ABU DHABI: Pakistani bowlers are not allowing South Africa to score easily as they have already taken four quick wickets at the end of 35th over in the second innings on Tuesday.

Despite losing Misbah-ul-Haq (77) off the first delivery of the day, Pakistan reached 434 at the close of the first innings. Abdul Rehman scored a career-best 60 runs and Tanveer Ahmed bagged 30, while Muhammad Sami remained unbeaten at 2.

By the break, Pakistan trailed South Africa’s first innings total of 584-9 declared by 172 runs.

Misbah was trapped leg-before by paceman Dale Steyn (4-98), obliging Pakistan to score 68 off the last three wickets to avoid a follow-on.

Rehman added 36 for the eighth wicket with Umar Gul, who scored 21, to bring Pakistan closer.

DUBAI: Mohammed Hafeez’s half-century guided Pakistan to 144 for two in reply to South Africa’s first innings 380 on the second day of the first test on Saturday.

Opener Hafeez slammed a rapid 60 off 89 balls as Pakistan ended the day 236 runs behind.

Hafeez and Taufeeq Umar (42) put on 105 for the first wicket after taking advantage of some wayward new-ball bowling from Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.

The duo brought up the 50 at a run-a-ball but were more circumspect after that.

Hafeez was the first to depart when he was caught at mid-on off left-arm spinner Paul Harris. Umar fell six runs later when he was trapped leg before by Morkel.

Earlier, South Africa’s first innings ended 26 minutes after lunch when off-spinner Saeed Ajmal trapped Morkel leg before for 10.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari said Thursday the world must act swiftly to stop militants exploiting the country’s devastating floods and to prevent social unrest.

Addressing a joint press conference along with US Senator John Kerry here at Chaklala Air Base after visiting flood affected areas of Jampur, President Zardari said to the world “We need to address that, all of us rapidly, to avoid their impatience boiling over or people exploiting that impatience.”

President Zardari said the world is slowly and gradually realizing that it is not a one day job, it is not a one country issue, it is an huge problem and its a huge catastrophe adding “I think the world is standing with us.”

Swann double checks Pakistan’s progress

LONDON: Graeme Swann once more took wickets early in his spell to leave Pakistan 111 for four at lunch on the second day of the third Test at The Oval here on Thursday.

That meant the tourists were 122 runs behind England’s first innings 233.

Off-spinner Swann, with only his second ball Thursday, had recalled opener Yasir Hameed caught behind for his overnight score of 36.

And Swann then removed stubborn nightwatchman Wahab Riaz for 27 when the impressive debutant was lbw on the sweep to the first ball of the bowler’s second spell.

Swann, who took two wickets for seven runs in 24 balls, had figures at lunch of two for 12 in seven overs.

Riaz, who bats right-handed but is a left-arm quick, resisted for nearly two hours after leading the attack with five for 63 after Pakistan lost the toss on Wednesday.

NOTTINGHAM: Pakistan were bowled out for 182 in reply to England”s first innings 354, a deficit of 172, on the third day of the first Test at Trent Bridge here on Saturday.

Umar Gul was a Test-best 65 not out after last man Mohammad Asif was run out by Eoin Morgan”s direct hit from cover for nought. James Anderson, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Friday, took five wickets for 54 runs in overcast conditions ideally suited to his swing bowling.

England lose the wicket of captain Andrew Strauss in at the start of second innings after Pakistan are dismissed for 182 following Umar Gul”s unbeaten 65.

Earlier, Pakistan began the day’s play needed nine runs to avoid follow-on. Umer Gul while playing aggressively not only averted follow-on but also completed his maiden test half century. He was remained unbeaten at 65 runs.
