87c6033bc3round1 Serena, Federer Reach Australian Open 4th RoundMELBOURNE: Serena Williams moved a step closer to successfully defending her Australian Open title and extracted some family revenge Saturday with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro.

Last year, Suarez Navarro beat Venus Williams in the second round.

Serena Williams’ only real difficulty at Hisense Arena was in closing the first set, needing eight set points in a game that went to deuce 13 times and lasted longer than the previous five games combined.

Top-ranked Roger Federer had a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 31 Albert Montanes to register his 50th win at Melbourne Park, where he has won three of his record 15 Grand Slam singles titles.

Federer’s potential quarterfinal rival Nikolay Davydenko extended his impressive winning run with a 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 30 Juan Monaco of Argentina.

Sixth-seeded Davydenko counts wins against Federer and No. 2 Rafael Nadal at last year’s World Tour Final and this season’s opening event at Doha among his 12-match winning streak. The 28-year-old Russian has never gone beyond the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, and his best runs at a major ended in semifinal defeats at the French and U.S. Opens.

Women’s No. 1 Williams, who has won the Australian title each odd-numbered year since beating sister Venus in the 2003 final, will next play No. 13 and local hope Sam Stosur, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Italian Alberta Brianti.

She finished of Suarez Navarro, a quarterfinalist here last year, on her third match point in 1 hour, 21 minutes.

Venus Williams faced Australian Casey Dellacqua later Saturday.

No. 7 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus had a 6-0, 6-2 win over Italy’s Tathiana Garbin in an early match to set up a fourth-round match against No. 9 Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who beat Argentina’s Gisela Dulko 6-1, 7-5.

No. 3-ranked Novak Djokovic, who beat Federer in the semifinals en route to his 2008 title here, was set to play Denis Istomin later Saturday.

Defending champion Nadal also was upset with his game, although he had a victory to show for it — a 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 decision over Germany’s Philipp Kohlscreiber at night.

Juan Martin del Potro, who had a surprise win over Federer in the U.S. Open final last September, advanced Friday night along with No. 5 Andy Murray, Americans John Isner and Andy Roddick and Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.

Nadal will next play Ivo Karlovic, who downed Ivan Ljubicic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7), and could play a quarterfinal against Murray, a 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 winner over Florent Serra of France.

Qureshi was at his serve-and-volleying best in the round-of-32 match as he and Cerritani cruised to victory against Federer and Chidudinelli 6-4, 6-3 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the $2.6 million ATP tournament.
Experts call it a great boost for Pakistani tennis which could prove a mile stone in Pakistan’s tennis history.

The Pak-Americanpair will now play tournament first-seeds Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia) in the quarter-finals.

Switzerland loses doubles Without Roger Federer

2df5c9409d49x249 Switzerland loses doubles Without Roger FedererGENOA, Italy: With Roger Federer sitting out, Switzerland lost a doubles match to Italy in a Davis Cup playoff and had its lead cut to 2-1.

Simone Bolelli and Potito Starace beat Marco Chiudinelli and Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (3) Saturday.

In Thursday’s draw, Federer was selected to team with Wawrinka, reviving the team that won the Olympic doubles title last year. But Switzerland captain Severin Luthi decided to rest Federer in favor of the 117th-ranked Chiudinelli.

“We all know he’s had a very heavy schedule over the last days and weeks, so we preferred that he rest today and be ready for tomorrow,” Luthi said.

Federer lost in five sets to Juan Martin del Potro in the U.S. Open final Monday, and he is still getting over jet leg from his trip across the Atlantic.

“For sure to have Roger on the team is always an advantage, but we knew we had a chance with this team, the Italians just played better today,” Luthi said. “(Federer) has no problem. You can expect him to play for sure tomorrow.”

Federer can seal the tie with a win over Andreas Seppi in the first of Sunday’s reverse singles matches on the red clay courts at the Valletta Cambiaso club.

The winner of the best-of-five series will return to the World Group next year.

Wawrinka beat Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 and Federer defeated Bolelli 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in Friday’s opening singles matches.

“We were talking about the solutions for (Federer) and the worst-case scenario would have been if we lose in five sets and then he would have to play three days in a row,” Luthi said. “It was better that he rested today and be ready for tomorrow.

“It’s not for sure that if Roger had played we would have won the doubles,” the Swiss captain added. “We had a strong team on the court today. It’s not like we were saying we’re giving this point to Italy. They were just stronger today.”

Italy also made a change in its doubles team, with Bolelli replacing Fabio Fognini alongside Starace.

Wawrinka was broken four times and also lost two points on his serve in the tiebreaker.

“For sure it was not my best doubles today,” Wawrinka said, adding that he and Chiudinelli struggled to play in unison, having never played together in the Davis Cup.

The Italians were pleased by the decision to rest Federer.

“We were a bit surprised he wasn’t playing. But it gave us a better chance of winning,” Bolelli said. “We played well and showed that without Federer we’re capable of winning in straight sets.”

US Open mens final 2009

423315112dl 2009 US Open mens final 2009US Open mens final 2009, NEW YORK: Roger Federer knows he cannot underestimate Juan Martin del Potro as he goes for his sixth successive U.S. Open title on Monday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Federer, 28, has beaten del Potro in all six career meetings but the 6-foot-6 Argentine has been one of the hottest players in the world during the hardcourt season.

The two met at this year’s French Open semi-final and Federer escaped with a five-set win en route to the title. The Swiss could see del Potro was finding his game.

“Every month he was getting better,” said Federer. “He was hitting his serves better, from the baseline he was getting more confident.

“He knows much more now today what he needs to do on the tennis court.”

The 20-year-old Del Potro ruined for Open fans an anticipated Federer match-up with Rafael Nadal, by blitzing the Spaniard 6-2 6-2 6-2 in their semi-final on Sunday.

“I’m very happy to beat Rafa in straight sets, played an unbelievable match,” said Del Potro, who admitted the Open is his favorite tournament. “Of course it’s great for me and for my future being in finals.

“I’m very close to do it. I’ve always dreamed of this moment.”

The Argentine is a dangerous hardcourt player, one who hits the ball flat but extremely hard with sharp angles.

“Del Potro had a great match today against Rafa, because Rafa doesn’t give you any easy matches,” said Federer, shooting for his 16th grand slam win. “So for him to come through the way he did, it’s, to say the least, impressive.

“That’s why he’s not to be underestimated.”

Federer is the heavy favorite but Novak Djokovic, who lost to the Swiss 7-6 7-5 7-5 on Sunday, thinks it would be foolish to overlook the sixth-ranked Argentine.

“Del Potro is showing his best tennis in last couple of months, and you’ve got to give him credit for that,” he said. “He’s still a young guy, but moving extremely moving well for his height and is an all around player.

“He has a good chance against Roger if he plays his best. Why not?”
