Pakistan beat England by 10 wickets in first test

DUBAI: Paceman Umar Gul took 4-63 to help Pakistan beat the world’s best Test team, England, by 10 wickets in the first Test inside three days here on Thursday, gaining a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The 27-year-old fast bowler dismissed Andrew Strauss (six) before lunch and then accounted for Alastair Cook (five) and Kevin Pietersen (nought) in his hostile nine-over first spell on a spin-friendly Dubai Stadium pitch.

Spinners Abdul Rehman (3-37) and Saeed Ajmal (3-42) — his second 10-wicket haul in Tests — supplemented Gul to help Pakistan bundle out England for 160.

Pakistan notched the required 15 runs in 3.4 overs to hand England their first defeat in 10 Tests, since losing to Australia at Perth in the 2010 Ashes.

England’s batsmen, wrecked by Ajmal’s career-best 7-55 in their first innings of 192, were again clueless against the spin and played some rash shots as they sought to score runs on the pace of Gul.

Jonathan Trott top-scored with 49, but fell to an irresponsible shot, trying to force a short delivery from Gul and being caught by wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal, who finished the match with seven catches.

Trott, who passed the boundary of 2,000 runs when he reached 18 in his 24th Test, hit six boundaries during his 111-ball knock but became Gul’s 150th wicket in his 41st Test.

England had another disastrous start as Strauss was adjudged caught behind, pushing Gul to the leg side and seeing the ensuing edge well taken by the wicket-keeper.

Strauss instantly challenged the verdict but was left to trudge off the field after television umpire Steve Davis of Australia upheld the original decision.

Soon after the lunch break, Gul produced a sharp rising delivery that caught Cook in two minds as the left-hander gloved it to Adnan, who had no trouble in gathering it.

Kevin Pietersen, who has yet to score big on tour, made it 25-3 when he hooked a Gul bouncer straight into the hands of deep square-leg fielder Abdul Rehman, leaving England in more trouble at 25-3.

Ajmal then got in on the act when he trapped Ian Bell plumb in front of the wicket for four.

Bell wasted England’s second referral as television replays showed he was hit on the back leg, in line with the stumps.

Rehman ended a fifth-wicket partnership of 39 by dismissing Eoin Morgan (14) caught behind, while Ajmal trapped Matt Prior to leave England at 87-7.

Stuart Broad (17) and Graeme Swann (39) delayed the inevitable by putting on 48 for the eighth wicket before Rehman dismissed Broad and Chris Tremlett off successive deliveries.

Ajmal took the last wicket by getting Swann caught, much to the delight of his team-mates and the few hundred people in the stands.

In the morning, Adnan had boosted Pakistan’s lead with a gutsy second Test half-century. Adnan scored a career-best 61, adding another 50 runs after Pakistan resumed at 288-7.

Adnan, who hit eight boundaries during his 129-ball knock, put on a 30-run stand for the ninth wicket with Ajmal, who made 12. His previous best of 53 came against Bangladesh in Dhaka last month.

Swann had Adnan stumped to finish with figures of 4-107.

The second Test starts in Abu Dhabi from January 25, while the third will again be played here from February 3-7. AGENCIES

LONDON: England eased to an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh on the final day of the first Test on
Monday after Steven Finn captured five wickets in an innings in his first Test at Lord”s.

Finn, 21, who made his debut on the two-Test tour of Bangladesh in March, finished with five for 87 from 24 overs of accurate, probing pace bowling from the Pavilion End. He took four for 100 in the first innings.

Set 160 to win in two full sessions, England reached their target in the last over before tea.

Captain Andrew Strauss began at breakneck speed with four boundaries off the first two overs and reached his half-century from as many balls. After making 83 in the first innings on his return to the England side he was out for 82 from 88 balls, edging a catch behind off his opposite number Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh lost their remaining five wickets in the morning for only 54 runs, a disappointing performance following their exuberant batting on Sunday which looked likely to salvage a draw after they had lost each of their previous six Tests against England.

Finn struck three times in 15 balls after play resumed on a chilly, overcast morning with Bangladesh on 328 for five, removing Shakhib (16), Junaid Siddique (74) and Mushfiqur Rahim (0) in consecutive overs,

Shakib guided a simple catch to Eoin Morgan at cover point and Siddique”s patient innings ended after more than four hours when he was deceived by a slower delivery and lobbed the ball to Tim Bresnan at mid-off. Mushfiqur edged an excellent ball moving away off the pitch to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

Bresnan took his first wicket when Rubel Hossain (4) edged a low catch to Strauss at first slip and he ended the innings when Mahmudullah was caught behind by Prior for 19.

Bangladesh, replying to India’s modest 243, slumped from their overnight score of 59-3 to 118-6 in the shortened morning session of the third day’s play.

Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on eight and Mohammad Mahmudullah was on 14, with Bangladesh trailing by 125 runs with four wickets in hand.

Play was delayed for the third successive day due to dense fog over this coastal city which permitted 63 of the stipulated 90 overs on the first day and just 24.5 overs on the second day.

Bangladesh added nine runs to their overnight score when seamer Ishant Sharma had former captain Mohammad Ashraful caught in the slips by Rahul Dravid for two.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan cracked four boundaries in his 17, but his aggressive intentions did not last long.

The left-hander attempted to glide Zaheer Khan over point but India’s stand-in captain Virender Sehwag jumped in the air at gully to pick up a sharp chance.

Raqibul Hasan (17) was the third batsman to fall in the morning session, edging a lifting delivery from Shanthakumaran Sreesanth to wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik.

The second and final Test of the short series will start in Dhaka on January 24.

25c198c81200 IND vs SL 3rd ODI, India won by 7 wicketsCUTTACK: Sachin Tendulkar hit a solid 96 not out to power India to an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the third one-day international here on Monday.

The opener cracked 13 fours in his 104-ball knock to help India achieve a 240-run target with more than seven overs to spare in the day-night game for a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. ( Watch Live Cricket Scores )

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja played a crucial role in restricting Sri Lanka to a modest total, finishing with a career-best 4-32 off 10 tight overs. He was named man of the match.

Sri Lanka were on course for a big total when they reached 165-1 in the 23rd over before losing their last nine wickets for 74 in a dramatic collapse, sparked by Jadeja.

India made a brisk start, with stand-in captain Virender Sehwag smashing a 28-ball 44 with nine fours in a 55-run stand for the opening wicket with Tendulkar.

Sehwag led the team in the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was banned for two matches for a slow over-rate during his team’s three-wicket defeat in the previous game in Nagpur.

India capitalised on the start as Tendulkar added 72 for the second wicket with Gautam Gambhir (32) and 73 for the unfinished fourth wicket with Dinesh Karthik (36 not out) to steer his team home.

Jadeja led India’s fightback with a disciplined spell. He bowled well-set opener Upul Tharanga (73) before dismissing Chamara Kapugedera (15), Nuwan Kulasekara (10) and Ajantha Mendis (six).

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was the other bowler to impress, conceding 29 off nine overs for one wicket.

In-form opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who smashed brisk centuries in the last two matches, helped Sri Lanka get off to an explosive start with an 18-ball 41 as the visitors raced to 65 off just 6.2 overs.

Dilshan, who survived a run-out chance on 36, was caught by wicket-keeper Karthik off a mistimed pull off seamer Ashish Nehra after hitting 10 fours in his impressive cameo.

There was no respite for India as Tharanga and skipper Kumar Sangakkara (46) put on 100 for the second wicket to raise their team’s hopes of posting a big total.

Tharanga cracked one six and six fours in his 81-ball knock.
