Preview: US face challenge as favourites v Slovenia

IRENE: The United States will be favourites to beat Slovenia on Friday (1400 GMT) and believe they can handle the pressure at Ellis Park.

A 1-1 draw with England was a creditable opening result for Bob Bradley”s team in Group C but will be forgotten if they slip up against a Slovenia side who beat Algeria in their opener.

“Going into a game as possible favourites would be different for us, especially in this World Cup, and that does pose a challenge… to know that you”re under pressure to get three points, or get a good result,” said defender Jay DeMerit.

“It”s a challenge. I think preparation is key, mindset as a team is key. It”s games like this that are going to get you to the next round, not the game against England,” he said.

Bradley is expected to stick with the same starting lineup as that which featured against England with goalkeeper Tim Howard having recovered from his bruised ribs.

With Slovenia likely to play a patient game and wait to break on the counter-attack, the match is likely to be, as Bradley himself noted, “something of a chess match”.

PLAY HARD

“We”re comfortable no matter what. We”re going to go out and play hard,” said Clint Dempsey, whose equaliser earned a point against England thanks to a howler by keeper Robert Green.

“We have this sense of togetherness about us where everybody is on the same page and we know that we all have the guy next to us who is going to put in the work,” he added.

Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek said they had analysed mistakes in a jittery first half against Algeria in an opening 1-0 win and knew dips in form could be costly versus stronger opponents.

“We have to improve our passing and finishing because the first 30 minutes against Algeria left a lot to be desired,” Kek told a news conference.

“The players were aware of that and took my objections the right way, that”s why they improved and clawed out a win.

“Advancing to the last 16 is in our hands now and I expect a fascinating battle against the Americans, we will have to be strong in every aspect to prevail.”

Kek is likely to stick to his preferred 4-4-2 formation with Valter Birsa and Andraz Kirm on the flanks while captain Robert Koren and Aleksandar Radosavljevic should operate in the middle.

Zlatko Dedic could make way for Zlatan Ljubijankic up front.

Preview: England need to re-establish credentials

CAPE TOWN: England face Algeria on Friday with bigger issues at stake than whether they can beat the north Africans to regain control of World Cup Group C.

If Fabio Capello”s team have any ambitions of advancing beyond their usual quarter-final terminus then beating Algeria, who lost 1-0 to Slovenia in their opener, must be a given.

England have never lost to African opposition but their manager must still answer the many questions swirling around his team and find a way to get his forwards scoring goals.

With top spot in the group likely to be decided on goal difference, and the runners-up set to face Germany in the second round, England need a big win to put them back on course for an easier last 16 meeting with Ghana, Serbia or Australia.

Their opening 1-1 draw with a well-organised United States team, particularly seen in the context of so many other major nations” stuttering starts, was not a terrible result.

But while Franz Beckenbauer”s claim that England have “gone backwards into the bad old days of kick and rush” seems harsh, their Italian manager does have to get his players back to the constructive approach that saw them cruise through qualifying.

Already missing injured captain Rio Ferdinand, England are now without his replacement Ledley King for Friday”s game – and possibly the tournament — with Jamie Carragher set to step in.

He came off the bench to replace King at halftime against the U.S. and formed a vocal, tough-tackling but far-from-pacy centre back partnership with former England captain John Terry.

Behind them Capello seems likely to keep faith with goalkeeper Robert Green, whose blunder handed Clint Dempsey the Americans” equaliser — though David James could come in.

BARRY RECALL

The manager will be delighted to be able to recall Gareth Barry, one of his favourites, to a holding role in midfield, pushing Steven Gerrard out to the left with licence to attack.

Up front, for all Wayne Rooney”s undoubted talents, he has not scored an international goal since last September, while Emile Heskey”s return of seven in 59 games tells its own story.

Peter Crouch, who came on as a substitute against the US, said that Capello was emphasising the positives.

“He told us he saw things in the first game that were encouraging and he has taken them and told us we should still believe in ourselves and what we are doing,” said the tall striker with an international return of 21 goals in 39 games.

“Hopefully, we will go on and do a lot better from now on,” he added. “We all know that and we have to make sure we get it right, starting against Algeria.”

Algeria coach Rabah Saadane is also set to stand behind his keeper Faouzi Chaouchi, after he allowed a speculative shot by Robert Koren to squeeze past him, giving Slovenia the points.

Having lost the match they targeted as their best chance for a win, Algeria are bracing themselves for a tough onslaught.

“They (England) are a super team, as I”ve said, among the favourites,” said Saadane. “It”s going to be a very, very difficult match for us but we have nothing to lose.”

