Thai soldier killed in anti-govt protest

BANGKOK: Thai security forces stopped anti- government protesters from rallying north of the capital in clashes that killed one soldier, raising tensions in a seven- week standoff that has paralyzed Bangkok’s commercial center.
One soldier was shot dead and two were injured in the skirmish, police official Worapong Chiewprecha said in a televised briefing last night. Seventeen protesters were also wounded after authorities opened fire to prevent a convoy of about 5,000 people from traveling to a fresh-food market north of Bangkok, he said.
The incident may add pressure on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to scatter demonstrators who have disrupted businesses and irked residents by occupying a district since April 3. The country’s worst political violence in 18 years has now resulted in the deaths of 27 people this month.
“The situation has been aggravated to the point where the government has to do something, either disperse them or negotiate,” said Somjai Phagaphasvivat, a lecturer at Bangkok’s Thammasat University. “The protesters are on the defensive and they know the cost of resistance is getting higher every day.”
Thailand’s SET index fell 1.6 percent as overseas investors posted their biggest net selling in five months, making it Asia’s second-worst performer in April after the benchmark in Shanghai. Thai stocks have risen 2 percent for the year compared with a 4.1 percent gain for the MSCI Asia Pacific Index.
Security forces arrested 14 protesters and found a bag with 62 M-79 grenades left by another demonstrator who escaped, Anon Jarayapan, an air force commander, said in a televised broadcast. The clash showed the government’s aim “to control any law- breaking,” spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn told reporters.
Authorities ordered the closure of roads around the main protest site to isolate the group, the Bangkok Post reported, citing unidentified officials. Police will stop people and weapons from getting to the site, though supplies will be allowed to pass, the newspaper said.
A grenade attack last week on an elevated train line station next to the protest site left one person dead, and 25 died in an army crackdown on April 10. The government and protesters blame each other for the casualties.
Soldiers carrying rifles were stationed yesterday on Silom and Sukhumvit roads, Bangkok business arteries that connect with the cordoned-off protest site. Water cannon trucks and riot police are also positioned in the area.

Nov 10 Is The Day Most Brit Women Start Christmas Dieting:Today is the day when majority of Brit women will start dieting to get in shape for the annual Christmas party in the office, according to a survey.
The poll of 3,000 women revealed that six out of 10 women choose November 10 as the day to begin dieting in a bid to fit into their glitzy outfit.
While the average dieter aims to lose 10lb, but one in 10 will skip the odd meal in a bid to reach their target.
Fourteen per cent buy their party outfit in a size too small thinking they will fit into it by the time the big event arrives.
But more than half of these women will have to buy an emergency outfit after failing to lose the weight in time.
However, much to their agony, 21 per cent of women put all the weight they lose back on by the New Year.
A spokesman for British Lion eggs, which carried out the research, advised women to be careful when trying to diet.
“Simply cutting out food won’t work. The best way to lose weight is to eat sensibly and have three balanced meals a day, particularly breakfast,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying. (ANI)

Imran Khan Operated Upon To Remove Intestinal Obstruction:Severe pain in Imran Khan’s intestine on Monday left the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf office-bearers and workers in shock. The party chief was operated upon in Lahore and then advised some days rest in the hospital.
From England, his ex-wife Jemima and two sons were among those who telephoned and inquired after his health. He was operated upon at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital (SKMH) and then shifted to a private room in the hospital.
“Imran Khan was to meet a number of party delegations and address some meetings on Monday, but he felt severe pain in his intestine while preparing to leave for a function at the Aiwan-e-Karkunaan,” said PTI Central Information Secretary Omar Sarfraz Cheema.
He said the PTI chairman felt acute pain in his abdomen and was rushed to SKMH, where the doctors found out it was in fact an obstruction in his abdomen, which caused the pain. Imran started his mass contact campaign on Sunday from Lahore. He is expected to resume the campaign after a gap of at least three or four days, Cheema said in reply to a question.
The PTI information secretary appealed to the nation to pray for Imran’s early recovery and thanked those on behalf of Imran Khan, who showed concern for his health. Various political and religious leaders phoned to inquire after Imran’s health.

Official sources said the Turkish nationals were arrested from the Mari Khawa check post. They were travelling from Dera Ismail Khan to Zhob and did not have any valid travel documents.
Sources added that security agencies were interrogating the four Turkish nationals.
However, they said it was premature to speculate over their affiliation with any militant group.
