooq Haider said: “I have decided to step down and have sent my resignation to the President.”

The incumbent premier has sent an advice for assembly session on August 06.

The no-confidence motion was moved in the legislative assembly by a breakaway faction of ruling Muslim Conference led by former premier Sardar Atique Ahmed.

He held Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo and Government of Pakistan responsible for political crisis in the AJK and said would support any other candidate for the premiership other than his rival Sardar Atique.

He also pointed out that the federal government shrunk AJK”s share in NFC and violated the Mangla Upraising agreement.

Last week, the Friends Group, comprising dissident legislators belonging to the ruling All Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conference, filed a no-confidence motion against AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider in the AJK Legislature seeking in-house change of leader of the house.

The Friends Group claimed to enjoy full support and backing of the required number of lawmakers, including those belonging to the opposition parties i.e. PPP, PML and MQM, in its no-confidence motion against the AJK premier.

The resolution of the no-confidence motion was submitted by Chaudhry Abdul Aziz, legislator belonging to the rival Friends Group in the ruling party, to Secretary AJK Legislative Assembly Syed Ashiq Hussain.

LAHORE: Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Raja Farooq Haider Friday warned the Government of Pakistani against taking any unconstitutional step in the legal matters of AJK.

Addressing the lawyers at Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA), he said any unconstitutional interference from Islamabad would also have implications on Pakistan.

Some steps taken by Islamabad are creating a split among the people of Kashmir, he said, but added for Kashmiris, Pakistan is like a mother, whom they cannot fight.

The AJP premier demanded Pakistan, after cleansing its only Constitution of distortions, should now address the grievances of Kashmiris.

The reference against AJK Chief Justice was sent as he was interfering in the matters of executive and administration, he said.

“I will sacrifice my own position for the Supremacy of Constitution,” he added.
