Mines, bombs killing more Afghan civilians: ICRC

KABUL: Bombs and mines planted by the Taliban are killing and maiming increasing numbers of civilians in southern Afghanistan, as the war against the insurgents intensifies, the Red Cross said Thursday.
The Mirwais hospital in Kandahar, supported by the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), had seen admissions with mine injuries rise in January and February “by 30-40 percent compared with the same period in 2009″.
“The ICRC-supported Mirwais regional hospital in Kandahar has admitted a growing number of weapon-wounded patients arriving from Helmand province,” it said.
“Mirwais hospital treated 51 patients injured by the makeshift weapons in March alone, far above the average number for the month.”
Homemade bombs, called improvised explosive devises (IEDs), are responsible for the vast majority of civilian and military deaths and injuries in Afghanistan”s long war against Taliban insurgents, now in its ninth year.
Military intelligence officers have said the Taliban are skilled at adapting the bombs — cheap and easy to make — to the ever-heavier vehicles used by international troops, some packing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms) of explosives.
So far this year, 157 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, most of them by IEDs, compared with a total of 520 for 2009.
