Kuznetsova opens French Open defense with easy win”
The pursuit for the Women’s French Open title 2010 got underway on a warm Sunday afternoon in Paris when the defending champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova walked on to Court Philippe Chatrier, and began her title defense against the number 34 ranked Romanian, Sorana Cirstea.

It was expected to be a tricky match for Kuznetsova, who having experienced a bumpy clay court season so far would have been hoping for an easy victory over the 20-year old Cirstea to regain some of her confidence. Cirstea, on the other hand, was coming into the tournament with some wins under her belt and a semifinal appearance at Estoril.

Kuznetsova got off to a shaky start, making too many errors and went down 2-0 after she served a double fault to give the Romanian the first break of the match. Cirstea consolidated the service break to take a lead of 3-0 against her experienced opponent. At this point it looked like the Russian was in for a tough fight against the youngster whom she had last played in a tight match at the U.S Open in 2008. But it was a matter of time before the champion found her range and came alive in the fifth game of the match when Cirstea was serving at 3-1, 40-0. Kuznetsova hit three forehand winners in a row to bring the game to deuce. She started playing aggressive tennis and drew errors out of the Romanian to break back and brought the match back on serve at 3-2.

TTP behind failed New York attack: US

WASHINGTON: The United States has evidence that the Pakistani Taliban was behind the failed attempt to detonate a car bomb in the heart of New York City, US Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday.

“We”ve now developed evidence that shows that the Pakistani Taliban was behind the attack,” Holder said on ABC television”s Sunday current affairs talk show “This Week.”

“We know that they helped facilitate it. We know that they probably helped finance it, and that he was working at their direction,” he said.

Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani born US citizen, was pulled off a plane to Dubai and arrested Monday for allegedly leaving a sport utility vehicle rigged to explode in New York”s Times Square just over a week ago.

Holder”s comments came as the New York Times reported that the United States warned Pakistan it must crack down on Islamic extremists or face severe consequences.

General Stanley McChrystal, the US commander in Afghanistan, urged Pakistan”s General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in Islamabad on Friday to quickly begin a military offensive against the Pakistani Taliban and Al-Qaeda in North Waziristan.

John Brennan, the White House deputy national security adviser, echoed Holder”s charges, pointing the finger at the Pakistani Taliban in an interview with CNN.

“It looks like he was working on behalf of the TTP, the Pakistani Taliban,” Brennan said.

“This group is closely allied with Al Qaeda. This is something that we”re taking very seriously.”
