TEHRAN: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged Palestinians to keep up their armed struggle against Israel a day after Israeli and Palestinian leaders agreed to continue talks on a U.S.-backed peace deal.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who hosted in Washington the first session of talks between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, voiced confidence that this latest attempt to bring peace to the region could succeed where so many others have failed.

Ahmadinejad said that the talks, seeking to end a conflict that has boiled for six decades, would once again fail. He criticised some Muslim leaders for not providing all-out support to the Palestinians in their revolt against Israel.

“The Palestine’s issue cannot be resolved through talks with the enemies of the Palestinian nation. Resisting is the only

TEHRAN: Iran would retaliate by striking Israel’s nuclear facility if Israel attacked its nuclear activities, armed forces chief of staff Hassan Firouzabadi said on Friday.

“Our developed weapons can hit any part of the Zionist regime (Israel) … We hope not to be forced to attack their nuclear facility,” Firouzabadi told the semi-official Mehr news agency.

Iran does not recognise Israel, which it calls the “Zionist regime.” Israel regards Iran’s nuclear programme as a threat to its existence.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in a live broadcast at Tehran University marking the annual Al Quds (Jerusalem) Day, told Israel to leave Iran alone.

“I want to say that not only the Zionists, but even their masters are smaller than to lay a finger on the Iranian nation and its rights,” he said.

NEW DELHI: India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar was on Friday awarded the honorary rank of group captain by the chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for his contribution to cricket.

Tendulkar, 37, was conferred the honour by Air Chief Marshall Pradeep Naik, amid loud applause from fellow officers at a ceremony in the Indian capital.

“It was wishful thinking (that I would be part of the armed forces) and it has come true today. I’m extremely proud to be a part of the IAF. So dream, because dreams do come true,” Tendulkar said after being inducted.

Naik said he hoped Tendulkar’s induction would inspire India’s youth to join its armed forces.

“Sachin’s association will help in spreading awareness about our force,” he said.

Tendulkar is the first sportsperson to be conferred a rank by the IAF and the first personality without an aviation

Pak-US partnership will deliver common goals of security: Patterson

JACOBABAD: US Ambassador in Pakistan Anne W. Patterson on Sunday said that America”s offer of a long-term partnership with Pakistan is tangible and “It is our hope that this partnership will deliver our common goals of security and prosperity, in the region and throughout the world.”

Pakistanis and Americans are working together to build a better world, “We all aspire to leave as our legacy,” she said while addressing the handing over ceremony of latest version of F-16 aircraft to Pakistan Air Force (PAF) at newly upgraded Air Base Shahbaz.

She said that Pakistan and the United States share a deep and broad partnership, which is growing to encompass nearly every element of government-to-government cooperation.

Under the Strategic Dialogue established by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, she said, the two nations are working together on economic development, trade and energy, health care, education, science and technology and agriculture.

“Our governments share a vision of partnership today which is unprecedented in the history of our bilateral relationship,” she said.

It both reflects America”s long-term commitment to Pakistan as an important ally and partner and “is a testament to the shared vision of our democratically elected governments,” she added.

The US Ambassador said that an important element of Pakistan-US relationship is strong and a growing security partnership, through which the two countries are working to make this region secure, stable and peaceful.

She recalled that four years ago, the United States and the Government of Pakistan had signed a Letter of Agreement for the acquisition of 18 new F-16 aircraft by Pakistan to support this country”s counterterrorism efforts.

“I am glad to be here today to witness the induction of the first three of these aircraft into the Pakistan Air Force in an event which begins yet another cycle of fulfillment in America”s commitments to Pakistan,” the US envoy said.

The induction of these advanced F-16s is a historic milestone for US-Pakistan relations – “both a symbolic and a tangible demonstration of our strong partnership” and the US intent to stand beside Pakistan over the long-term as an important ally and friend, Patterson said.

“Our commitment does not end with the delivery of these aircraft. The United States will continue to support the Pakistan Air Force through training and munitions procurement, and through updates to the 45 F-16s in the Pakistan Air Force”s existing fleet,” she added.

The US Ambassador said that she was impressed by the skills of Pakistani pilots as they have prepared to fly the F-16 aircraft in defense of Pakistan. “But Americans know that extraordinarily powerful weapons alone cannot strengthen this or any other nation. The strength of our economies and our institutions and our people also are key elements of national power.”
