Designer Lagerfeld apologizes over Adele remark

PARIS: Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has apologized for calling British singer Adele “a little too fat”, saying he is a huge fan.

But the husky-voiced singer — due to make a much anticipated performance comeback at the Grammys on Sunday — says she has no problem with her weight.

“I’ve never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines. I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that,” she told People magazine in an interview.

“I’d lose weight if I was an actress and had to play a role where you’re supposed to be 40 pounds lighter, but weight has nothing to do with my career.

“I haven’t felt insecure about my figure. I wasn’t brought up like that,” she said in a People cover story on newsstands on Friday.

Adele, 23, whose album “21″ was the world’s biggest seller in 2011, is expected to dominate the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday where she has six nominations, including album and song of the year.

Lagerfeld, Chanel’s star designer, caused an uproar earlier this week when he told the free daily Metro newspaper in Paris that the “Someone Like You” singer was “a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.”

Influential U.S. fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone called for a boycott. “If you love Adele then boycott Chanel — Boo Karl,” Cutrone tweeted.

Lagerfeld apologized in a statement to the Metro newspaper, where he was acting as global guest editor when he made the remarks.

“I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought…She is my favourite singer and I am a great admirer of her,” he said.

Lagerfeld said he had lost more than 30 kilos (66 lbs) 10 years ago. “I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.” AGENCIES

Brazil fashion week kicks off

6d76579f87756 l.jpg Brazil fashion week kicks offSAO PAULO: Despite the arrival of some of the biggest names in the fashion and entertainment world, all eyes at the Winter 2011 fashion week that kicks off here are a new runway star: model Lea T.

Representing French brand Givenchy, the Brazilian model has become a rising figure on the global fashion stage thanks to high-profile appearances on the European market in recent months.

Lea T. now returns home to grace the fashion week runway for the first time as a leading figure, promising to be one of the most photographed models at the event in the hands of famed designer Alexandre Herchcovitch.

Latin America”s top fashion event, the 30th, twice annual Sao Paulo Fashion Week promises to showcase 31 home brands, and set the stage for next winter”s collection.

Among the highlights is the runway appearance walk of top model Gisele Bundchen, the Brazilian beauty who has become the world”s top-paid model, who is set to show off the latest creations of the brand Colcci.

Also at the event is US film star Ashton Kutcher, who arrived in the country late Thursday alongwith his actress wife Demi Moore.

“I”m ready for Brazil. Is Brazil is ready for me?” Kutcher wrote on his hugely popular Twitter account ahead of his arrival here.

Billionaire heiress Paris Hilton was also expected to take to the runway to model Brazilian fashion brand Triton, and singer Christina Aguilera was set to attend to promote a new clothing bearing her name.

Sao Paulo, which has held the fashion week since in 1996, has emerged as a key fixture on the fashion calender, showcasing mold-breaking designs from Brazil”s top fashion houses Ellus, Colcci, Maria Bonita, and leading designers such as Herchcovitch, Reinaldo Lourenco and Ronaldo Fraga.

The Brazilian city”s place alongside New York, Paris and Milan as a fashion capital has also demonstrated Brazil”s growing economic power.

Latin America”s biggest economy, ranked 10th in the world, is currently expanding at nine percent on an annual basis — almost as much as the global champion China.

The event meanwhile seeks to also promote Brazil”s lagging textile industry.

The spring 2012 collection will arrive at Sao Paulo”s second fashion week this year held in June, a perennial favorite for showcasing Brazil”s famed bikini beachware.

Fashion Week Woes Put Spotlight On Milan’s Influence

bdf5f4bc84luence Fashion Week Woes Put Spotlight On Milan’s InfluenceMilan has long claimed its place among the top fashion capitals of the world but calendar woes have fashionistas asking whether it is losing influence.

While top names like Giorgio Armani, Gucci and Versace gave their all at the autumn/winter 2010-2011 catwalk shows and won wide praise for their lines, the talk of fashion week has centered on the intensive schedule of its cramped calendar.

Organizers were left scrambling to fit the major names into four days out of the Feb. 24 – March 1 run after powerful fashion editor, Vogue’s Anna Wintour, reportedly said she planned to shorten her attendance to go to Paris fashion week and then to the Oscars in Los Angeles.

Both local and international press have written about the “Wintour effect” on the northern Italian city and how designers were bowing to the demands of the international press.