Saadane is without Abdelkader Ghezzal, suspended for a red card after coming off the bench in the opener, but said he does not plan widespread changes, with 24-year-old midfielder Adlane Guedioura a possible starter to add dynamism going forward.

According to government sources, the inflow and outflow at the Lake is 4600 cusecs.

The Hunza-Gilgit section of Karakoram Highway which was closed owing to bad weather conditions, was kept open till 4pm yesterday.

Paris S/S 09: YSL

Back on the Paris runway, we have the YSL show. I must admit, when the rest of the fashion world applauded Pilati for his first collections, I was still a bit hesitant about them. It just wasn’t quite the Tom Ford era YSL style, I associated YSL with (that was the era that motivated me to become a hardcore business woman just so I can wear them!). It’s taken a while, but I think I’m finally warming up to Pilati! I am loving his minimalistic, oriental inspired collection. It is simple, wearable but still feminine and elegant.
ac0a6dd53dysl3 Paris S/S 09: YSLI am loving the subtle black prints and the more relaxed but still structured silhouette of the collection, which is still very flattering. The whole super cinched, fitted and tailored thing is getting old. This is modern and refreshing.
61178aa4deysl5 Paris S/S 09: YSLOne of the biggest thing on this runway are these lattice mesh shoes. The fashion world is loving this child of gladiators sandals and boots. Personally, I am not so sure. I didn’t like the whole gladiator thing to begin with. And if I think that boots with peep toes are unnatural, these are definitely out of my comfort zome. It kind of reminds me of those jello mesh flats that were popular a while back. I do like the metal lattice heels though. That is really modern and cool looking, just not the rest. Maybe it takes getting used to?

Paris S/S 09: Chanel

I am loving the SS09 Chanel collection. There is something quirky, modern and refreshing about it, that is still very Chanel (of course!).

The reinterpreted plaid pattern is a refreshing twist on the classic Chanel prints. The technique involved in creating some of the structures (i.e. above right), is also modern and chic.
8e11e4523aanel2 Paris S/S 09: ChanelThe evening wear were divine. I love the more relaxed silhouette throughout the collection- much more forgiving for all body types. The black dress here (left) is actually one of my favourites. The upper part, with the sheer fabric makes it modest yet subtly provocative at the same time- very classy and elegant. The white dress (right) is admittdely not the most flattering shape on the runway, but there is just something very intriguing about the play on volume and the delicate floral details here.
614984200aanel3 Paris S/S 09: ChanelThen there were beautiful tiered tulle dresses fit for a fairy princess. Ok, the cape (left) is a bit too much with that dress, but the bolero (also a hot item on this runway) is the perfect compliment to the heavily tiered dress on the right.
edf8e24010anel4 Paris S/S 09: ChanelOnto accessories- see what I mean by quirky, with this vertical classic flap bag (left)? The leather shopping bag (right), is perfect and very clever for the whole “street” theme of the show, but I hope they’re not planning to sell it in stores. Otherwise some misguided soul might just buy it and become a walking advertisement- and not even the good kind!
4aa7c3764banel5 Paris S/S 09: ChanelIt appears that the peep toe bootie (left) is definitely here to stay for another season or two…. I guess I better get used to it. It doesn’t look too weird here. And the feathers here (right) creates just the perfect dramatic effect for the runway, but they’re definitely not suitable for rainy/muddy/humid weather. Luckily, the shoes look gorgeous without the feathers as well, and I’m sure Karl will be commercial minded enough to produce them without the feathers for the stores (or maybe they will be attachable!).

One thing I’m unsure about though are the two tone stockings featured throughout the show. It looks a bit like Karl is trying to put a new spin on the much over done legging trend, but I don’t know, the spin is not that new and it cuts the model’s legs off in an unflattering way, making them look short. The stockings on his F/W 08 runway is way better.

d92817fe99di Taylor century puts pressure on BangladeshWicket Keeper batsman Brendan Taylor scored his maiden ODI hundred to put Zimbabwe as the favourites to win the fifth and final match at Chittagong.

Zimbabwe put into bat first were yet again in a hopeless situation at 113 for 7 but the Tigers had failed to take the one wicket that mattered which was of one down batsman Taylor. The right hander single handedly took Zimbabwe to a respectable 221 for 9 in the allotted 50 overs. Taylor remained unbeaten on 118 from 125 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes. Elton Chigumubra was the next highest scorer with 38.

Abdur Razzak, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah picked up three wickets each. Bangladesh have already sealed the series in their favour at 3-1.
