Pak fisherman died in Indian jail; protest in Karachi

KARACHI: Pakistani fishermen held a demonstration against the killing of their fellow during the detention in an Indian jail Monday.

The demonstration also held sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly building and then moved to Karachi Press Club. The protest was led by the chief of Pakistan Fisher folk Forum, Mohammad Ali Shah.

Ibrahim died in an Indian jail during the detention.

Ibrahim’s mother and sister demanded the government to ensure the safe return of Ibrahim’s brother who is also held in Indian jail.

Spot-fixing controversy: Umpires thought Amir no-ball was tactical

Lord Test umpires Tony Hill and Billy Bowden rejected the spot-fixing allegations. The umpires believe that one of Mohammad Amir’s colossal no-balls in the Lord’s Test was deliberate, but only as a means to intimidate the batsman Jonathan Trott.
Hill said he and his fellow New Zealander Bowden had no inkling about any possible spot-fixing, but the extent of the no-ball raised questions in their minds about whether it was intentional. He further added that Asifs delivery was much less of a concern as he stepped over by only a narrow margin.
We never suspected a thing, Hill told the Dominion Post. There had been the big overstep in particular and in our minds that was more a deliberate overstep to have a go at Trott, who had been batting so well.
Billy and I chatted about that and thought it seemed deliberate, especially as it was dropped in short. But it all seemed to be one of those things that fast bowlers have been known to do to get an advantage.

Nadal edges closer to first U.S. Open final

NEW YORK: For the third year in a row, Rafa Nadal is through to the semi-finals of the U.S. Open. The one title he needs to complete his grand slam collection is now tantalisingly close.

Nadal booked his place in the last four by thrashing his fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-5 6-3 6-4 on Thursday. The pair are supposedly great friends, so pity Nadal’s enemies.

The world number one has never made it to the final at Flushing Meadows before, more often a victim of the hardcourts than his rivals, but it only seems a matter of time.

The prospect of the ultimate grand slam final is looming larger than ever. Nadal and Roger Federer have already played each other in the finals at Wimbledon, Australia and Paris but never in New York.

The pair still need to win their semi-finals on Saturday but it will take a monumental performance to stop either of