Mario Boselli, the chairman of Italy’s National Chamber of Fashion — who organizes Milan fashion week — said Italian designers often showed they were not conscious of their power “and instead give in to the pressure of the foreign press.”

“I think the big masons should speak up. We are smaller but we had to schedule our show accordingly with the calendar,” Maurizio Modica, one of the designers at Frankie Morello, told. “The influence of Anna Wintour? It’s a reality.”

Milan has long relied on its status of the same big name brands that have been around for decades and whose creations are lapped up around the world. But main rival fashion capitals New York and Paris have longer schedules for this season. Industry observers also noted that there have been few internationally recognized young designers to emerge here in the last few years.

PRACTICAL PROBLEMS

Many buyers and fashion reporters have complained about the practical problems of a shortened schedule, with shows running at least 30 minutes late. They said more shows were usually more punctual at the preceding London Fashion Week.

“It’s extremely hard and it’s very disappointing to have to fit so much into four days,” Marigay McKee, fashion and beauty director at Britain’s Harrods store said.

British fashion reporter Hilary Alexander said the short schedule was not fair on anybody.

“I don’t know why it has become so short, Milan is like an economic powerhouse for fashion and there are so many major brands here,” she said. “It would be nice to have a slightly longer schedule like we normally do..six, seven days.”

Wintour has been known to curtail her stay in Milan before as well as in Paris but the French capital has not changed its calendar as a result.

Several designers and businessmen have voiced concern that a short show week would reduce the strength of Italy’s fashion industry especially at a time when the economic crisis has hit demand. Turnover for the sector fell 15 percent last year to 56.5 billion Euros. An improvement is forecast for this year.

“The real problem is that a shorter calendar not only damages fashion shows but also the business,” Michele Norsa, CEO of Salvatore Ferragamo, told Reuters. “This creates a sense of anxiety for those who come here from abroad. We need to have more time for the shows and our business contacts.”

Boselli has promised a new calendar for the September shows with “five strong days”. While Wintour declined to speak with Reuters when approached at Milan fashion week, the editor of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani said the calendar was “awful.”

“It will last longer in the next season,” she said. “You always need to hit the bottom then come back up to float.”

Carlos Miele storms the runway Carlos Miele Storms The Runway:New York Fashion WeekBrazilian designer Carlos Miele debuted his Fall Collection at New York Fashion Week to rave reviews.
Miele, whose work is often compared to Diane von Furstenberg, unveiled a traditional Brazilian collection inspired by artisan techniques like patchwork, stitching, crochet, and leatherwork. Describing his collection, the designer said, It is a very rich collection. That is why I am doing the hair and make-up very clean, as it is pretty much about the collection, the clothes, because of a lot of details. I mix a lot of materials, over layers. The collection inspired with rush constructiv-ism, and how this movement is reflected in Brazilian architecture, painters – and brought this to what my work is now. We have beautiful colors, geometrical abstraction and prints and very architecture forms. The red-carpet-ready looks had bold color combinations, clingy silhouettes and plunging necklines.

When Irena was told she had won, she said “I can’t believe it!” She then proceeded to jump into Tim Gunn’s arms, as he came out to congratulate her on her win. Irena then went on to say that she is definitely proud of herself, as she did have some stiff competition.

Irina Shabayeva edged out runners-up Carol Hannah Whitfield and Althea Harper to take top honors on the show’s second consecutive all-female finale.

Irina Shabayeva impressed the show’s judges with an edgy collection of 13 looks shown at New York’s Fashion Week earlier this year. Japan fashion week begins

b1cc791a3850x142 Japan fashion week beginsJapan’s biannual Fashion Week opened, kicking off the Spring/Summer 2010 season’s collection from the nation’s top and budding designers. But while the designers such as Toshikazu Iwaya of the newly launched “Dress33″ brand showed an upbeat collection inspired from Pablo Picasso, there was little to be upbeat about the fashion business environment currently still in the throes of the global economic downturn.

However Iwaya, who said his asymmetric outfits were a tribute to the master of cubism, also said that the economic crisis was a chance to make his mark. Having opened several shops in the last year, he said people in these dark times are on the look out for something special, something inspiring. The organisers of the fashion week concur, adding that the week long fashion event which brings together over 54 different domestic and asian fashion houses, will hopefully be fertile ground for buyers looking to purchase something top quality but of good value.
