President Obama on Friday forcefully joined the national debate over construction of an Islamic complex near New York’s Ground Zero, telling guests at a White House dinner marking the holy month of Ramadan that opposing the project is at odds with American values.
Let me be clear, as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country, Obama said at a White House iftar dinner. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances and this is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable, he added.

Strong dust storm kills one in Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: Strong dust storm in the federal capital killed one and injured three and also damaged many vehicles, Geo News reported Wednesday.
The drizzle turned weather of federal capital pleasant breaking the prolonged heat-wave conditions.
The city temperature, which was above 40 degrees Celsius for last four days, was compelling residents to keep indoors saving themselves from the harsh affects of hot weather.
However, dust storm prior to the drizzle made people frightened as it was of high intensity.
Storm before the drizzle was horrible as it brought trees and billboards down.
An official of Met Office said that the intensity of winds was recorded 70 knot or 130 km per hour.
According to met analysis, a fresh westerly wave affecting upper parts of the country on Wednesday night will cause dust storm and scattered rain in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab, Islamabad and Kashmir during next 2-3 days.
The change in weather will decrease intensity of the heat wave conditions prevailing across the country.
However, in Sindh and Balochistan, mainly hot and dry weather is expected whereas gusty winds may occur during next 24 hours.
President urges need to enhance trade ties with Africa
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has stressed upon the need to enhance trade relations with the African countries to realize their real potential keeping in view vast population of the African continent and the market opportunities available there.
The President said this during his interaction with ambassadors and high commissioners belonging to 11 African countries who had been invited to Aiwan-e-Sadr on Wednesday for a meeting to consider ways and means of further bolstering relations with their countries.
The President during the meeting suggested creation of a small caucus representing the African embassies in Islamabad and relevant officers of the ministries for suggesting ways and means to move forward on further improving trade and commercial ties.
The President said the African countries can greatly benefit from Pakistan’s experience and expertise in the fields of infrastructure development, agriculture, banking and information technology.
He said Pakistan’s education sector, particularly professional institutes provide excellent opportunities and venues to the students belonging to the African countries to learn modern sciences and arts and there is need to strengthen and enhance existing exchanges in this area.
Gunmen kill police in Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: Unknown gunmen stormed a police checkpost in federal capital Islamabad, killing at least one policeman and leaving another critically injured late on Wednesday night, Geo news reported.
According to details as reached here, the incident took place at 2:45am on Islamabad Highway, which falls under the limits of Shehzad Town police station when police deputed at checkpost indicated unidentified bike riders to stop but instead, they opened fire on police.
Miscreants succeeded to flee having abandoned their motorcycle after injured policeman retaliated their onslaught.
The deceased police constable was identified as Shamshad Akber Cheema who succumbed to injuries on the spot while his colleague constable Haroon sustained injuries amid ambush.
Police claimed to have seized motorcycle and launched probe into tragic incident.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan News: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has ruled out contention between army and government, saying that all the institutions are working in their limits.
Talking to media after visiting the houses of Constable Ilyas and Constable Aftab, who died in Melody Market suicide blast in Islamabad, Gilani rejected the notion regarding deadlock in scrapping of 17th amendment, adding that he was 200 percent sincere to do away with this constitutional distortion. The premier said that no clash would arise if army, judiciary and parliament work in limits. He noted that public backed the government, adding that people have elected them for five years and they would be accountable only before public in this regard. Replying to a question, the PM said that the US base has not been finished rather shifted from Sihala.
He said compensation of Rs2million will be given to the families of martyred officials of Islamabad police and Frontier Constabulary, besides giving jobs to their children. Moreover, 2,000 flats would also be constructed for police in federal capital and 0.3million rupees would be given for their children’s study, he added.

David Petraeus Arrives Islamabad
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan News: US Central Command head, General David Petraeus reached Islamabad on Monday.
Another US military commander General Mike Mullen has also been expected in federal capital today.
General David Petraeus will hold meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Army Chief Gen Ashfaque Pervez Kayani.
Petraeus is expected to discuss the new US Afghan strategy with Pakistani officials.
It is the first tour of a US top official to Pakistan after President Obama unveiled his new Afghan policy.

5.6 magnitude quake jolts Islamabad
Minor tremor jolts federal capital Islamabad, Mansehra and northern areas on Sunday morning, a private TV quoted metrological sources as reporting.
The quake jolts were felt at 9:33am while its epic center was 292 kilometers away from Balakot division, met office said. The magnitude of earthquake was 5.6 as recorded at Richter scale, sources added.
